NASHVILLE, Tennessee (AP) -- A black doctor has offered $50,000 to a Southern heritage group to buy the naming rights to a Vanderbilt University dormitory at the center of a legal fight over whether it should be called Confederate Memorial Hall.

I hope that the UDC doesn't accept the offer!!! It is the North and their idiots like Dr. Hamilton who are still fighting the war. This guy probably believes that the Emancipation Proclamation and the War ended slavery in Delaware and Maryland... Political correctness has such a damn grip on people that it's hard to fathom.

Ingrates...he wouldn't be a black American doctor if not for the slave trade.

How do you know that ? Have you invented time travel and gone back in time, abolished slavery and saw what happened and changed it back ? Have you traveled to parallel earth's where slavery never was and saw that this guy would not be an American doctor ?

I did say that with tounge in cheek. But the opportunities for slaves brought to America are so much more than for those sold in other 3rd world Countries.

SouthernFreebird is expressing the same point that Alex Haley once expressed. Take for example, many of the books by big game hunter/guide Peter Hataway Capstick (Death in the Long Grass is my personal favourite), that point out that life expectancies in Africa are pretty short. If my ancestors had a choice between
  1. being eaten alive by any number of wild animals, possibly crushed by elephant, hippo, rhino etc, killed by any number of poisonous snakes, or faced life as a SLAVE in Africa, sacrificed in a ceremony, killed to be eaten by cannibals, killed due to the death of a tribal king (in some tribes upwards of 500 women were killed at the death of such), OR
  2. slavery in America, where one had food, clothing, medicine and shelter provided (no so for Northern workers living on starvation wages), where one could work extra to earn monies to purchase their freedom, and their descendents could one day become king, or hold positions of authority
I would pray to God that my ancestors had the common sense to pick choice 2 - at least they'd have a chance, as would future generations.

I suppose people will get angry if they do sell the rights. He's successful and putting his money up front and people still have something to say. I happen to think the dorm name should stay the way it is BUT I'm amazed at how some people don't even consider why a black person would be offended at the term 'confederate memorial hall'.

Further, the black doctor is not advocating a new law to force a name change. He is trying to buy it fair and square. But the pro confederacy freeper nuts seem offended that he is trying to even that.

In post 22, you state slaves were provided "medicine". That is a stretch considering the "state of the art" in the 1700's. You also state that the descendents of slaves coult one day be king. Another reach, that simply shows, you are probably incapable of being objective here.

The fool is offering what the UDC contributed back in the 1930's. The court plainly stated any offer tendered would have to be adjusted to today's consumer price index.

Well... I would not get offended at a building named Confederate Memorial Hall but then I'm not from the South. Some southerners will just have to recognize that for some black people, confederate does symbolize slavery and not anything to be proud of. I think it's a shame but that's life. There's a lot to learn about confederate history but some people just aren't 'there' yet.

A slave in the 1800 cost the equivalent of $80,000 today. Only a fool would withhold medical treatment from a slave. Contrary to liberal education teachings, medicines are not a recent invention of white people. Native Americans, Africans, orientals etc have had medical practices going back centuries - albeit new concentrated drugs are usually more effective due to that aspect.

Secondly, Colin Powell, Condi Rice etc are prime examples of black advancements in this republic - both names have been floated for President.

THAT would make a real difference in some students' lives. Instead, he is willing to throw it away on a whim to change the name of a building.

how do you feel about the "lincoln-worshiping, damnyankee freeper nuts" that defend the invasion of blue-clad WAR CRIMINALS that came south to loot, burn, commit rapes & "carry-off" every thing in sight?

for SOME northern soldiers the war was about "preserving the union". unfortunately however, for a LARGE percentage of union soldiers, the war was about ONLY about FUN & PROFIT.

the reason, that ANY southern black persons think that the struggle for dixie LIBERTY had ANYTHING to do with slavery, is that from birth the damnyankee SPIN MACHINE has told them that the WBTS was a crusade against slavery.

this self-serving PROPAGANDA is furthered by the "gub'mint publick screwl sistim".

to quote the late Professor Arnold Toynbee of Oxford University,

"History is FICTION, popularly agreed on by TYRANTS & CONQUERERS."

Yes but there are plenty of southerners who are just like damn yankees doing most of the dirty work today. I do believe they are called scalawags aren't they? The revisionists wouldn't be able to trash the South if they weren't people in the South giving approval to what they're saying.

A basic tenet of conservatism is that one is free to do with their own money anything one wants too. Also, I'm sure the UDC could offer to change the name if the doctor contributed to scholarship instead of giving the money to UDC. Your spin does not cycle well.

Co. Aytch is one Confederate soldier's account of the war 20 years after the cannon's ceased. It is unique in the fact that the author was a private, a fighting man, and he tells the everyday stories: drilling, marching, foraging, picket, attacking, etc. It's written from an "everyman" point of view, not the famous politicians and generals back then. Just a fighting soldier trying to serve his duty and make it back home to marry his girl and start a life.

Sam takes you on an adventure thru every major battle and event that will have you in tears one minute and laughing the next. I have noticed so many accounts are based on Co. Aytch. The scene from G&G where the Yank and Reb picketts trade tobacco for coffee comes to mind.
