Something started to bother me last night and I couldn't check it till now.
When DeWine came out last night he said, and it's in "the deal", that all the signatories agreed to vote for cloture it didn't hit me until later.................
Why do the Republicans have to agree to invoke cloture? Haven't they voted in the past to invoke cloture on these judges?
So I went back and check and yes...............All the repubs that signed this deal voted for cloture.....On Owen , Brown, and Pryor - twice
So does anyone else think the repubs made a silent deal w/ the dems that if the dems voted for cloture the repubs would then vote AGAINST the judges?
Just typing out loud ........Ping.................
Wait and see.
Yes
No. Reasonably paranoid and jaded with the Senate politicians. They are always making deals like this. It's just a bit shocking to see it out in the open, written down.
I suspect the collegial agreement will be breaking down, bit by bit. Nominee by nominee, senator by senator the house of cards will fall.
Gworge Allen is talking to Imus. He is not happy with this "deal." He thinks the senators should just have the spine to stand up and vote one way or the other.
No. Reasonably paranoid and jaded with the Senate politicians. They are always making deals like this. It's just a bit shocking to see [part of] it out in the open, written down.
I'm thinking this could be a shrewd move by the GOP if they actually FORCE the Dems to Filibuster Saad and Myers.
That would stick them in quite a quandry.
After allowing 3 of the "Right-Wing Extremists" on the courts.. Force them to *REALLY* filibuster the less extreme of the 5.. Haha oh man, they would be spending weeks getting that sand out of their asses.
GET UP THERE AND SQUAWK CHUCKIE SCHUMER!!
I wouldn't put anything past any of them, but I think if the Dems thought they had the votes to defeat the nomination, they wouldn't have been so terrified of a vote. Then again, maybe this bought them the time to get the votes. Three guesses how. Just another reason why character DOES count.
Senators dont have spines.
Last night Boxer decried the current judicial nominees represent extraordinary circumstances. Does that answer your question, Grasshopper?
Nothing would surprise me with this bunch!
No, you are not. You have already been betrayed once in the last 24 hours, would another facet of betrayal from the 7 surprise you?
No.
Mr. Peach thinks that's exactly what has happened. Not for the same reasons you think it, but he thinks that's what happened.
Did you see the thread last night that sounds like two other names have been dropped from the list?
And did you see Lindsey's comments about the WH WILL consult with them? Sounded like a threat to me.
For weeks I have been saying there would be a compromise. And for weeks I have been screaming that compromise would be a loss for the MAJORITY republicans. I was flamed on this board for calling these Senators spineless and that Frist and Melhman bear a large part of responsiblity for their inherent inability to rein in their counterparts. "The time for unity is now!" I exclaimed, only to be chastised by some here. Funny thing is, on all of last nights threads, ( three of them numbering in the hundreds, with two of them in thousand + reply category)not one of these chastisers were present. "Next week!" they said. "Frist is methodically counting the votes," they said. These people sold us out, period.
No, who got dropped? And who dropped them?
This is how I am seeing it also. If the Democrats actually agreed to filibuster only in the most extreme cases, they would be hard pressed to let their 3 most prominent conservative nominees fly through and then suddenly take on Saad and Myers. I believe I am still missing something, because this "agreement" seems to me to clearly favor the GOP, at least at this point in time.
Read it here; last paragraph:
http://freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1409140/posts
If I were President Bush my first SCOTUS nominee would be Miguel Estrada for Associate Justice and Scalia or Thomas for Chief Justice. While I am at lets give Robert Bork another shot too.
The targets should be dewhine in a primary and the keagle in the general. If we can get Blackwell to primary dewhine he could win and win.
Shelly Capito can beat the klansman. This would be a way to get something of value from this loss today.
I will never understand the McCainiac crowd.
Not a bad combination, not bad at all.
No I don't believe you are missing anything, though I understand completely why some people and other GOP senators would feel this is outright BS. It will all depend what happens with the others. Make the RINO's play their hand, let the DEMs do a real filibuster. The interesting part is still to come....IMO
Frist MUST test this agreement right away....with a qualified Constitutional Originalist.
Excellent idea, Email the GOP and let them know because somtimes I think they fall asleep at the switch.
If those same seven vote against the three judges, we end up with a big fat nothing! So what is the point of having GOP majority?
The Republican Party has 7 Judas's... of course, there may be more that we haven't heard from.
You are finally getting it. The rats agreement is simply the terms of a retreat. They only get what they would have gotten had they voted for cloture. They would have retained the right to filibuster another day.
Why did 7 GOP join them in giving them cover? I suppose the answers are many. Some probably want to look moderate, some may have common interests on other issues, some may not have srong conservative bases as voters.
I doubt they entered into a secret handshake because the rats would have sensed that as blood in the water and would not have caved.
The proof will be when any of these seven vote against the nominees..
Unless they have a history of striking down ANY court case that challenges ANY part of abortion on demand, including partial birth at 9 months gestation simply because your baby is not your preferred sex, they will be considered "extraordinary." Period.
Had the DEMS been in the driver's seat...they would not have hesitated to use the nuclear option....
In fact, when the Dems had the majority, they used the "Byrd option" at least 4 times to stop minority obstruction.
I honestly feel they'll "save" the filibustering for the next SCOTUS nomination. The DemocRATs more worried about that than they are the other judicial nominations at this point.

Many can claim to their voters they are for something knowing in their hearts they really aren't and be believed by the rubes that support them..when they know that their votes wont matter because the outcome is predetermined...
Two party cabal ?.....
Things done in the dark or without accountability often are...dark
If so then we have lost the Republic...
It is said that by their fruits you will know them..unless they hide what they do..then you only have their word
They have at least one word for anyone who would take a politician at his/her word...
imo
George Allen is a good guy! Sure has stood up to the Dims ...and so has Jeff Sessions. Sessions did a great job last nite refuting Boxer's baloney.
Stop it, now, you're making too much sense...aaarrrggh--scary!
If these 7 vote against Owen, Brown and Pryor...think it will be time for VERY LARGE GROUPS of true Republicans to meet at their offices to practice our freedom of speech. And, IF they vote against these nominees, Frist and the President should make it clear and obvious to these Senators that they are 'personas non grata'....
