A month-long investigation into alleged animal cruelty has ended with the arrests of two people, employed by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals in Norfolk.

Andrew Cook and Adria Hinkle

Officers said Andrew Benjamin Cook, 24, of Tree Top Drive in Va. Beach, and Adria Joy Hinkle, 27, of Claremont Ave. in Norfolk picked up live animals from shelters in Northampton and Bertie counties but dumped dead animals in Ahoskie.

In all, 31 animals were found Wednesday - 18 dogs were in a dumpster at New Market Shopping Center in Ahoskie, NC. The rest were still in the van, police added.

Investigators said dead animals have been illegally dumped every Wednesday night for four weeks.

Surveillance done Wednesday resulted in the pair's arrest. Their white panel van, which was seized, was registered to PETA, investigators added.

And, according to the Roanoke-Chowan News Herald, investigators positively identified nearly all of the dogs found in the dumpster as the ones picked up just a few hours earlier on Wednesday by Cook and Hinkle. The paper also quoted investigators as say that shelter officials were told the animals would be taken to Norfolk where they would find good homes.

What's your reaction to this story?

Cook and Hinkle each face 31 felony counts of animal cruelty and eight misdemeanor counts of illegal disposal of dead animals. Both are free on $35,500.00 bond and are due in court on Friday.

PETA founder Ingrid Newkirk told 13News that Hinkle has been suspended. She said Cook was a new employee on a ride along and that he has not been suspended.

Newkirk also said that it would be "deplorable" for anyone to illegally dispose of animals.

She confirmed that PETA does, in fact, euthanize animals but only ones that are not adoptable.

Newkirk said some of the animals were in bad shape. For example, one had its collar embedded in its neck; another had a severe skin disease.

Dr. Pat Proctor of Ahoskie Animal Hospital said one of the animals he examined didn't need to be euthanized.

"This was a young, healthy puppy. It was a six month old lab mix and appeared to be in very, very good shape. Um, and he had received some type of injection in his front right leg," he said.

PETA said it's launched its own investigation.

I noticed the resemblence, too.

And Janeane Garofalo is not ugly. At least on the outside.

Except for the tatoos.

"What kind of life would those animals have had? Death was better, adoption was soooo uncertain..."

This also sounds like the pro-choice argument - just substitute babies for animals in your post above.

Would not be surprising if the top brass of this outfit could be practicing animal sacrifice and other satanic-style rituals. Gotta wonder what happens late at night when the doors are locked at their den of iniquity.

These creatures are heathen earth walking evil incarnate.

Who wholesale kills dogs and throws them in dumpsters?

Yep, the same crowd who wholesale kills babies and throws them in dumpsters.

It's in a penumbra of the commerce clause, ya know.

Evil. God help us.

Holy Cow! There's a whole lotta killing going on where PETA's concerned.

Yeah, kind of sad, really. Sadder still are the breeders who contribute to the situation.

"They should have let these animals go, like any decent person would have done."

I thought we were supposed to pay to have them trained so as to provide them with the skills necessary to re-enter the wild in a natural and productive way.

This is so sick.

Isn't PETA the same group who likes to occasionally send out video "evidence" of animal abuse at slaughterhouses--the abuse happening only when the PETA plants are present and running their videorecorders?

Yes, that's PETA. I expect they'll try to spin this story.

"It's in the video."

None-the-less... you do not include "Um" in a written quote. Sorry to be such a nitpicker, I've been noticing awful writing errors in AP reports for the last few days though (and that's in addition to the bias).

I personally volunteer to fly to Virginia at my own expense to inject both of these vermin and throw them into a dumpster.

PETA would be euthanizing human beings and throwing the corpses in dumpsters if they thought they could get away with it.

"This should be on billboards across the country."

Listen, I have said this on many other threads... I hate PETA for a million reasons, for their support of terrorism, for their attack on medical research, etc. but they do not hide the fact that they, like almost everyone else in this country, support the euthanasia of animals. Most Americans would not find it hypocritical at all that the euthanasia of unwanted and suffering animals is the "humane" option so I WISH that people started focusing on PETA's true crimes instead of this red herring. Here is a quote from a PETA spokesperson in the article linked on Drudge....

"A PETA spokesperson told WAVY News 10 that the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals has a long-standing relationship with shelters to euthanize pets that the shelters feel are no longer adoptable, and the spokesperson is confident the animal cruelty charges will be dropped."

