US Indians beat Maori for health
The New Zealand Herald ^ | 09.06.05

The health gap between Maori and European New Zealanders is wider than between Native Americans and the United States majority white population, a researcher from Auckland University has found.

The results of the study by senior lecturer Dale Bramley, comparing disparities in indigenous health, appeared in the May edition of the American Journal of Public Health.

Dr Bramley believes the situation could be significantly improved in New Zealand by introducing policies to reduce inequalities, such as providing more services specifically to Maori.

He compared a range of health indicators in the two countries, including life expectancy and infant mortality, immunisation, cervical cancer and breast cancer screening, smoking, obesity and diabetes, some cardiac procedures and kidney transplants.

"In the case of nearly all of these indicators, the health status of Maori people was found to be lower than that of American Indians, when compared to the majority European populations."

For example, Maori males' life expectancy was 8.9 years less than that of non-Maori males. The corresponding figure for Native American males was 7.4 years. Maori showed the highest prevalence of smoking with 48.6 per cent of adults - twice that of the majority population. In the US, 33 per cent of adult Native Americans were smokers - 36 per cent higher than the white population.

"The two countries differ in their approaches to reducing the disparities in the health status of indigenous peoples, and in recent years the United States has had considerable success in eliminating these differences in some areas," Dr Bramley said.

"This is particularly the case with childhood immunisation programmes, where there is no difference in the coverage between American Indians and the white majority.

"In the US they have a system of delivering health services directly to the indigenous population.

It is controlled by American Indians and community based, so it [reaches] directly into American Indian communities.

"In New Zealand, while we have around 200 Maori health providers, many in rural areas, the majority of Maori people still attend non-Maori health providers and the responsiveness of non-Maori providers to Maori could be further enhanced."

Better yet, get the NZ government to allow the Maoris to own and operate casinos!

Till I reread it, I had images of Maoris getting 50 lashes from a flu-racked Tonto.

How many "full-blooded" American Indians do you suppose there really are left? For that matter, how many Americans whose families have lived in the USA for more than a couple of generations do you think are withOUT American Indian heritage?

We all have the same ingredients...just different measures of each.

That's good to learn. I've met some Kiwis who were among the most smug, supercilious America-bashers I ever had the misfortune to know. They were so scathing in their opinion of America, and so certain of the perfection of socialism as practiced in New Zealand, that one would almost have thought they were French. I will have to throw this in their faces if I run across them again.

Unfortunately it is true. Kiwis are in general like Howard Dean on all issues, ezxcept on race and immigration, which on these 2 issues they welcome someone like Pat Buchanan.

(The reason why they hate Asian migrants like us is because we are more conservative economically - believe it or not, we mostly vote the conservatives in general elections. Imagine 50,000 each year immigrating from red state America and it wouldn't be long before NZ is tainted red from their POV.)

It is what the elites define what it means. We have now stretched the original meaning of Maori beyond recognition: anyone who can prove he is 1/16th Maori can say he is Maori could register as a Maori in elections - they vote for separate electorate (district) seats.

Bulls***? This is from personal experience over the years. These people are some of the most hypocritical and smug people I have ever seen anywhere in the world.

I doubt your experience of "anywhere in the world" amounts to a hill of cha kwai teow -- and that's not in any case what you said.

What you said was that "Kiwis are in general like Howard Dean [A moronic envy-motivated, hatred engined and rage driven retard] on all issues, ezxcept on race and immigration, which on these 2 issues they welcome someone like Pat Buchanan."

And that they: ".... hate Asian migrants like us is because we are more conservative economically - believe it or not, we mostly vote the conservatives in general elections. Imagine 50,000 each year immigrating from red state America and it wouldn't be long before NZ is tainted red from their POV."

All of which venom, resentment and spite is based in your own ingrate's lack of self-worth, your own projected prejudice and your own projected racism.

Any hatred you feel in New Zealand is your own hatred. None of your hatred nor any other of your feelings and/or emotions belong to anyone else and only an alteration of your own attitude will alter your perceptions in that area. Your "feelings" are just that and aught not be confused with facts.

And if New Zealand and New Zealanders, in their own country, to which they have welcomed you and among whom you are able to find the safety and security that are, since July 1 1997, totally lacking in your native Once-FRee-British Hong Kong -- surrendered on that date to effective medieval serfdom at the hands of the Peking-based pack of lying, looting, thieving, invading, colonizing, brutally-enslaving, ethnicly-cleansing, mass-murdering gangster bastards that so grandiosely calls itself "china" -- are not to your liking?

Leave.

F'off.

Go find some place that lives down to your expectations of it.

Just be sure, though, to not let the Kiwis' welcoming door hit you in your arse on your way out -- and, when you arrive at your next destination, to check your own defects of character at the door on the way in.

Or you will again meet yourself in the faces of eveyone else who lives there.

And will find only the same "Howard Dean" and "Patrick J Buchanan" Honkers-Chinese-hating bastards there, too.

With different heads on 'em.

Blessings -- Brian

Calm down Brian. It's the Left and "moderates"' who are the most racist. The conservatives I have met here are wonderful people (ACT and National). In fact, I have done my best in mingling into NZ - it is THEIR attitude that causes the problem and it is up to them to fix the problem.
