As he stood on the mound of ruble in NYC, President Bush should have called on Congress to give him a bill to sign the next day that had in it the provisions for some form of National Service (including authority to draft) from every American.

Here, let me help translate this:

Why this is happening is no mystery. The NYT knows far more about war, foreign policy, troops on the ground, strategy, tactics and all things military than those who have dedicated their lives to learning and practicing the art of war on behalf of our country.

Two years of hearing about too few troops on the ground, inadequate armor, extended tours of duty and accelerated rotations back into combat have taken their toll, discouraging potential enlistees and their parents. We here at the NYT have done everything in our power to influence, propagandize, negatively report, encourage the enemies of the United States and denigrate those who have dedicated their lives to the defense of the United States and we are finally begining to have an impact.

The citizen-soldiers of the Guard and Reserves have suddenly become full-time warriors. In spite of the best efforts of the NYT and the MSM the Citizen-Soldiers of the Guard and Reserves have fulfilled their obligations and helped bring freedom to oppressed people around the globe and especially in the Middle East.

There, thats better.

Semper Fi,

TS

What Rumsfeld needs to do is convince the congress that the US needs a bigger military... which means a bigger military budget.

What he shouldn't be doing is downsizing the military during the Iraqi conflict.

Which is what he's doing right now to the USAF.

"Recruiters are having even more trouble persuading people to sign up for Army National Guard and Reserve units."

There these NYT people go again!

The National Guard should NEVER be lumped with the Army Reserve. It was instituted as a home guard, a bulwark, as it were, against invasion of the homeland.

The major recruiting carrot for the National Guard has always been that they would NOT be called upon to fill up the ranks of the standing ARMY. That is the function of the Army Reserve.

In return, the enlistment in the Guard is 8 years instead of 3 and there are no benefits. No GI bill, no veterans' benefits. In fact, ex-Guard members cannot even call themselves veterans.

This is all academic, however, because since when did rules and promises ever mean anything to the liberals who infest our government? The Guard is the very first place they go to to find bodies whenever there is a dustup somewhere.

Who wants to join the Guard just to be lied to by the government?

No problem. I'd better go off to bed. My posts are starting to sound just a wee bit grumpy. I must be getting tired.

;-)

You can "blame" anyone you want but it matters not. There is no need for a mass army of draftees. If you don't have a grasp of strategic needs don't bother us with amatuer Monday Morning Quarterbacking.

Well, you got most everything wrong in your commentary, and need a National Guard 101 refresher.

You came close to a fact in one area - by law, the Veterans Administration (now Dept of Veterans) does give second class treatment to the Guard, even though many of them are performing the same service or more than active counterparts. Some of this discrimination is due to turf issues that punish the soldier to preserve the authority of the Adjutant Generals.

The sad details are a product of differences in the applicable public laws, Title 10 and Title 32.

We've heard your insistence upon the draft long enough. It would DESTROY our military. You've never served. Why you demand something from others that you failed to do yourself speaks volumes.

Having spent years raising other people's children and turning them into men - after they volunteered to be there - is far easier than taking someone who wants to escape back to mommy. That's why back when I first joined physical abuse was commonplace - that's how you have to deal with conscripts. "Wall to wall" was the form of counseling each month for some troops.

Secondly, increased socialism and authoritarianism is the last thing we need to defend the Republic. We need individualistic thinkers who are patriotic, as well as willing to question authority.

I have no doubt that the NY Slime is once again doing a liberal hit-piece and is once again wrong, as usual.

Maybe. Tough to deny that recruiting is down.

Equally tough to deny that's a problem.

The question is why, and how do you fix it?

Over the long term, the military can't sustain end strength without succesful recruiting. Time will tell if increased incentives help, but pretending it's not a problem won't make it go away.

Who's "We've?" How do you know I've never served?

Why you demand something from others that you failed to do yourself speaks volumes.

You just like flapping your gums?

The MSM has made military service unappetizing to their viewers long enough that it has had an impact. The MTv generation would rather sit around navel gazing than defend our nation's interests. Their parents are no better - they chose not to serve while reaping the benefits of being an American citizen.

Hard to expect parasites to breed anything other than more parasites.

Ever get a creepy feeling when someone is staring at you? And then you look over at them, and they look really weird.

Staring.