See... it is a long-standing relationship they have with local shelters.... how can this be something in PETA's close when they are so public about it?

Look, all I did was Google "PETA, euthanasia" and the first result was not Petakillsanimals.com but peta.com.... you guys are barking up the wrong tree here. Think of their real crimes.

snippet:

Euthanasia: The Compassionate Option

Approximately 6 to 8 million animals are handled by animal shelters in the United States each year. Even though some are reclaimed or adopted, nearly 4 million unwanted dogs and cats are left with nowhere to go.(1) Shelters cannot humanely house and support all these animals until their natural deaths—they would be forced to live for years, lonely and stressed, in cramped cages or kennels, and other animals would have to be turned away because there would not be room for them.

Turning unwanted animals loose to roam the streets is not a humane option. If they don’t starve, freeze, get hit by a car, or die of disease, they may be tormented and possibly killed by cruel juveniles or picked up by dealers who obtain animals to sell to laboratories.
(it continues)

..................

I am just afraid if we don't attack PETA on the merits (fighting medical research, hurting agricultural industries, etc.) we might lose the ears of people....

Some new info. Notice the quote regarding PETA's "death kit". The crazy Brit that runs PETA says that one of the killers is like " Mother Teresa".

Two employees of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals were arrested on animal cruelty charges in Ahoskie, N.C., after investigators saw dead dogs being thrown into a grocery store garbage container Wednesday, according to the Ahoskie Police Department.

Ahoskie police conducting surveillance as part of a monthlong investigation reported finding 18 dead dogs in the container and 13 animal carcasses in a van registered to PETA and seized by authorities.

The cats and dogs were taken Wednesday from animal shelters in Northampton and Bertie counties, police said. Animals had been collected every Wednesday for four weeks, and carcasses had been found dumped in Ahoskie every Wednesday for about a month, Ahoskie Police Chief Troy Fitzhugh said.

Two veterinarians said they were told that PETA would try to find homes for animals taken from their practices.

Adria J. Hinkle, 27, of the 1600 block of Claremont Ave. in Norfolk and Andrew B. Cook, 24, of the 500 block of Tree Top Drive in Virginia Beach were arrested on 31 felony counts of animal cruelty and eight misdemeanor counts of illegal disposal of dead animals.

Both posted $35,500 bail on Wednesday and have a first court date set for today in Winton.

PETA is investigating the incident. The organization has suspended Hinkle, who has worked for more than two years as one of its community animal project employees in North Carolina.

Cook, who was hired only weeks ago as her assistant, has not been suspended.

“We are appalled if this actually happened,” PETA President Ingrid Newkirk said. “We would absolutely never condone this behavior.”

Newkirk said of Hinkle: “She’s the Mother Teresa of animals. She’s a very kind, decent person.”

PETA says it routinely picks up animals at pounds to have them adopted or, if necessary, euthanized.

Shelter officials knew some of the animals, which are not always “cute, cuddly, housebroken or small,” would need to be put down, Newkirk said.

Among the dead animals, though, authorities found a female cat and her two “very adoptable” kittens taken from Ahoskie Animal Hospital, veterinarian Patrick Proctor said.

“These were just kittens we were trying to find homes for,” Proctor said. “PETA said they would do that, but these cats never made it out of the county.”

When Proctor evaluated one dead dog for police, he discovered a healthy, 6-month-old mutt with a needle mark on its front right leg, he said.

He also identified what he called a “death kit” that police found in the van. It was filled with syringes and two drugs that only licensed veterinarians can have, he said.

“PETA will never pick up another animal from my practice,” Proctor said.

PETA had taken 50 animals to be adopted from Proctor’s practice over the past two years, he said. PETA has also taken animals from veterinarian James Brown in Northampton County for about a year, Brown said.

“When they started taking them, they said they would try to find homes for them,” Brown said. “Nobody ever checked on them” after the animals were taken.

When PETA employees took animals from Brown’s practice in the past, they would tranquilize them and take them away in vans, said Karen Cole, the animal cruelty investigator for the Northampton Sheriff’s Office.

Some animals were very sick or injured and otherwise would have been euthanized in Brown’s clinic, she said.

“Some animals have to be euthanized,” she said. “But the way this crowd did it is sick.”
