The goal seems to be to feel a sense of connection to a Higher Power which doesn't affect one's "lifestyle choices". Kind of like gazing lovingly at a baby picture while neglecting the crying baby right next to you.

Getting all weepy eyed about the "Life Principle" one day, then attend a rally for the right to kill babies the next.

Well, if our single goal in life is happiness, I suppose they may be on to something. But if the pharmaceutical industry would only come up with the Perfect Drug, that would be much more cost-effective. I suspect the Hollywood crowd is all over that alternative.
