Hit Me Baby One More Time Is A Ratings Success

Thursday night's debut of "Hit Me Baby One More Time" hit the highest adult 18-49 rating for a new summer unscripted series premiere in two years, winning its slot among all adult viewers under the age of 50, according to updated in-home viewing figures from Nielsen Media Research.

From 9-9:59 p.m. ET, the premiere of "Hit Me Baby One More Time" (4.7 rating, 13 share in 18-49, 8.9 million viewers overall) scored the highest debut rating for a new unscripted summer series since June 3, 2003 (Fox's "American Juniors") and matched NBC's best 18-49 rating for a summer reality series debut in nearly three years ("Meet My Folks" on July 22, 2002). "Hit Me" improved the time period by 62 percent in adults 18-49 versus NBC's performance on the same night last year (4.7 vs. a 2.9 with comedy encores).

"Hit Me Baby One More Time" was #1 in adults, men and women 18-49 and adults, men and women 18-34, beating all competition including CBS' "CSI" rebroadcast and ABC's "Charlie's Angels" encore. "Hit Me" built on its 18-49 lead-in by 57 percent (4.7 vs. 3.0).

"Hit Me Baby" is the #1 primetime telecast of the week to date in adults 18-49 and is also tied for the highest 18-49 rating of any primetime telecast since the end of the May sweep (tying the May 26 encore telecast of CBS' "CSI").

Loverboy was a crackup and Flock of Seagulls flopped. Arrested Development stole the show.

Not to nitpick, but Loverboy and Wang Chung were not one-hit wonders. Not defending them, mind you, just that they each had more than one hit. I also think the Knack had more than one hit, or maybe they just had one hit and one unforgettable classic expression of teen hormonal angst ("Good Girls Don't").

I know the title 'one hit wonder' is not exactly true. I've heard VH1 call Men at Work a one-hit wonder, but they had four songs on on billboard top 20 and also Midnight Oil.

Cory Hart's, "I Wear My Sunglasses At Night" comes to mind.

Or how about Samantha Fox and "Touch Me." I suspect that her audience couldn't sing you the chorus to that song to save their lives.

These stories remind me of why we disconnected the t.v. As Groucho Marx once said, "Television is very educational... every time someone turns it on, I go into the other room and read a book."

yes--how could Men At Work be considered One-Hit wonder? even their second album had a couple of good songs--including my favorite, "Overkill." they sounded terrible in concert... very disappointing...

I can't tell you how grateful I am that Mr. Ant has gracefully bowed out of the "scene". It is quite annoying to see old artists trying their darndest to look young and hip. It is no different than putting lipstick on a pig.

Although I'm aware of a run-in or two that Mr. Ant has had with the law, he looks like a dignified man in that photo. Much more deserving of our attention then when he slapped that silly war paint on his face, wearing that military uniform while prancing about as if he had ants in his pants(pun intended) all those years ago. :^)

I do recall "Never Surrender", but I don't believe it was a hit. I may be wrong.

Gary Newman's "Cars," and Aldo Nova's "Fantasy," and Toni Basil's "Mickey," (i think they're all one-hit wonders) remind me of high school football games...
