AMNESTY [INT'L]: BEIJING MUST FACE UP TO TIANANMEN MASSACRE

Beijing (AsiaNews/Agencies) - Amnesty International Friday called on the Chinese government to “release all people imprisoned during the 1989 Tiananmen democracy protests” and “arrest those responsible for the June 4 massacre”.

"Tiananmen clearly remains very much alive today for the Chinese public and the demands by Chinese citizens for justice continue," the international rights group said in a statement.

"We reiterate –said also - our call on the Chinese government to conduct an independent inquiry into the killing of unarmed students and demonstrators. Those found responsible should be tried and brought to justice. We also call on the government to release all those who are still imprisoned in connection with the Tiananmen crackdown and who never received fair trials."

China's communist-led government has taken the position that foreign concerns regarding the crackdown are "outdated", while maintaining that without it China would not have been able to enjoy 16 years of robust economic growth. Officials repeated that position on Thursday.

During 6 weeks troops of the national army backed by tanks, massacred defenceless protesters. The demonstrators had been calling for democracy and an end to corruption for Chinese society in the streets of the Chinese capital. The death toll of the massacre was never released by the government, but independent international organisations say thousands of people were killed around the square, in side streets and in the days following 4 June.

"The on-going passion that surrounds the issue in China is clear from the continuous string of detentions of citizens who seek to post information on the internet regarding the dead or missing from 1989," Amnesty said.

Without the foreign purchase of Treasury notes, we could not sustain the billions the federal government is spending.....who cares, right? So what if we're the greatest debtor nation in the world.....a debtor nation absent the textile and manufacturing sectors that provided jobs to Americans in the '50's and '60's?

I recently read where we're outsourcing sub-contracts to other countries for the manufacture of military equipment and clothing, because we no longer have the ability to produce the materials?

Why must the American taxpayer take it in the shorts, because Chinese slave lavbor greatly increases profit for the globalists, while putting the American worker in the street?

Is it in our best interest to trade with a dictatorship that capriciously murders the citizens of China, and increases its potential for world dominance on the backs of Americans who are now forced to buy Chinese products, because that's all there is on the racks and store shelves?

Shut down our trade with China; until that government releases every political prisoner who took part in the pro-democracy rally in Tiananmen Square, June 4, 1989!!!

This was Amnesty International Friday on China. Amnesty International Wednesday called Guantanamo Bay "the gulag of our time". I'm having a real problem with Amnesty International Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday because they can't maintain a 24 hour position. I think they have to include AM and PM in their various names.

Tell that to the citizens of Taiwan, and the Christians in China who are regularly subjected to beatings, arrest, torture and death. Finally, tell the citizens of Tibet how China is "....moving away from communism...."

Did you know the atheist communists are permitting a kind of catholic church to be active. The catch? The priests must swear allegiance to the government, and refuse to recognize the pope.....and the government picks the bishops.

China is dependent upon the American consumer. Wrong.

The American consumer is dependent upon communism to supply its materials - from building materials to the shoes, stockings and underclothing Americans wear.

America refuses to recognize its pre-WWII failures. Our shipment of raw materials to Japan made it possible for them to make their attempt to dominate the Pacific.

Today there is a great likelyhood we are making it possible for China to succeed America as the dominating world force. There is no way in hell China is dumping its communist dictatorship in favor of a democracy.

Your examples notwithstanding, China is in fact moving away from communism.

The fact that they've moved from ideological communism to plain ol' authoritarianism (with the accompanying outrages like the ones you listed) makes it easy to think that nothing has changed.

It may take a generation or two to see results in the direction of genuine freedom (when the revolutionary generation is long gone), but the momentum is definitely in that direction. A lot depends on the younger generation keeping the momentum going.

Exactly. In the days of Mao it was not enough to stay quiet. You had to publicly praise Mao and 'peasant communism' even while you were starving or your parents were being attacked. Now they may have no rights(they have a constitution, but 1 branch of government) , and can go to jail for complaining too much; but they are not brainwashed to the extent as was done in the 50s and 60s.

They still have some remains of Communism, lots of worthless government jobs that have to be paid for by the private economy.
