I'm skeptical, as Hart-Yang is a partisan poll. But Lugar hasn't had a viable opponent since 1982, and a whole generation of Hoosiers has grown up since then.

It's time for Lugar to retire. We've got a plethora of GOP Congressmen waiting to ascend the ladder in Indiana.

Lugar's got one more term left in him. Roemer might make it closer than normal for Lugar, but Dick would prevail in the end.

This is so typical of today's Indiana Dems. They're trotting out political has-beens. What happened to that "deep bench" that Evan Bayh (supposedly) helped create when he was governor?

I'm sure Lugar does have one more term in him, but after 30 years (as of Jan 2007), we can do better. It's embarrassing we have him and the phony Evan Bayh in the other Senate seat from IN.

Tim Roemer must miss Washington D.C. If he wanted a political comeback, he would be better off running in his old district, the IN-02. Stronger candidates to challenge Lugar would be either Indy Mayor Bart Peterson or Kernan.

Mike Pence for Senate. Too bad he's more interested in the White House.

Lugar's been in the Senate so long that he has moss growing on his North side.
My guess is that most Hoosiers have never heard of Roemer.

I won't cry if Sen. Lugar gets beaten. But I think it's unlikely.

Not only is Evan Bayh phony, but what did he ever do?

In that he's would be a viable candiate rather than a sacraficial lamb. He would get some free press from the lamestream media, due to his having served on the 9/11 Commission, and perhaps raise some decent money.

Roemer? Didn't Chris Chiccola nearly knock him out in 00? (and then take the open seat in 02)

Tim Roemer was a partisan disgrace on the 9/11 Commission.

Yes, it's a marginal district that became more Republican in the late 1990's.

Roemer got there by unseating John Hiler.

Not gonna happen. He's not crazy enough to run. Lugar is too senior and too well respected.

Before someone goes and points out that Byrd is also very senior and vulnerable, Byrd is a dark blue pol from a deep red state. Lugar is a red poll from a deep red state.

Roemer may run at some point. For Governor in '08, perhaps, or Senate in the unfortunate event that Bahy is elected President or VP. But he won't run against Lugar.

Absolutely. I think those of us in the Hoosier State will have excellent long-term memory recall if and when Roemer decides to take on Lugar.
