Two months after the Watergate break-in, President Nixon already knew that FBI official W. Mark Felt was leaking information to reporters – because Nixon had his own spy at the FBI, an Oval Office tape reveals.
The tape also discloses that Nixon was shocked to learn Felt was Jewish and became horrified that a Jew could become head of the FBI.(Vanity Fair described Felt, whose ancestors were Irish, as claiming "no religious affiliation.")
In the conversation between Nixon and Chief of Staff H.R. Haldeman, taped on Oct. 19, 1972, Haldeman mentions Felt by name and refers to Nixon’s spy as "our source.”
And when Haldeman discusses Felt’s ambition to head the FBI, Nixon says: "Christ, put a Jew in there?”
It’s not the only time Nixon was taped making an anti-Semitic remark.
On the tape of a February 1972 conversation with evangelist Billy Graham – made public in February 2002 – Nixon complained that a number of major news publications were "dominated” by Jews, and Graham responded: "The stranglehold has got to be broken, or the country’s going to go down the drain.”
Nixon said: "You believe that?”
Graham: "Yes sir.”
Nixon: "So do I. I can’t ever say that, but I believe it.”
Graham: "No, but if you get elected a second time, then we might be able to do something.”
Later on the tape, after Graham left, Nixon told Haldeman: "The Jews are irreligious, atheistic, immoral bunch of bastards.”
The tape citing Felt as a leak mentions FBI Director L. Patrick Gray, whom Nixon had appointed after J. Edgar Hoover died – passing over Felt, who was expected to get the top job.
Here are excerpts from the tape:
Nixon: "Well, if they’ve got a leak down at the FBI, why the hell can’t Gray tell us what the hell is left . . . ?”
Haldeman: "We know what’s left, and we know who leaked it.”
Nixon: "Somebody in the FBI?”
Haldeman: "Yes, sir. Mark Felt. You can’t say anything about this because it will screw up our source and there’s a real concern. [Attorney General John] Mitchell is the only one who knows about this and he feels strongly that we better not do anything because . . .”
Nixon: "Do anything? Never.”
Haldeman: "If we move on him, he’ll go out and unload everything. He knows everything that’s to be known in the FBI. He has access to absolutely everything . . .”
Nixon: "You know what I’d do with him, the bastard? Well that’s all I want to hear about it.”
Haldeman: "I think he wants to be in the top spot.”
Nixon: "That’s a hell of a way for him to get to the top ... Is he Catholic?”
Haldeman: "Jewish.”
Nixon: "Christ, put a Jew in there?”
Haldeman: "Well, that could explain it, too.”
Mark Felt was a Washington career bureaucrat. Cabinet level and top department jobs never go to career bureaucrats. One of the last top career jobs to go political was the Director, Bureau of Land Management, Dept of Interior in the 70s with the passage of FLPMA. Felt was a disgruntled career employee who at 18 years with the govt looked forward to taking the top job at the FBI but was sorely disappointed. His revenge was to take down the Nixon Administration by hook or crook.

Nixon was no hero, but neither was Felt.
Harry Truman had a Jewish business partner and a Jewish film biographer. Neither was allowed in his home, which was his personal realm. They're products of the first half of the last century who can't be judged based on incidents as related to todays standards, rather the totality of their actions.
What's this, the second or third thread today with this stupid obcession?

Anti-semitism posture by Jews is an offensive mode not defensive. It has become a weapon of intimidation.
Sort of reminds you of the modern Democrats, who are horrified that a Christian might head any governmental agency.

Does Nixon's help for Israel prove he wasn't an anti Semite?I think Nixon saw Israel as a tactical ally in that part of the World. Soviets were arming the other side. Israel was in big trouble in the 73 conflict. Its loss would have been a disaster for US foreign policy and Nixon'e Presidency. I doubt Nixon loved Israel for the meaningful notion of Zionism.
True Nixon had Jews in his cabinet. Not only Kissinger, but Bill Safire and law partner Leonard Garment who was one of his closest confidents. However, one his more interesting friends was the late Rabbi Baruch Korf. Nixon was known to spill his guts to a man who was a constant presence. When Nixon resigned and went back to San Clemente he called on Korf for solace.
Nixon is a very complex figure. BTW, he was certainly NO Conservative. He talked a good game. He became known as a Red baitor which infuriated the Left. But, his Presidency was a disaster for our causes. Nixon was probably a very flawed individual. However, I'm beginning to believe most Presidents have to have a screw loose to endure what it takes to get to the Oval Office. Was he a bigot? Mircky stuff. He certainly had his moments.
There are a disproportionate number of Russian, Chinese and Cuban Communists as well. Communists aren't Jewish, Russian, Chinese, Latin, African or anything else. They are RED. They know no nationality or creed other than Communist World Revolution. A Communist betrays himself, his family, his race, his religion, his nation, and all humanity. Talk of Jewish Communists because they are Jewish is simplistic in the extreme.

You and I are in complete agreement on that point. You might want to check the links in post #2. To my mind, Felt was a hero of the Cold War. I'm not sure why he turned on Nixon, but I'm sure it will come out in due time. BTW, I think the Left is making a big mistake by circling the wagons around Felt. He is about as anti-Communist as they come (unlike Nixon, who was anti-Communist only when it was popular).
