Special Report: Iranians Unite! Pro-Democracy Iranians Boycott Islamic Republic'’s Rigged Anti-Democratic Elections

In an historic show of unity, Iranian opposition leaders together drafted and signed the following declaration. The leaders represent a broad spectrum of Iranian groups around the world calling for a boycott of the June 17th Presidential election. READ MORE

More than 17o leaders have signed it, still others are seeking to. It is important to let the media know that Iranians from a range of political views are now united in boycotting the June 17th election.

Also important:

• I have begun a schedule of Pro-Democracy events for the coming week. I hope this will be helpful to news editors looking to follow the events in Iran. It will be updated regularly. Check for updates under the daily briefing list in our right sidebar.

  • Africasia reported that reformist candidate Moin was attacked at a campaign rally Friday.
  • BBC News says that missing Iran writer, Ganji, spoke out. Update: He gave an interview while "missing." He is now back in Evin prison and has resumed his hunger strike.
  • ABC.net.au reported the IAEA confirmed Iran has halted its nuclear activity.
  • YahooNews reported that Iran hardliners fear a defeat in the election.
  • SMCCDI asks for help in stopping the Iranian government's illegal election polling places on U.S. soil. The Financial Times also reported.
  • SMCCDI reported a coalition of Iranian groups has announced a protest against the violation of women rights in front of Tehran University, Sunday June 12. Adnkronos International added details.

Saturday June 11

• Student Union members from the both Medical Sciences University and the University of Shiraz (Western Iran) plan to hold a demonstration on Saturday “to protest the new wave of pressure on the student movement and in support of political prisoners.” Location: the University of Shiraz, in the morning.

• In Los Angeles, California USA. Iranian opposition groups will be holding demonstrations and joining a hunger strike in support of Iranian dissidents in Iranian prisons. Reza Pahlavi, son of the former Shah is on a hunger strike there. Location: The Federal Building, Santa Monica.
  

Sunday June 12

• 30 Women's groups have organized a protest against the discrimination of Women. This is expected to be a significant event. It has been endorsed by many leading women in Iran, including Simin Bahani and noble prize winner Shirin Ebadi. Location: Tehran University.

• In Stockholm, Sweden Iranian opposition groups will hold a demonstration asking Iranians to boycott the elections. Location: unknown.
• In Los Angeles, California USA, Iranian opposition groups will be holding demonstrations and joining a hunger strike in support of Iranian dissidents in Iranian prisons. Reza Pahlavi, son of the former Shah is on a hunger strike there.Location: The Federal Building, Santa Monica.

Thursday June 16

• The Hakha Movement, associated with Ahura Yazdi has called for people to go into the street at 10AM. They claim the regime will fall on this date.

Friday June 17 - Presidential Election Day

• The Iran of Tomorrow Movement is calling for pro-democracy forces to stay in their homes and boycott the election. They are also asking Iranians, under the cover of dark, at 5:30AM to burn tires in the streets and alleys of their homes as a sign they are boycotting the election.
• Anjomane Padeshahi, associated with Fouladvand has called for people to burn buses, flatten tires, place barbed wire in streets to show displeasure for the election. In the past, the regime has taken busloads of "voters" with false id's around to varous polling stations to show the international media a steady stream of "voters." This appears to target these buses. This group is one of the few groups advocating a violent overthrow of the regime.
  
• In Frankfurt, Germany Iranian opposition groups will be Iranian opposition groups will hold a demonstration asking Iranians to boycott the elections.Location: the Iranian Embassy.
• In Oslo, Norway, Iranian opposition groups will hold a demonstration asking Iranians to boycott the elections. Location: the Iranian Embassy.
• In Stockholm, Sweden, Iranian opposition groups will hold a demonstration asking Iranians to boycott the elections. Location: the EU offices.

Mojtaba Saminejad is an Iranian blogger who was arrested for reporting on the arrest of three fellow Persian bloggers. Today, he is leading a hunger strike from his cell in Gohar Dashat prison outside Tehran, which is known for its abuse of inmates. Motjaba was arrested for reporting the earlier arrest of three of his fellow Iranian bloggers. (Iran has arrested over 20 bloggers over the last year.) Iranian bloggers who have been released have reported being the victims of torture.

Under the domination of Ayatollah Khamenei and the Supreme Council, Iranians are not free to hold their leaders accountable. But you are. Send a message to the Iranian regime demanding that Mojtaba be granted pardon and unconditional release. Outside support is vital to ensuring Motjaba's release.
