Rich-poor gap gaining attention
Christian Science Monitor via Yahoo ^ | 06/14/2005 | Peter Grier

The income gap between the rich and the rest of the US population has become so wide, and is growing so fast, that it might eventually threaten the stability of democratic capitalism itself.

As if the gap defines wealth or standard of living. Compare the "poor" in this nation to the real poor in others. Poverty in America can only be self-created.

A natural mathematical function of a growing economy and growing wealth of the people is a growing gap between rich and poor. Can't be helped.

"data show that the top 1 percent of the population received 11.4 percent of national after-tax income in 2002, points out Isaac Shapiro of the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities in a new study. That's up from a 7.5 percent share in 1979. By contrast, the middle fifth of the population saw its share of national after-tax income fall over that same period of time, from 16.5 to 15.8."

Received??? Share???

Whatever happened to EARNED.

Such Marxist, communist, socialist bias by the author.

Every time you double the income of a population, the difference between the upper income group and the lower income group widens.

In dirt-power societies, there is no wealth gap.

If Bill Gates is worth billions, that does not affect my wealth. If the Government decides it must regulate how much wealth a person can earn, that affects the economic freedom we all have and that does affect my wealth.

Remember when you can't use the "worst economy since Hoover" line they gotta figure out another angle. The "rich and poor gap" and the plight of the homeless only find their way into the media during Republican administrations.

Old and tired. Just like the ideology they all believe in.

I saw somewhere that some 40% of Americans live under the $34,00 (on the family of four scale). That's astounding considering the fact that so many families have more than one person out in the workforce.
It really brings home the obscenity of the worst executive salaries.

The "Alive/Dead" gap is pretty huge too - and L Ron Hubbard - still dead.

Greenspan is rightfully pointing out that something is dreadfully wrong with our education system. The liberals do not want to hear this and would prefer to say that he is ignoring other issues. They are looking for a way to Deanspin this into a class warfare issue. Greenspan is right. The public education experiment has failed. It's time to let go and move on to something that works.

Explain to me why executive salaries are anybody's concern besides the shareholders of the companies by whom the executives are employed.

BTW, how come nobody complained a few years back when Barbra Streisand got $20 million for a one night performance. How come nobody talked about the gap between what she made that night and what the guy who swept up the ailes after everybody went home got?

I assume it is the well deserved "[Barf Alert!]" missing from this thread's title.

The solution is for the poor to get their collective thumbs out of their butts, get to work, and earn more.

You can't import 15-20 million illegal 3rd world immigrants (and constantly beg for more) and then not expect to have an income gap.
