LEBANON — Former Ohio Rep. Jean Schmidt edged former Congressman Bob McEwen by 705 votes in the special primary to pick the Republican to represent the party in an Aug. 2 election to replace former Congressman Rob Portman, according to unofficial totals.

Schmidt won with 11,486 votes after results in Hamilton and Clermont counties were added to earlier returns showing McEwen with the lead among 11 GOP candidates running to replace Portman, who is leaving the 2nd Congressional District seat after 12 years to become the U.S. foreign trade representative.... Brinkman finished third with 8,554 votes, Hamilton County Commissioner Pat DeWine fourth with 5,041.

Gee, I wonder why the son of the great "Deal Maker" did so badly in the special election? Lots of money, great organization, famous name. Hmmm, just never can tell nowadays.

DeWine came in FOURTH place?! If that doesn't send a harsh message to Papa RINO, I don't know what will. Superb work, Ohio Republicans!

Imagine. Primary voters, conservative activists, moderates strangely absent, voting for anybody but someone named DeWine.

I guess maybe the Great Emancipation of Moderates Proclamation didn't well in this Ohio district.

Huh. Almost enough to make someone consider primary voters may not be as forgiving as general election voters and that just *maybe* Republicans shouldn't tick them off.

Any Ohio Freepers have insight? I thought Schmidt was pretty liberal. Did the voters send DeWhine a message at the expense of his son?

I think the real conservative in this race lost and Schmidt is pretty liberal. I'd like to see some Ohioans weigh in.

Here's to the elephants' memory.

NOT ONE PENNY!!!

I'm angry enough to pledge money to real conservatives who will run against these RINO's and replace them. How about $100.00 a head?

I encourage everyone to attack!

From what I'd seen I thought Brinkman was the conservative in the race and Schmidt a liberal (or perhaps more rightly a moderate).

Isnt Schmidt a RINO and Brinkman the conservative in this race?

Schmidt is not liberal, she is a pro2a, and former president of Cincinnati Right to Life. We had some good candidates of which she was probably the all around best.

The only downside was that she did support a 1 penny temporary sales tax increase that was also supported by the majority of the republican controlled house. That didn't sit well with club for growth, but that is pretty much the only hint of her being a RINO. Everything else about her screams traditional republican conservative. She will be a solid party vote in congress.

According to what Ohio posters have stated she is strongly pro-Life pro-2Amendment. Record on taxes not so good.

From their description she doesn't appear to be a Liberal. Whether she is a moderate or a reliable conservative except on one or two issues I'm not certain. In primary battles people are often labeled pretty harshly so it takes time for the truth to shake out.

Ex. Cain was supported for Zell's seat in georgia, Isikoff? won the seat, folks weren't happy. Since he won election they've been reasonably impressed.

Exactly, who is Schmidt, and the next two vote getters?

Not being from Ohio, I've only heard of the election in the context of a referendum on DeWhine...but if the kid finished fourth it sounds like despite whatever outside media hype the election had to do more with local issues and grass-roots activism
