Experts to seek ways to cope with feckless youth

TOKYO, May 26, Kyodo - Threatened by the possible loss of national strength in the future, Japanese experts on various fields kicked off a forum Thursday to come up with ways to cope with the rising number of young people called ''NEET,'' short for ''not in employment, education or training.''

Experts say the government has difficulties solving the problems involving NEET with conventional employment policies such as assistance in job hunting because such youths do not actively look for jobs voluntarily.

In the forum's first meeting, Hiroshi Okuda, chairman of the nation's largest business lobby, the Japan Business Federation, and chairman of Toyota Motor Corp., was chosen to lead the experts.

The forum's members are representatives of business, labor and civic groups as well as some academics. They plan to meet a few times a year and map out the measures to handle the problems.

The number of young people in the NEET category stood at 520,000 through 2003, up from the previous year's 480,000, according to the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare.

The issue has come under the spotlight ahead of retirements of baby-boomers starting possibly in 2007.

If no measures are taken, the nation's workforce will decline to 63 million in 2015 from 66.66 million in 2003, the ministry warns.

Japan is examining ways to increase the workforce, including accepting more foreign workers, but experts say the first thing to do is to get young people to work.

The forum is expected to organize educational activities such as putting out employment information through the Internet and holding symposiums, while promoting internships.

STOP FEEDING THEM!

If you feed people whether they work or not, guess what?

They are NOT going to work! (duh)

Hunger is the great MOTIVATOR. Give ANYONE with half a brain a choice between working or starving, and guess which one they'll pick?

The kids are spoiled and pampered by their parents, especially the mothers (who often dote excessively on their kids for lack of marital affection from their salaryman husbands). Plain and simple.

It is like the group in this country who take a five to seven year plan in a State University to get what amounts to an essentially useless liberal arts degree while wasting the taxpayer's money all the time.

Give them free health care while were at it and they will never leave the college lifestyle.

I suspect however, in Japan, that there is a healthy underground economy and these unemployed are actually dealing in something that earns them enough with the help of government and family, to get by.
