I always try to stay one behind, I just went to three recently and will wait a few months before going to 4. But this is on my desktop. On my server I run RHEL..

They are internal to my owner, er, employer, McKesson Corp; they are taught by ACC Learning Solutions. Took Linux Fundamentals last week. Scheduled Linux System Adminstration for next week if my boss will let me go. Might need to cancel, though. Have real work to do, though the Linux stuff is both useful and relevant to my current job.

Yep. "I don't use Linux because it's crap".

How do you know it's crap, when you know nothing about it.

And, let's face it...if you know anything about Linux and have never heard of apt or yum, then you know nothing about it.

Wow...that has to be the most poorly formatted post I've ever done. I'm embarrassed.

You need to get out more. Installation tools like YaST (used by the SUSE distribution) handles all these things with a click of a button. I can install Mozilla with a few button clicks and have it running in 3 minutes. Maybe 5 if I go get some coffee and get distracted.

Thanks, I asked for a Phillips screwdriver and you handed me a regular. I'm using RH9. Not SuSe.

You can get Apt for RH9, and the first thing I'd do after getting it is opening a root terminal and typing "apt-get install synaptic". You'll also want to add the addresses of the repositories you want to download from. In Debian, you'll want to put these in "/etc/apt/sources.list", but if it's not there, just do a search for "sources.list". Once your sources are in place, it should all be point and click. I'd bet YaST (I think I referred to it as yum earlier) is probably also available.

Remember, Google is your friend.

You're the one with the problem, and we're trying to help you. You respond with statements like this. With an attitude like that, why should we waste our time sitting around handing you screwdrivers at all?

Funny, I thought that it was you doing the upgrading--not your grandmother.

Reread #64. This issue originated from a discussion of how difficult it is for average users to install apps on Linux.

This issue originated from a discussion of how difficult it is for average users to install apps on Linux.

Then you picked the wrong example in Post #106 with Bugzilla and MySQL, since the average user will not be installing those particular apps.

With the introduction of that scenario, people assumed you picked a real-world experience you had recently gone through, and attempted to explain that "RPM hell" had been solved with yum, apt, YaST, and a variety of other tools. Those are easily installled on any distro regardless of whether they originally shipped with that distro.

For instance, apt ships with Debian, but I have it running on my Fedora box alongside yum, to take advantage of the different repositories. This particular setup will not be done by the average user, but the average user probably isn't as interested in the range of apps I am interested in.

The conversation had changed 40 posts later. Deal with it.

huh the stuff you were referring to was

It wasn't in my environment. I was configuring some software (bugzilla, CVS, mySQL, etc) for one of my colleagues at a local university using Red Hat 9.

Grandma is running Bugzilla, CVS, and a Database Server on a 3yo OS?

Your coming apart, you started by saying installing software is hard, I point out that with Fedora, Suse, RH and others you can just click on a link in a webpage (to install NVU, Mozilla, or others) you can also use GYUM as a gui installer of a repository online (dag is a really good one)... You just keep showing us you dont know linux but wish you did..

so what grandma app puts you in rpm hell?

BTW it may have been 40 post in terms of number but it was really 64 -> 74 (me) -> 82 (this is where you describe the RPM hell youre in) -> 87(me) -> 97...

Thats 5 post, and only 64, 82, 97 (three) were yours... Clearly you got stuck doing something you did not know how to do, you did it the hard way, and demonstrated for us all why you really are not competent to compare any 2 operating systems..

I like Fedora (http://fedora.redhat.com), but I cut my Linux teeth on RH6 so I may be a bit biased..

Wait a minute...you complain that YOU don't know how to install programs and resolve dependencies in Linux, then when you're told how to do it, you bitch that it's too hard for Granny?

I don't know if you're aware, but Linux isn't RH9. Why would you start Granny out on that anyway? You can pick something out for Granny that's easy to use. I wouldn't expect her to start out on RH9 any more than I'd expect her to build her own washing machine. There's no need when she can get what she wants ready to go out of the box.

The point was, YOU said you were working with RH9. You're not a granny-level user, right? So, don't whine about the complexity of the help you get when you complain you don't know how to do something.

Granny probably doesn't know how to repair her Windows registry after something hijacks it, either. Heck, lots of people who use computers everyday have no idea how to configure their virus/spyware programs. I know, because where I work, people know that I know a little about computers and can help them fix problems. When I talk to them about updating their virus pattern or running their spyware programs so their computers won't crash, I get a glazed look, and a request to come and do it for them from time to time. Point is, anyone who doesn't know much about computers is eventually going to have trouble, regardless of the OS.

If you want a distro that has Apt from the get-go, get Mepis. Then, YOU can help her apt-get Synaptic (from a root terminal, type apt-get install synaptic...can ya do that?), just like you'd help her set up antivirus, firewall and spyware programs in Windows (oh, do I remember those days!).

After that, all she has to do is type a password and click on the programs she wants. Hardly rocket science.

Anyway, you must have been too busy to thank those who truly do want to help you, in spite of your sarcasm.

You're welcome, and feel free to ask any more questions. I'm not an expert, but I'll tell you what I know.
