PAPER: BUSH OFFICIAL EDITED 'GLOBAL WARMING' EVIDENCE Tue Jun 07 2005 19:07:22 ET

A White House official who once led the oil industry's fight against curbs on greenhouse gases has repeatedly edited government climate reports in ways that play down links between such emissions and global warming, according to internal documents.

The NEW YORK TIMES is planning a Wednesday splash on the development, newsroom sources tell the DRUDGE REPORT.

NYT reporter Andrew Revkin is urgently filing the report.

"In handwritten notes on drafts of several reports issued in 2003, the official, Philip Cooney, removed or adjusted descriptions of climate research that government scientists and their supervisors, including some senior Bush administration officials, had already approved."

"Beginning in 1937, the Soviet Union established a series of drifting ice stations near the North Pole, in part to gather oceanographic and weather data, but also to maintain control of a region where the ice is in constant flux, often drifting hundreds of yards an hour in unpredictable directions. The effort ended in 1991, when the 31st station was abandoned as the Soviet Union collapsed. Arctic scientists around the world lamented the loss of what many said was the longest nearly continuous effort to gather data in the central Arctic Ocean."-Andrew Revkin

This is a religion. It does not matter what they read. The GOP need to get out and debunk this every day. Instead, we had Bush agreeing with them today!

Why does Bush do things like this now? The last election proved that not enough people care about it to matter, and getting support out of the EUros is worst than pointless.

I am really getting sick of the GOP feeling that they need to duck or accommodate every Socialist Issue that comes its way.

It is highly dangerous as it will alienate the right to the point that the Dems will get back into power.

The Earth is getting warmer.

For at least the past 450 000 years, the Earth has been warming, or cooling. The unstated hypothesis of the GW nuts is that this process is abnormal, and that what is normal is for surface temperatures to remain stable over long periods of time.

This, of course, is false, and is easily demonstrated to be false.

Where's the beef?

That is not the point: It is not waht he feels, it is the support of the office that matters.

Now the fence sittiers are moved that much further off the fence, and the Socilist propganda machine is that much more emboldened. This is the ultimate BIG LIE. If they can get away with this one, then anything is possible.

As usual, the GOP does not seem to understand what is up with this one.

Often happens after an ice age 1100-1800 because after cooling comes um lets see um.......WARMING. Climate is not static and any theory tat supposesw as it's premise that it is, is well not reaqlly a theory at all.

The beef is in my freezer 1/2 a Black Angus just purchased last week.

Human and mammal existence, by their very scientific attributes, cause global warming. We all release CO2. Hence the wackos have their own religion. The fact that we exhale CO2 would have to inevitably prove that our Creator was faulty, hence thats why they are tree-worshipping. They don't believe in Him, and so they think that any human existance will cause irreversable global warming and we are all doomed as it is.

Genesis 9: And God said, This is the token of the covenant which I make between me and you and every living creature that is with you, for perpetual generations:

I do set my bow in the cloud, and it shall be for a token of a covenant between me and the earth.

And it shall come to pass, when I bring a cloud over the earth, that the bow shall be seen in the cloud:

And I will remember my covenant, which is between me and you and every living creature of all flesh; and the waters shall no more become a flood to destroy all flesh.

And the bow shall be in the cloud; and I will look upon it, that I may remember the everlasting covenant between God and every living creature of all flesh that is upon the earth.

Two thousand scientists signed a petition to have Clinton not sign the Japanese accords. The earth is getting warmer because the sun has heated up 35%. Mt Pinatubo in the Philippines released more greenhouse gas than the whole industrial revolution. It is impossible for us to make any impact on weather. The earth is a living system that has taken care of things for 4 billion (?) years. What are these democrats spying in the white house anyway. Is this Watergate all over again?

These folks are playing a very dangerous game with statistics. This whole "above-average" thing is flat-out nuts. A true average must reflect all data, and as a result the average shifts constantly. You can't just stop the clock in, say, 1950 and play above/below average temperature games.

Michael Crichton makes many superb points in "State of Fear" regarding the shoddy methodology of these Global Warming folks. The real kicker remains that even if it were true, we really have no idea how much the temperatures vary on the surface of the planet, let alone whether or not our use of the planet has a tangible effect. The book is fiction, but the appendices and the footnotes all point to real, legitimate data that can be verified. Just an FYI.

The earth is getting warmer because the sun has heated up 35%.

It was 2 degress warmer in the 1940's, and 5 degrees warmer in the 11th century. The year 2002 was the coldest winter in the US in 150 years, and new record lows were set again in some cities this past winter. Since the stats cleary show the earth is getting colder, how do we stop the imaginary warming?

Raise taxes on the US of course. Socialist bilge knows no boundaries.

Yes, it is very bizarre, and so unnecessary. No one in the USA wants this "Save Africa" business except the loony left. We have not even had Al Sharpton out on this.

Over 400 Million! What could NASA do with that? how many more Stealth fighters could we build? What could the High Energy Physics community do with it? That is not chump change.

