For a real eye-opener, try to find 'Mig Pilot: The Final Escape of Lt. Belenko' by John Barron. It's the story of a Russian top gun type who defects with his MiG fighter to Japan, then given asylum here.
Even though he planned his escape he could scarcely believe our bountiful existence. He thought things like supermarkets and shopping malls were staged for him.
