Mother Explains Fatal Pit Bull Mauling
Yahoo News ^ | June 12, 2005

SAN FRANCISCO - The mother of a 12-year-old boy killed in his own home by one of the family's two pit bulls said she had been so concerned about one of the dogs that she shut her son in the basement to protect him.

Maureen Faibish said she ordered Nicholas to stay in the basement while she did errands on June 3, the day he was attacked by one or both of the dogs. She said she was worried about the male dog, Rex, who was acting possessive because the female, Ella, was in heat.

"I put him down there, with a shovel on the door," Faibish told the San Francisco Chronicle. "And I told him: `Stay down there until I come back.' Typical Nicky, he wouldn't listen to me."

Nicholas apparently found a way to open the basement door.

Faibish said she felt compelled to call the Chronicle Saturday to defend herself against widespread public outrage directed at families with children who own pit bulls.

"My kids got along great with (the dogs)," she told the newspaper. "We were never seeing any kind of violent tendencies."

Faibish found her son's body in a bedroom. He was covered in blood from several wounds, including a major head injury. No charges have been filed.

Ella was shot to death by a police officer the day of the attack. Rex was taken to a shelter, but Faibish said she wanted him put down.

"I think of Rex as someone who ... murdered my child," she said.

Really? Beyond your comprehension?

But not beyond that of the pit bull apologists on this forum.

I have owned a half dozen dogs, and you could lock them IN the basement with my kid and all they would have done was lick him till he couldn't have controlled his giggling.

The issue in this tragedy is NOT who or what was where when. It's....

Pit bulls are killers.

"She locks the kid in the basement, not the dogs?"

My question exactly! How about taking the kid with her? What a wacko, too bad it cost her child his life. And the two dogs, of course!

Now that this fact has come out, I think she can do some hard time for depraved indifference to human life, child abuse, neglect, etc. Locked up, but still in a dangerous situation, like she left her boy.

I would shoot the Dog before I put my child in the basement. If the Dog was a threat, it should never have been in the home, LOCK HER UP for reckless endangerment

let's see here......

"I was so concerned about the child molester next door that I closed my blinds"...

I was so concerned about the fire raging in the kitchen that I went into the living room".....

I was so concerned about the flood waters outside that I turned the faucet off".......

Can't take your child with you, when ya go to score dope, prostitute or get your nails done, don't ya know? Gotta keep the house safe from your neighbors- lock the child in the basement- so your killers can earn their keep.

Perhaps she was under direct orders from P.E.T.A. not demean her dogs by placing them in the basement...

Otherwise, she might have lost her "most favored S.F. liberal" status at the next meeting.

Thanks to you, cow. Too bad you didn't care about what the animal was capable of before you stuck the poor kid down in the basement.

On the basement bit, we don't know what the basement was like. It could be a kids paradise, with video games and pool table, etc. He could have been giving her a hard time, "Mom I want to stay and watch TV" type stuff.

The difficulty I have is that she was seeing warning signs in the pit bull, and went off and left the kid unsupervised at all. Warning signs of any kind in an aggressive dog breed is something you don't handle passively. She had two unneutered pit bulls? Was she a breeder? Then she should have known better.

There are a whole bunch of rules for handling the aggressive breeds that you don't need for other dogs. For instance, never pet them without making them obey an order first. Make them sit for their pets. Dogs like this are not like Shetland Sheepdogs. They take knowledgeable handling.

"My kids got along great with (the dogs)," she told the newspaper. "We were never seeing any kind of violent tendencies."

There is a huge contradiction here. She put the kid in the basement because she was afraid about one of the dogs. Why would she be afraid if the dog and the kid got along?
