Who let us down in the filibuster?
5/23/05 | Asphalt

Posted on 05/23/2005 7:20:54 PM PDT by Asphalt

There are numerous options as to what happened today to provoke the Senators to make the agreement instead of having the nuclear option vote. To me at least, it seems that the GOPers must have realized that they would not have enough votes from senators to get the nuclear option passed. So, assuming that this is the case, which it very well could or could not be, who let us down? McCain? Spectre? Some other RINO? or am I way off?

Here is my email to my rino senator Wimpy Graham R - SC:

I am so disappointed in you caving in to the democrats and not standing with the President you were elected to support. I have many friends who now call you a RINO - Republican In Name Only. We have a true statesman for a Governor. He looks out for the best interest of the people no matter what the cost, and the people of SC see him for the statesman he is. He also had the courage of his convictions when he represented the 1st district of SC. I had hope you would measure up to his stature, but alas you chose to be popular with the NY Times and the Washington Post.
I had strongly supported you against Alex Sanders. I could never vote for someone like him, and now I cannot cast any future votes for you. Please know that my donations, even thogh they are small, to the RNC will now cease. I will only donate to the individual candidates that stand by their convictions.
If Ronald Reagan had chosen the easy way, there would still be a Soviet Union and Berlin Wall. If George W. Bush had 'compromised' Saddam Husessin would still be killing his own countrymen, and Islamic terrorists would have struck again because they know weakness can be exploited.
There is a saying that the minority is protected for the 'tyranny of the majority.' Well you have failed in protecting the majority from the 'tyranny of the minority'. You may think you have done a good thing. Tell me when was the last time you have known liberals to be trusted? Not anytime on this planet.

Goodbye my former Senator.

This nation is in bad shape...

We have a party of collaborators with every enemy this nation has had in the last 50 years, and a party that has no guts to fight the democrats to save its life.

The republicans caved on Terry, caved on the judges, and will continue caving. Why bother voting for them? The democrats and judges run the nation...

I better learn Spanish...

Not a big deal. The trend is with us. There's no need to overplay our hand at this point, the same issues will come up in the future. We may be better able to deal with them then, after the 2006 election.

Win/win for us.

We wanted an up or down vote on judges, and the filibuster stopped. We got it.

Secondly, the democrats part of the "deal" is to not filibuster anyone but the "extreme" - which means they have to be "worse" than the ones we're going to be voting on tomorrow (Owens, Brown, etc.) , because the democrats let them pass.
If they can't "prove" another is worse, the Constitutional option - according to the Dems agreement - is still an option. If they renig on their deal, we can still nuke them with clean conscience. They're the ones that lied!

The Democrats lost big tonight.

The three most EXTREME nominees, held at bay for four years because of the "damage" they would do to the nation, have just been cleared by the Democrat moderates.

That means that if Janice Rodgers Brown is nominated to the Supreme Court, the Dems simply will not be able to filibuster her.

I have been voting for republicans to keep the democrats from power and making decisions...but the guys I vote for seem to lack the gumsion to put the dems in their place.

I hear what you are saying, but to the demonrats EXTREME means anybody Bush nominates. Now they will let these few pass now, but they'll be up to their old tricks, and who will call the on it, the MSM? Ha! The RINOs that caved? No way they will get clobbered if they admit they screwed up. A previous poster said he was one that defended Republicans when they got beat up here, and I too was one of those, and like he says, I too was wrong.

Yep. Everyone wanted to nuke the Dems once and for all (including me), but now we can play cat and mouse with them for great PR. They're over a barrel with no escape.
After the outrage from not getting the nuke dies down, I think everyone will see what has just happened, and cheer our side on for the smooth PR and check mate. The democrats have just lost their only way out. We hold all the cards.

Lindsey Graham: "Democrat by night"

Well, according to a former Daschle aide, Graham was quick to work with Daschle and the minority on a number of issues. After one such meeting, Graham emerged from Daschle's office, walked to the door, turned around, and proclaimed loudly for the Daschle's entire staff to hear:

                                                  Senator Lindsey Graham

Don't be a rube.

