Military Details Koran Incidents at Base in Cuba [more detail showing most was ACCIDENTAL]
New York Times ^ | 6/4/05 | Eric Schmitt

Posted on 06/03/2005 7:51:21 PM PDT by saquin

WASHINGTON, June 3 - A military inquiry has found that guards or interrogators at the Guantánamo Bay detention center in Cuba kicked, stepped on and splashed urine on the Koran, in some cases intentionally but in others by accident, the Pentagon said on Friday.

The splashing of urine was among the cases described as inadvertent. It was said to have occurred when a guard urinated near an air vent and the wind blew his urine through the vent into a detainee's cell. The detainee was given a fresh uniform and a new Koran, and the guard was reprimanded and assigned to guard duty that kept him from contact with detainees for the remainder of his time at Guantánamo, according to the military inquiry.

The investigation into allegations that the Koran had been mishandled also found that in one instance detainees' Korans were wet because guards on the night shift had thrown water balloons on the cellblock. [My note: presumably at each other, joking around, rather than directly at detainees or their Korans]

In another case, a two-word obscenity was written in English on the inside cover of an English-version Koran, but investigators could not determine whether a guard or detainee had written it.

[...]

...a detainee who spoke conversational English complained that someone had written a two-word obscenity in English in his English-version Koran. The complaint was recorded in an electronic log. "It is possible," the military's statement said, "that a guard committed this act; it is equally possible that the detainee wrote in his own Koran."

Yes, but just to make sure...

We need to take away ALL of the copies given to prisoners....just so we don't mess up again ;-)

enough of this bs. Why haven't we been talking about the detainees flushing the korans themselves. I talked with one former Gitmo guard and He told me the inmates would flush the koran down the toilet to stop it up.

War time prisoners in almost ANY other country would get their religious books alright: they would get them shoved right up someplace the sun does not shine.

These liberals in this country are making me sick.

This is not hand wringing.

Hand wringing implies there is a conflict within the person, hence the wringing.

This is the equivalent of miners panning for gold, and being excited at every glimmer. The miners are the MSM and the Left.

" The report also found 15 incidents in which detainees had mishandled the Koran."

Well I guess we need to "git jihad" on these guys also.

What ever happened to holding ourselves, the United States, to a higher standard than the rest of the world? I want to be proud of my country for treating other people, cultures and religions with dignity and respect. I see people on this site trying to justify desecration of the Quran by saying that "other countries would do the same thing." Since when was that an excuse for Americans? I can't believe that people are even suggesting that and that people are trying to minimize desecration of a holy book. This nation was founded with respect for a variety of religions as a fundamental guiding principle. We are better than what some of you are painting us out to be.

And by the way, the last time that I posted something that was "against the party line," my posting privileges were revoked quickly--its almost like people on this site do not want to hear any views contrary to their own. Keep tabs on me and see how quickly I got booted off or my messages deleted--and then ask yourself WHY my opinions must be suppressed.

I don't really understand your point. I never suggested that kicking a book is a _crime_. But I did say that desecrating (kicking, pissing on, tearing up or throwing on the floor) a certain very important book--the Quran--is demeaning to religion, God and other people who follow that religion. It is also (as is now obvious) a potential public relations nightmare.

Think about how angry you probably got when you heard about "Piss Christ." Well the Quran is of at least as great religious significance to Muslims. The U.S. is better than this. The military demeans itself when it acts unprofessionally.

My lord man, get ahold of yourself!

Men and women in the military are human beings.

Have you read the high standards are military has set for handling the Koran?

For prisoners, for battle, for discipline in the US military?

With millions in uniform all over the world, do you not think there will be misdeeds anywhere, minor and major??

There are horrible stories in every org, bus, family, church, it is illogical to believe in perfection of human behavior.

Even under your guy Clinton their were rapes committed by our soldiers in Japan I believe it was, the press reported it, as they would any criminal story, not on a reflection of Clinton or the US.

I agree.

This is such PC crap. Why are we so worried about the Muslim unholy book? While Christianity gets stepped on and desecrated daily, we have idiots all over the country worried about offending Islam. All I have to say is....WHO CARES!
