Police Officer Runs Over Hit-And-Run Victim
POSTED: 11:02 pm EDT June 9, 2005
GASTONIA, N.C. -- A police officer responding to an emergency call of a man struck by a car accidentally ran over the victim with his cruiser Thursday, authorities said.
Investigators remained uncertain whether the victim was already dead when he was struck a second time by the police car, said Sheriff's Department Capt. Tony Robinson.
The North Carolina State Highway Patrol was investigating.
The 911 call was received early Thursday, police said.
After reaching the scene, officer J.C. May was blinded by the high beams of a parked car and struck the victim.
The man was in the road and was pronounced dead at the scene. His name was not available, Robinson said.
May was placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
DUH !
Oops.
I thought it was a speed bump.
Was the officer DWD? (drivin' while dunkin')
Surrre he was dead before the office ran over him.
Doh!!!! Sorry about that.....
Sounds like a Reno 911 episode.
Died from a drug problem... being drug underneath a police car.
You have the right to remain silent...
Geez...talk about your two-time loser.
Good thing we have trained professionals to keep us safe.
Some days you're the bug.
Or DWDD?
(driving while dunking doughnuts)
Well, at least he didn't back up over him again
that can't look good on his record ... wonder if he was eating a donut at the time.
"That's okay, I have a cunning plan . . ."
(maybe the can blame it on a black adder or something . . .)

Step 1: When arriving at the scene of a fatal accident, be certain the victim is dead.
Does this reclassify it as a "hit and stay?"

hoooooly....moo-moos
And then he prolly issued him a citation for obstructing traffic while he laid between the wheels in the roadway.
mc
Would that be a drug underdose? Drug under dose tires.
looks like the original perp will have a good defense that he didn't kill the guy.
He's dead, Jim.
That's what I meant, actually
Step 1: When arriving at the scene of a fatal accident, be certain the victim is dead.
"Just a minute." [Bang!] "Okay, he's dead. Now what?"
Sounds like a scene out of Reno 911
Uh-oh!
From local news sources:
According to police, the caller apparently did not give the right location and the officer hit the victim who was laying in the road.Police said there was a car in the center turn lane with its high beams on. They said the officer assumed it was someone delivering newspapers and drove around the car. It turned out the car was the good Samaritan on the phone with the 911 operator who was trying to mark the location of the body. Police said the cars high beams blinded the officer and he hit the body.
DUH! Wouldn't it have made just a smidgen more sense to pull over to the shoulder of the road and turn on emergency blinkers instead of bright lights?
Btw, the "early Thursday" reported in the story was at 3:30 AM.
Those cruisers are deadly weapons you know.
I am cracking up at work and my co-worker is asking what I find so funny. I cannot stop laughing. I'm sorry he's dead but...everyon'es comments are killing me!
This will be a great one for the Lawyers.
There is an expression in Tort Law that says: "One is not entitled to a healthy victim".
He ran over the guy, dead or not.
Can you imagine what the good samaritan thought when that cop ran over the guy? He must have been thinking,"well, so much for calling 911 and getting help." Wonder if he threw his hands in the air and rolled his eyes.
The deceased suspect has been charged with interfering with the motion of an official vehicle.
LOL
Bet the samaritan gets charged with something, if only to ease the officer's embarassment.
NC bump..
This here's funny . . . I don't care who y'are.
Ah, yeah... "NC.. "bump". How awful for all involved. How just awful.
GASTON COUNTY -- Investigators have figured out why a 22-year-old man was lying in the middle of a Gaston County Highway early Thursday morning and they have charged a 19-year-old with the victims murder.
According to police, Kenneth Bishop and Joseph Bradshaw went to a party Wednesday night at a home on Dallas-Cherryville Highway.
Bishop walked out of the home after police say he got into an argument with Bradshaw.
Police determined that Bradshaw and two other people went to look for Bishop and found him walking along Dallas-Cherryville Highway. Bishop and Bradshaw got into another argument and Bradshaw hit Bishop over the head with some type of blunt object, police said. Bishop fell to the ground and was left lying in the road.
A woman called 911 around 3:30 a.m. after she discovered Bishops body.
"There is someone lying on the side of the road and I think they've been hit by a car. And I don't know if they're dead or not," the caller stated to 911.
As more details come out, I'm beginning to wonder if the cops were set up ... if maybe the headlights and the wrong location being reported were a deliberate attempt to cover up the crime that had been committed.

[Died from a drug problem... being drug underneath a police car.]
"Investigators remained uncertain whether the victim was already dead when he was struck a second time by the police car" ....
So they backed over him a couple times so it would be impossible to tell.
I'm sorry, I do feel for those involved but the fact this happened where it did is just so Gaston Countyish (I know that's not a word but if it would happen anywhere, it's Gastonia)
As Boortz would say...
"He's DRT"
(Dead Right There!)
He probably majored in soccer game crowd control at the academy.
Bump?
Probably more like a "thump, thump."
