I'm pretty sure that Collins has also stated that if this "compromise" doesn't work out, she will vote with Frist. That will probably bring Snowe along, too.
It seemed like her take was this is the Demodog's "last chance" to play nice. Sorry I don't have references to her statements.
If I am not mistaken, aren't they voting right now on Janice Rogers Brown? They have taken the judge nominations back up almost immediately after returning from recess.
C'mon - do you really think Bolton is going to be filibustered? NO WAY!
They are doing their little "debating society" antics right now, as is the Senators' rights. When it comes right down to it, when Frist ends up nuking the Bolton nomination, even HiTLERY and McLame will vote WITH FRIST, if he needs their vote for 50, to disallow filibustering a president's EXECUTIVE nominations. No way that Hitlery is going to want to have to deal with her presidency being hamstrung by the forty most conservative Senators determining who will be on her cabinet. Same with McStain.
Get real here. Bolton's nomination is being held up in the normal Senatorial sense right now, but they have no possible way to filibuster him, and a nuke showdown they will NOT have on Bolton.
I'm honestly surprised they went this far with Bolton and damaged the "good will" supposedly generated by their deal. I thought they'd make some noise about him but hold their fire for a SC pick. Dumb move on their part, IMHO.
Frist has engineered a masterpiece this whole Senate session.
He anticipated this type of mess, and had a plan to deal with it, including the McStain mess.
You can be proud of him.
The public doesn't give a rat's patootie about this, indeed they'd probably be more supportive if the GOP (including the White House) really got aggressively on-message.
Now NBC-CBS-ABC-WaPo-CNN do get their panties in a twist about "bullying". If this is a problem to the GOP leadership, then we need new GOP leadership.
You may have missed the analyses, but essentially the "Extraordinary Circumstances" clause can NOT APPLY simply because a Senator thinks a judge is overly "constructionist" or "conservative" - because they have now allowed Brown, Owen, and Pryor through by default. Several of the 14 have said that negates that issue and that they will not stand for a filibuster on that basis.
Yepper. We're all on http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/news/1418053/posts?q=1&&page=151
waiting for it.
Before the recess vote, Frist DID schedule votes for Pryor and Brown. That was what Reid was blubbering incoherently about toward the end of that session - he knew he was hosed.
Sure. You have to keep fighting and paying attention. But, don't direct your invective at Frist until it is clear that he deserves it.
I did not particularly like the deal either, because I felt like they were on the verge of winning without having to give anything to the Dems. However, there is a silver lining.
I hope Frist has made it clear to some of these "moderates" that once the Democrats start filibustering again that if he doesn't get their support for cloture then he will bar them from committee chairs and places of privilege and feed them to the conservative watchdogs for supper. That part is not clear, but that is what, IMHO, Frist needs to make clear behind the scenes.
Hey, that isn't right, you cut out Reid's blubbering over and after Frist set that schedule! That was the best part!
My apologies... I was just going for the info, not the entertainment value. I'll try to keep both in mind next time. ;)
I remain floored that the rats were so thoroughly out-manuevered. The rats gained absolutely NOTHING while the GOP not only retains the power to "go Constitutional" anytime they want, but they now have exactly the public relations cover they needed to blame the rats for forcing the issue! ("The Democrats promised not to filibuster but they have broken their promise, and so, regretfully, we find that we are forced to.... etc."). What a staggering, one-sided victory for the GOP.
You'd have to be an idiot not to understand what happened.
Regards,
LH
Good summary. You nailed it.
Your #113 nails it......but I must confess that it took me a while to see it.
I think all of these are actually DemoTrolls trying (in vain) do damp my delight at the way Frist has dismantled the minority party(ies? - maybe they're Libertarians?)... Since that's what I think of them, My GLEE at watching their consternation is simply one more thing to toast as I lift my glass of Cold Duck with popcorn as I watch the show.
I'm jealous that I didn't figure that out on my own. I think you're right.
And I hope so too.
Ha! I was boiling livid with hatred for this "gang of 14" for two days before I calmed down enough to get more information and do the math. I think it dawned on a lot of people at about the same time around here that WE WON, BIG TIME.
Of course, the bottom line will be the confirmations actually happening. Slowly but surely, they ARE. (I have C-Span on and I am now listening to the cloture vote for Janice R. Brown!)
I surely hope so!!!!!
My comment after the 'deal' was announced ...
"First, what about the other judicial nominees? This is 'justice delayed' for 3 nominees, but 'justice denied' still for several more: Nominees William Myers, a pick for the California-based 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, and Henry Saad, for the upper Midwest's 6th Circuit, would remain blocked."
Here's the proof that this is a Republican victory: Myers and Saad getting a vote - *soon*. As in, this year.
