Interesting article about Riley Tidwell's homecoming. He was the one who brought my Uncle's body down the mountain and the article is about what happened to him afterwards. He was not aware of the article but eventually toured with Burgess Meredith and Robert Mitchum.

And about the little bag of sand. That was when the Germans were pushing us back on the beaches at Salerno. One of the boys had a little old Bull Durham full of sand that he'd brought from home with him. The Germans had us just about pushed into the water there on Salerno, and he just poured that little old bag of sand out on the beach, and said, "Now, we ain't going on no farther back than this. This is Texas."

Oooorah!

I was born after my Uncle died but I did get to spend some time with Riley Tidwell. He was quite a character.

Thanks to everyone for their kind replies. FYI, the 36th Division was recently reactivated and is now in Iraq. May God be with the T-Patchers as they serve our nation.
