Leftist groups emails on Senate Cave-in on Judges

I am still waiting for the Democrats to explain how it is a "defense of democracy" for a party that is in the minority of both houses to use a legal loophole to thwart the constitutional appointment of judges by the majority-elected president because they want to install unelected, unaccountable judicial activists who will legislate from the bench with no concern for the will of the majority of the people. At what point in this formulation does the concept of "democracy" ever appear?

The Republicans agreed not to nuke the filibuster, as long as the Democrats didnt use it...

It's a modern day equivalent of the MADD position the USA & USSR took during the Cold War: we won't use them if you don't use them.

Uhh, I believe our country is a REPUBLIC, not a democracy. Secondly, no where in the Constitution does it mention democracy. Not a single time. Lastly, the Pledge of Allegiance does not state "... and to the democracy for which it stands..."

You are correct on one point: that is, democracy is based on "majority rules" or more precisely, the "tyranny of the majority". Last time I checked, I did not live in a democracy. That would be news to me! Unless our Constitution is no longer in force which is a whole other topic.

In a republic, sovereignty is vested in the individual which is central in the concept of self governance, whereas in a democracy, an individual is merely entitled to privileges granted by the government. In a republic, religion is decoupled from the state as the colonists had a justified distaste for monarchies. In a republic, you are free to go about your life without government interference as long as you didn't violate the natural rights of anyone else.

Now if you were to ask me if our republic is being usurped by democratic features (notice small "d" not the large "D" of the pathetic, ineffectual invertebrates of a certain party), I would agree to that observation. But remember the founding fathers rejected democracy because the MINORITY would not be protected. This is one of the purposes of our quickly eroding checks and balances--to maintain balances of power which promotes equal representation for all.

When you are pledging your allegiance to your country as we all have since the first grade, you are taking an oath to uphold the principles that have founded and guided our country INCLUDING preserving the representation of the MINORITY. That's not socialist, that's republican! (notice the small "r" not the large "R" of the hypocritical liars, criminals and war profiteers of a certain party)

Many of my fellow countrymen and women are in the grip of a shallow infantilism whereby they mechanically spew their political litanies and platitudes without questioning their validity or resemblance to reality. This condition is imminently curable with a receptive mind, some knowledge and critical thinking. That's my two bits.

Thanks for your two bits - I indeed know we live in a republic and to be honest, I think the worst move made in this country was to put the election of senators directly into the people's hands. I was using a piece of their quote and mocking the misuse of the word.

Ahh... I guess that's the problem with text based communication: it foils my irony detector. The bulk of my post was directed at the thread in it's entirety as you probably gathered. I'm not the sharpest tack there is but the level of lazy thinking that exists, in all quarters of American society, just gets my britches in a twist.
