Well, Merkel's forthright comments in the Bundestag are more than momentous. It could be the beginning of a whole realignment of the paymaster and powerhouse of Europe. As Germany goes, so goes Europe. We can not leave Europe as the stage prop for the French and hope to wage a war against terrorism or even conduct a coherent international policy.
This breaking away of Germany from France is what I was hoping for here:

The Germans are paying through the nose for France's agricultural subsidies. When the whole thing started in the mid-50's it was a polite way for Germany to pay reparations for WWII. Why Schroeder is backing Chirac against his own country's interests is a very good question. Blackmail?
