Maybe Alan Keyes was on to something when he suggested that election of senators be returned to the state legislatures.
I'd settle for term limits even! Two terms and you're out. At least we could avod the Byrds / Bidens / Dodds / Kennedys / Specters etc.

The 17th amendment was perhaps the worst ever created; that such a piece of legislation could pass 2/3rds of the states indicates how little most of these states take the seriousness of their jobs.