If 911 proved anything, it is that we get absolutely nothing out of this that is positive, and a great deal that is negative.

When I hear a GOP POTUS who was billed as a conservative and a Christian get up and tell a gaggle of the Leftist press that Bono "has depth" my first response is "Huh?"

Mark my words this is all going to hurt the GOP and the conservative cause.

04 was a success despite the so called "moderates" and the Press.

I do not believe that their is a real audience for this "Save Africa" stuff even in the UK or the EU, and Tony Blair should just be ashamed of himself. He should focus on the problems of his (not very big) country.

What is the point of all of this stuff. The EUros just use this as an excuse - they will just find another. It allows the whole pinko NGO system to think that they have more power then they have.

If the GOP really wanted to consolidate power they would just start going after all of these "causes" and debunk them as the complete frauds they are.

I do think GWB means well, but he is getting terrible advice from someone.

I don't want to dismiss the fact that evidence was removed without seeing exactly what happened--the story may very well be true in one sense. But the fact that this is a "developing story" with mere accusation and no hard evidence, it's hard to accept it. Once again, we are going to find the MSM ginning up half truths in such a way as to elevate them to "truth" for the purpose of political gain.

It's just another non-story story.

The real problem with everything on this planet is man's fallen, sinful nature. Before the flood, a canopy of water encircled the Earth, giving us a green house effect. It also protected us from solar winds, and the harmful rays of the sun. This is why we have famine and floods, hurricanes and tornadoes. The sun is THE weather maker.

That is why John saw a "new Heaven and Earth, with no more sea. The water will be put back where it belongs, in orbit around the Earth. All permanent solutions to all of man's problems can only be found in Christ and His eternal Kingdom. All man has in his cursed state is a band aid approach, which only covers up the problem, but never cures it.

Back in the 70's the catch phrase was global cooling. Do a google of global cooling, and read some articles that pretty much say the same things as today, except then we were going into a new ice age.

Oh I forgot, WE ARE going into a new ice age, I saw The Day After Tomorrow.

Yes it is scary. I felt the same way about his father,BTW.

I really thought they we had moved the party farther right. The GOP convention in 04 was much more conservative in rhetoric than were those during the Reagan years. Yet Reagan really accomplished much more.

Why are they so afraid of the Liberal establishment?

Do they not see that if the kicked it really hard it would just fall over?

It looks like we will never get that chance. Where is the fire we saw in GWB at the end of that campaign. He did have a mandate, he did have "political capital." That capital was from the Right, not some sort of moderate coalitions. There is no such thing.

I do not know how to turn this around.

The Left now knows that if they ever get into power that they must make their final move right away or else they wilkl never get to put it over on us. And Lord help us when they do. They are ruthless. Why can't the GOP be that way? WHy can't they see what is at stake? Why can't they see that the Republic has never been in greater peril?

Oh, good grief! Because President Bush utters some platitudes about Bono, you are running scared? Buck up!

There is more to leadership and politics than simply uttering your innermost thoughts in public. Let's imagine that President Bush said "Bono is a sham and a scam artist, and I won't pay attention to anything he says." How much good would that do, other than making you feel good? Zero, zip, nada.

Sometimes you have to say nice things about ninnies in order to advance your agenda. People who understand this are successful; people who don't whine and get nothing advanced. You are in the latter category.

CO2 level today - 380 parts per million - or 0.038%

CO2 level pre-industrial - 270 parts per million - or 0.027%

CO2 level 50 million years ago - 80,000 parts per million or 8.0 per cent

CO2 level 3 billion years ago - 500,000 parts per million - or 50.0%

Temperature 3 billion years ago - a few degrees (several) warmer than today

Temperature 50 million years ago - a few degrees warmer than today

Temperature pre-industrial - up and down depending on the cycles - 50 degrees colder in ice age periods (26 of those in the last 3.5 million years) - about the same as today in interglacial periods.

Temperature today - about the same as the last interglacial (actually a little lower than the last interglacial)

CO2 is not the make-or-break global warming gas that the theory and the models suggest.

But CO2 will rise to 550 parts per million - or 0.055% by 2050 and we haven't seen that level of CO2 over the last 5 million years (but that might just be the amount needed to stave off the next glacial period)

On the other hand we don't want to double the amount of CO2 that has been in the atmosphere for the last 5 million years unless we truly know what the consequences will be. We have some who say that the models suggest huge increases in temperature.

But the simple fact is that we don't know.

I don't like not knowing.

And that means we should do whatever we can to reduce emissions, or we should do whatever can be justified in economic and financial terms to reduce emissions. (but that is what everyone is doing already.)

I respectfully disagree. In that case, there is absolutely NOTHING you or I or Kyoto or the UN or John Kerry can do to stop it. The fact is no matter what, whether humans exist or not, there will be as there has been in the past, according to what you have just said, another ice age. And then the ice will melt, and then we'll go back to the start of another 10,000 year cycle of global warming and it'll happen again. If such happens, better now than later, better me rather than my grandkids.
