HAVANA — With shouts of "Freedom" and the singing of the Cuban national anthem, more than 200 people on Friday opened a rare opposition assembly in communist Cuba, uninterrupted by authorities despite the expulsion of European lawmakers, journalists and others who planned to attend. Martha Beatriz Roque (search), the meeting's lead organizer and a former political prisoner who attempted a similar gathering nine years ago, called it "a point of departure" for future work. "There will be a before and after for May 20 in Cuba," Roque said, claiming it was the first such gathering in Fidel Castro's (search) 46 years of communist rule. "This is a triumph for all the opposition."

"This is a really nice surprise," said the veteran activist Vladimiro Roca. "My predictions were not realized. I didn't think the government would allow it to happen."

How long before they end up in jail. OTOH, I'm glad they did it.

An Ice-axe to the back of his head would be appropriate.

Dragging him through the streets as he exclaims he is ruler of Cuba would be a good start.

Balony!

If these were actual anti Castro individuals, they would have been arrested before you could bat an eye.

This was a sham and the participants were agents for Castro.

Probably true.

But if we take what you said at face value, why would the regime show any signs of opposition, thus giving the impression that the repressive machine is crumbling???

Easy for you to say, from the comfort of your easy chair in a free nation.

Not so easy in a totalitarian communist dictatorship where speaking out will earn you 20+ years in a fetid dungeon on starvation rations, without medicine as you rot away.

God bless them... God help them.
Castros jails are as bad as they get. The UN continues to fall over itself in an attempt to kiss Castros *ss...
Damn JFK and his cowardice to Hell.
Curse his families eyes...
Cuba should have been free a long time ago. The name ' Castro ' should be something which stymies even the most astute Trivial Pursuit expert.
JFK - you have shamed all Irish Americans. Rot in Hell you bastard.
