Burned texts left at Islamic Center

Blacksburg police have not determined if the Qurans were burned as a hate crime.

By Joe Eaton 381-1665 The Roanoke Times

BLACKSBURG - Members of the Islamic Center of Blacksburg were stunned when they arrived at the building for prayers Saturday afternoon.

Outside the building, a plastic shopping bag filled with burned copies of the Quran sat in front of the door. Blacksburg police say they do not have any leads on who left the burned religious books, but they are investigating the incident as a possible hate crime.

On Tuesday afternoon, as a group of men gathered at the center, 20-year-old Idris Adjerid said he was disgusted about what happened to the sacred books.

Burn a flag it's free speach. Burn a Koran and it is a hate crime.

On another note, if you burn a book filled with hate, can that actually be a hate crime? Discuss amongst yourselves. I'm verklempt.

Wonder what precise law covers this book burning, and how could it be proved it was a "hate" crime.

I once threw a worn-out inexpensive bible into the garbage. Is that a "hate" crime?

Investigating this as a possible hate crime? A bunch of burned books left on the doorstep? In Blacksburg?

Actually, I am pretty ticked off at the hypocrisy.

HATE CRIME? What on earth has the ACLU and the courts been doing for the last 20 years?

Calling it a hate crime is an insult, and to use the ACLU flag burning precedent, it is a violation of my rights of free speech to label it as such.

I think that we all need to start publicly burning the damn book.

"Al-Qatami said the best way police can help stop hate crimes against Muslims is to treat all religions equally. "I think if someone burned pages from the Bible there would be a certain reaction. This should be the same across the board." "

Yeah, if someone burned a bible and left it on the doorstep of First Babtist, the left would be praising the freedom of speach and suggesting the Christinas inside think about what they did to provoke such an act.

Well the fact that the perpetrators actually understood the significance of a book would rule out any VPI students as likely suspects.

I wonder if it was an inside job by someone that wanted to be able to cry victim. After all if the terrorists are coached to make false claims of abuse and we know what kind of hate literature the mosques routinely distribute. They are probably not above burning a few Korans to score points.

The koran is not a "holy" book...it is a manual for murder, torture, enslavement and repression of women. Allah is a pig if he had anything to do with writing this piece of trash.

John Harrison, a law professor at the University of Virginia, said defining an act as a hate crime is not as easy as people outside law enforcement might imagine.

For example, if a person is assaulted, it is a crime. If that crime is motivated by race, religion or ethnic origin it becomes a hate crime, which carries a greater penalty.

I had an idea to get a cheap koran from the Border's outlet, put slices of ham between the pages, leave it out in the sun a couple of days and place it at our local islamic center.

It's a waste of food however so I'm gonna ask the grocery store if the have any outdated meat.

I wouldn't desecrate someone's holy book, because I was brought up better than that. Having said that, I can't help wondering if this is just another case of them "crying wolf" to push their agenda as an aggrieved group.

If it is unclear whether or not the act is a crime - as could be the case in dropping off burned copies of the Quran in front of a building - Harrison said police have to show that the act was done to intimidate or harass an individual or group because of their race, religion or national origin.

Seems to me burning the queeran is a form of protest, and a good one at that!

The Koran burned with "gay" flag & copies of Roe v. Wade

Operation Save America With God’s help and an eight page letter from a Christian legal organization, Liberty Counsel, the City of Columbus blinked and Operation Save America was granted a burn permit. Tonight those things detestable to God Almighty were set aflame. Children and youth tore copies of Roe v. Wade and added them to the fire. A "gay" flag was burned. Then Pastor Flip held up a Koran and said, "This book causes young men and women to become suicide bombers, blow people up and call it good, or crash airplanes into buildings…and the lying imams of this land say it’s not a violent book." He said, "We have three choices: To be killed by the Muslims, to kill them, or to convert them." He indicated our preference is for the latter. He had husbands and fathers come forward to burn the Koran. Several Muslims, who had aligned themselves with the rabble rousers who are present each evening, held pro-Islam signs. One snapped picture after picture of Flip, then spoke into a cell phone for the rest of the evening. A fight broke out among two men on the opposing side (pro-aborts, sodomites, Muslims, heathen, antinomians, etc. fight themselves). They were arrested as the rally ended.

You sir, are 100% correct! If I buy it, then it's mine. I have the right to burn it, wipe my islam with it, or anything else I feel justified in doing to it. This is an insult to the the first amendment's freedom of speech! What day here in America do we want to have a crokan burning day, as a freedom of expression day?

Blacksburg police have not determined if the Qurans were burned as a hate crime.

Since when is burning books of any kind a punishable crime? It's a moral crime if you are trying to suppress knowledge (as in Hitler's book burning), but is not a criminal act.

The most serious infraction I see here is littering.
