that's ironic, after the media leftists turned this country against the vietnam war. remember, the chicoms did invade vietnam not that long ago.

and, now i'm supposed to be concerned about north vietnam's security?

They aren't thrilled with him, but of late, they've begun to echo his sentiment, blaming the US for the problems on the Korean penninsula. I think they are hunkering down for a Cold War style struggle with the US, and that means even an idiot like Jung-Il will be useful to them.

I read a book by Nelson DeMille; "Up Country" was the title. The mission on top of the mission was to secure a long term lease to Cam Rahn Bay. I still think that's a possibility.

If we can become allies with Japan, whom we kicked their collective butts when they were in the Teikoku Imperial Japan "Tenno Heika, Banzai!!" mode, and work it out with them some 50-60 years later, then certainly we can become allies with Vietnam (to a lesser extent), some thirty years later after they kicked our butts out of Vietnam. You win some you lose some, history rolls on.

How to explain a US military alliance in the early 21st century with Hanoi itself, the dreaded DRV, to all those poor names on The Wall sent to stop "Cong San Chu Nghia". It's almost like WE should demand Hanoi pay US reparations to our dead's families, for our fighting their communism which they have moved to abandon day by day since 1975, as they themselves have seen 'what works'. Oh, Irony of Ironies.

If I'd have my druthers, they would scrap one party Viet-Communism once and for all, as a precondition, and give total access to finding any MIAs and POWs.

We have no permanent Friends. We have no permanant Enemies.

We only have Permanant American Interests. Other than that, anything at all to screw up Red China in the region I welcome, long-term.

Not more of this "my enemy's enemy is my friend" business. I hope further democratisation of Vietnam is a condition of any future alliance.
