It all depends on what the government decides is "wrong".

If you are not doing anything wrong, then you have nothing to worry about.

Waco, Ruby Ridge, Billy Dale(railroaded by Klintons), Bull Connor, King George III and Lord North.

Government isn't trustworthy enough with that power.

I absolutely despise this line of reasoning.

With it, I can say: "If you are not doing anything wrong, then you shouldn't worry about warrantless searches."

With it, I can say: "If you are not doing anything wrong, then you shouldn't worry 24/7 automated surveillance."

With it, I can say: "If you are not doing anything wrong, then you shouldn't worry about financial privacy."

Your take on it is the antithesis of what this country should -- and used to -- stand for.

So perhaps you would support putting video cameras in everyones' homes and cars? I mean, if you aren't doing anything wrong, what's the problem?

"Now those who seek absolute power, even though they seek it to do what they regard as good, are simply demanding the right to enforce their own version of heaven on earth, and let me remind you they are the very ones who always create the most hellish tyranny." - Barry Goldwater "If the author of the Declaration of Independence were to utter such a sentiment today, the Post Office Department could exclude him from the mail, grand juries could indict him for sedition and criminal syndicalism, legislative committees could seize his private papers ... and United States Senators would be clamoring for his deportation that he... should be sent back to live with the rest of the terrorists." - Frank I. Cobb

"The evils of tyranny are rarely seen but by him who resists it." -John Hay

"If Tyranny and Oppression come to this land, it will be in the guise of fighting a foreign enemy" - James Madison

"If men, through fear, fraud, or mistake, should in terms renounce or give up any natural right, the eternal law of reason and the grand end of society would absolutely vacate such renunciation. The right to freedom being the gift of Almighty God, it is not in the power of man to alienate this gift and voluntarily become a slave." - Samuel Adams

"The first people totalitarians destroy or silence are men of ideas and free minds." - Isaiah Berlin

"Every effort to confine Americanism to a single pattern, to constrain it to a single formula, is disloyalty to everything that is valid in Americanism." -Henry Steele Commager

The problem with that thinking is that you are not taking into account the definitions and standards of "right" and "wrong", and the probability that some unscrupulous politician may one day change those definitions to legally violate the rights of innocent citizens.

"If you are not doing anything wrong, then you have nothing to worry about."

Oh, statements like that irk the heck outta me.

With that kind of thinking, we will have government cameras watching every aspect of our lives, snooping into all of our private records, monitoring our emails, etc., etc...

...but, we shouldn't mind that if we aren't doing anything wrong, right?

Does privacy mean anything to you?

Oh yeah, I know it is already happening but it will only get worse when Americans give into it.

Wrong in who's eyes? George W. Bush's eyes or Hillary Clinton's eyes? Granted an administration as corrupt as the Clintons wouldn't need to justify their actions as per the Patriot Act, but that kind of power in the wrong administration's hands would be frightening.

I voted cut back, for the most part I like the PA, but parts of it don't sit well with me.

I agree the act should be permanent, but if this thing you wrote were true, there would be nobody getting shafted by the Feds over the Endangered Species Act, wetlands or the Americans with Disabilities Act.

just damb.

You ever hear Thomas Jefferson’s quote. Something like, Government is like fire if it is well kept it will keep you warm, when it gets out of control it will burn you.

If you are not doing anything wrong, then you have nothing to worry about.

That's what I thought...until I had my driver's license suspended because a doctor felt offended when I didn't accept his diagnosis which he made in all of 15 minutes without one test.

It took six months, a whole batch of other tests to prove stupid wrong, and a whole lot of bureaucratic crap to get it reinstated. And, no, the State Board of Medicine didn't do a bloody thing to protect the patient's rights.

People convicted of drunk driving got their license back faster than I did.

Not only do I think the Patriot Act should be dumped, I think even the name "Patriot Act" sounds like something the Communist Soviet propoganda machine thought up.