Any supreme court justice nominee anywhere to the Right of John McCain will be considered "extreme" and this bunch of RINOs will back the filibuster of them because they have to live up to this deal they cut with the devil. If they didn't have the guts to stand up today, what makes you think they will in the future?

I don't get it. I don't understand why they don't just put the smack down on the Dems while they have the chance. Why make the peace without a fight? I guess the bottom line for me is that I just think it's the Demicans and the Repulicrats - it's the same party, they just take turns running things. They probably don't want to really blow the cover on each other's graft. War is bad for business.

Oh really!

Let's see... they had two choices:

1. Get all the Bush's nominees voted on

2. Get just three voted on

Tell me how number 2 is bigger than number 1.

By the way do you have anything for sale? I would love to do a deal with you. Better yet I'll get one of my liberal friends do it for me!

No one. Albeit, unwittingly.

We are right where we've always been, in spite of the idiot 14.

If the Dimms filibuster in the future...we nuke them. And, we have the votes to do it...probably more tonight than last night.

The only change is two nominees without a hope of winning 51 votes have been taken off the table...and three Conservative judges are going to the bench.

That interesting point was brought out by Brit Hume on his show tonight. What delicious irony if any one of those the Democrats "let through" are nominated.

However, since they are masters of hypocrisy, they won't skip a beat and declare the nominee "too extreme".

So what's new here.......the Republicans cave yet again!!

After the up or down vote on ONLY THREE of Bush's nominees, the Demoncrats have their precious filibuster in play once again for ALL NOMINATIONS to any court, including the Supreme court. In fact, they will be able to now play the "gracious" card. They will trumpet their compromise, their graciousness to President Bush on these three nominations in the court of public opinion. It's all posturing so they aren't seen as obstructionists. In the meantime, they lie in wait for the real showdown where all the marbles are on the table - The Supreme Court. This compromise dealt today becomes ammo for the real fight.

We "real" conservatives were only 24 hours from the showdown, the pinnacle to which we have waited for months to employ part of the Bush agenda only to be thoroughly and wretchedly disappointed once again. These guys we have elected to office in the name of conservatism are nothing but a big tease. They talk big, they threaten big, but when push comes to shove they melt in the hands of the minority. It is so disheartening to see this behaviour over and over and over again. Imagine if the Dems were in power 55-45, they'd be shoving their agenda down our throats no questions asked.

Social conservatives are growing weary from being sold out. Partial Birth Abortion Ban passes and then is rectified by the liberal agenda through the courts. So we need to change the courts, the system by which we are continously hoodwinked. So here we are at the juncture and our weak-kneed Senators sell us out AGAIN!!! If any Republican is reading this and you have influence in our conservatively elected Congress please take note: Social Conservatives are beginning to feel as if we elected a "pig-in-a-poke." At some point the agenda has to be moved in our direction, at some point there needs to be a payoff however small. We are looking at what is happening in the Senate with keen interest. To control the Executive and Legislative brances and NOT get the same percentages of Judges seated as Clinton is UNFORGIVABLE. Trust me, we social conservatives won't be around forever waiting for you to grow a spine. There is a point at which we begin to collectively throw our hands in the air. And we are close to that time!!!!!!!!!!

Just sent this to the lead RINOs:

Time to resign your position.
Your lack of courage in this critical Judicial issue is a disgrace!
5 years have been wasted only to reach an agreement with the devil. The Democrats will NOT honor their agreement. They will find EVERY nominee "extreme".
My time and money will NOT be spent on increasing the number of so called Republicans in the Senate, but in replacing all who have demonstrated such extreme lack of courage and conviction.
YOU are first on the list to be replaced!

I do not think there are 50 votes to confirm nominees worth having.

There are a group of Republicans that have prospered by denouncing judicial activism and declaring that they would support the President, but who are afraid that now they have to put up or shut up.

They like the status quo-they keep their jobs, the lifetime judges keep their jobs, and the cultural leftism that their class background favors marches ahead.

Definitely a Defeat for the Dems. The Democrats considered Owens, Brown and pryor to be to extreme to be put on the federal bench. An up or down vote on those three would egg on the democrat leaderships face

I don't care about the rinos, when the goal post has been shifted to your advantage its allways a good thing
