Police: Suspect burned girlfriend (Burned his name into her back)
Syracuse Post-Standard ^ | 6/13/05 | Jim Read

Posted on 06/14/2005 6:23:16 PM PDT by wagglebee

A Syracuse man was charged with assault after he tortured his girlfriend by burning his name into her back with a heated knife blade, according to police.

Marcel Tirado, 23, of 501 Seymour St., was charged with assault and unlawful imprisonment, both felonies, and a misdemeanor charge of criminal possession of a weapon, said Sgt. Tom Connellan, a police spokesman.

"It's incredibly cruel," Connellan said. "It's beyond imagination what this woman was going through." The woman, whom police did not identify, also had scars she told police were from earlier encounters with Tirado, Connellan said.

Police gave this account:

Tirado and his girlfriend, 25, argued about 11 p.m. Saturday at her home in the 500 block of West Brighton Avenue. Tirado pinned the woman, who was sitting in a chair, against the kitchen wall by shoving a table against her.

While keeping her pinned, he heated the blade of a 4-inch folding knife on the gas stove and began burning the skin around a tattoo on the woman's arm. He also burned part of the tattoo away. Tirado threatened to kill the woman if she screamed.

"She was scared to death," Connellan said. "She honestly believed he was going to kill her."

After burning her arm, Tirado reheated the knife and burned "Marcel" into the woman's back, police said. The burn, 12 inches wide, goes from shoulder to shoulder, Connellan said.

Tirado freed the woman and left the house, Connellan said. The woman called police about 11:45 p.m., Connellan said.

The woman showed officers 20 other scars on her arms and legs where she had been burned, Connellan said.

The previous attacks were in March and May, Connellan said. The woman said Tirado also used a heated screwdriver to make the burns, he said.

The woman was taken to University Hospital, where she was released after treatment. Connellan said she is now in a safe place. She and Tirado have a 5-year-old child, he said.

Police found Tirado when he returned to the woman's home about 7:30 a.m. Sunday. He was being held in the Justice Center pending his arraignment in City Court today. Officers took from Tirado a folding knife with a blade apparently discolored by heat, Connellan said.

If he wanted to get away with it, burning his name into her back wasn't a good thing to do.

Hope she never goes back to this scum.

"If he wanted to get away with it, burning his name into her back wasn't a good thing to do."

When I was a kid, my Dad had a woodburner that for some reason I was obsessed with. One day I heated it up and burned my name into the side of his workbench. When he saw it, he called me on it of course, and I said my sister did it, putting my name there to make it look like I did it.

He just said, "Your sister isn't that smart; but good try!"

ROFLMAO! We still laugh about that one to this day.

(Not this this situation is any laughing matter...)

It's too bad that society has such a double standard when it comes to these things.

When guys do stupid things, we can talk all about it and point out in minute details everything he did wrong and stupid.

But I bet if I called this dumb-ass chick stupid I'd get a lecture about my sensitivity.

Unless you are physically tied down with anything stronger than velcro, there is no such thing as being trapped in anything. She has a brain, she used it poorly, and she is stupid.

We should hold women to the same standards we hold men.

That unforunately is a simpistic outlook on abusive relationships. Decision-making becomes impaired where using the so-called brain is not the issue at all. This is an issue of the will which unfortunately becomes weakned through intimidation and fear.

You should read up on it.

I have read extensively on this topic, but what I am addressing is the difference with the way we treat women versus men in situations like these.

When we see a wussie guy acting stupid for whatever reason we don't give him an episode of Oprah and explain why he can't do the smart thing. We don't cauddle the heck out of him and assuage his guilt for not being able to do what's right.

In guy culture, it's almost perfectly acceptable to go slap him upside the head and tell him "snap out of it, dumb ass!"

Methinks the ladies need to adopt some of that bravado.

Another example that fits this pattern. If a woman has some hormonal or depressive episode and kills her children, we get the proverbial Oprah TV treatment and we all get to learn new things about how pregnency is hard, how women are not responsible for their behaviors an so on...

But if a guy has his own hormonal problems, say with testosterone for example, and say, has a habit of throwing his fist through the walls, we don't explain away his responsibility for his behavior. The most tame treatment we give him is to tag him with a euphimistic "anger management issues" label, and tell him to do something about that before we take his family away from him, steal his wages, and cart his butt off to jail.

Basically, what I am saying is my perception is that our society holds men more accountable for their actions and accepts far fewer excuses for bad behavior.

And before anyone assumes otherwise, I am not at all arguing that we should release men from the higher standard of ownership and responsibility for their actions. I am wishing that the females in society would step up and encourage each other (maybe not with the back of head slap :-) to truthfully see when women are doing foolish things, or when they should own culpability.

I am one for personal reponsibility in one's actions. Even if those actions are precipitated by hormones, intimidating partners, and what not. With all the poor choices I have made in my life, I am responsible for each and every one of them, even if I had biochemical issues or emotional issues which led me to make those poor choices.

So I am not disagreeing with you. Men and women both need to be held to a very high standard of accountabiliyt. I HATE the victim mentality. It is much better for society when people own up to their actions and make amends, or make good healthy changes away from destructive behavior.

I don't think it should be a higher standard for males than females.

Don't be stupid. This is what she said.....

That unfortunately is a simplistic outlook on abusive relationships. Decision-making becomes impaired where using the so-called brain is not the issue at all. This is an issue of the will which unfortunately becomes weakened through intimidation and fear.

She was explaining to you what happens to the mind of an abused woman. You are trying to twist that into something completely different.

All she is telling you is how manipulative an abuser can be and you are often unable to think the same way you might.

You are sitting at your computer, with quite an air of superiority, deciding what an abused woman should do.

You are either a man or some self righteous woman who thinks she would never let herself get into such a situation.

I used to think I would never let it happen to me, but it did. He was so unbelievably smooth and manipulative that by the time he showed his true demon-self, I was so confused that I was nowhere close to the same woman I had been before, and am now.

Until you have experienced something similar or think about this with an open mind, I think you should just STFU.

I second your response.

I have a friend who could have written what you posted.

It was very eye-opening for me to see what she went through, and to go through the experience of helping her to break away from that manipulative and abusive situation.

Through the use of physical and mental abuse he had her totally beated down and convinced that she was completely dependent on him.

I will try to get to that in a sec...

Let me tell you what I think with all my heart.
Please do, I am trying to communicate my POV to you and I think more clarity from you will help me understand why you disagree with my original post.

I think you are one of those people completely capable of manipulating women in this manner.
You think that advocating personal responsibility and perhaps a bit of introspection makes me a manipulator? Come on, I know that can't be really true or else you would be on DU.com instead of FR.com.

You are trying that crap with me.
Well, I have a feeling that if I insist that it isn't true, you aren't gonna buy it. In my experience I have found that people who debate with people and swear like sailors typically aren't there to come to a meeting of the minds.

I'm not playing this game with you.
Excellent, then we shall consider the game-playing portion of our conversation-cum-rant retired.

Now what I am trying to say is that I do not think that we should treat women differently from men when it comes to being frank with them about the intelligence of their choices.

What should we teach our daughters? What it sounds to me like you are saying is that 1) a lot of men are pigs, and 2) if you are with one, it's his fault, not yours.

That is not how I am raising my daughters. My daughters are getting raised the same way I would raise a son: 1) a lot of women are mentally instable with control issues and baggage, and 2) if you fail to RUN LIKE HELL from a poor relationship choice then you have made your bed and have to sleep in it. Oh and, stay away from the ones with a lot of cats.

I disagree with you because I've been there. I was from the very best of homes, well loved and always disciplined fairly.

My parents were supportive and loving. I was in the top ten of my high school graduating class. I was successful and assertive.

I was a police officer and a paramedic. In both of those positions, I saw many, many abused women and thought the same narrow minded crap that you do.

Then it happened to me.

You are either one of these manipulative men, or an arrogant and uniformed woman.

Which is it?

Actually, I'm leaning towards you being the manipulator considering the complete revulsion I feel instinctively towards you.

Women can be manipulated so that they may not be able to think as clearly. I already said that to you. She hasn't committed a crime or anything. She is ABUSED.

What part of that don't you get? Are you saying it's her fault for being abused?

That's exactly what it sounds like you are saying.

The woman does have to make the decision to get out of there, but what you are being told and you are deliberately mischaracterizing is that the decision making process gets altered and things aren't as clear as they would be for a non abused person.

You think I swear like a sailor because I used the word "crap"?

Grow up.

I have two daughters. My teenage daughters are being taught by me, what to watch for in order to help spot a manipulative abusing demon of a man.

My mother didn't have the chance to help me. She didn't know what one of those beasts looked like.

I do and my daughters do too now.

I feel sorry for your daughters. If they get into an abusive marriage, you will make it their fault.

Just think about that right now. Look at your precious daughters. See their sweet trusting faces and gentle spirits.

NOW imagine about some man completely fooling them by using charm, money, lies and carefully built and preplanned seduction and manipulation.

Then suddenly he shows his true self and hurts her.

Remember. In your sick world, it's her fault.

Besides who said anything about going back to the beast. We were talking about personal experiences of me and the other poster.

I never went back, but it did take awhile to realize what he had done to me and get my head together enough to leave.

I am guessing that the meds helped out a little too?

Look, I am not saying it is her fault, and I don't doubt you when you say that your head was in a really bad place. But they doesn't mean you were not wrong to stay with him. You were wrong, you finally got your head right, and got away, but you were wrong, and you are completely offended to see that in writing.

All I was saying is that most men do not react that way when our mistakes are discussed. I bet you are seething that I wrote "you were wrong" up there. All I am saying is that men do not do that. Men don't get their panties all wadded up like that.

For your daughter's sake, stop being a horse's behind and listen to what the women with experience on this thread are telling you or you may watch it happen to one of them.

Ok, so I tell them "some men are pigs, if you end up with one, it's his fault (even though I have taught you how to take care of yourself), so please wallow in self pity and make sure you have The Lifetime Network on your cable system?"

Instead how about my way: "some men are pigs, here are the things to look out for: {list of pigman things}; if you nonetheless find yourself with a pig man, you have to get out, it's YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to do it; it's NOT too late...and make sure you block the Oprah Channel"
