Buyer Demands Apology From Sen. Durbin
An Indiana congressman is demanding an apology from a US senator.
The issue is what the senate's number two Democrat said on the Senate floor this week about how prisoners are treated at Guantanamo Bay. The White House is angry and Indiana Congressman Steve Buyer is among several Republicans who are demanding an apology.
Illinois senior Senator Richard Durbin quoted an FBI report on conditions at Guantanamo Bay.
"On one occasion the air conditioning had been turned down so far the temperature in the room was so cold the barefooted detainee was shaking with cold, he read. He went on to say: If I read this to you, and did not tell you that it was an FBI agent describing what Americans had done to prisoners in their control, you would most certainly believe this must have been done by Nazis, Soviets in their gulags or some mad regime, Pol Pot or others, that had no concern for human beings. Sadly, that's not the case. This is the action of Americans in the treatment of their prisoners."
The White House is reacting. "I think the senators remarks are reprehensible. It's a real disservice to our men and women in uniform who adhere to high standards and uphold our values and our laws, said Scott McClellan, White House spokesman.
Rep. Steve Buyer, as chairman of the House veterans affairs committee, is demanding an apology. "Senator Durbin's comparison is irresponsible and dangerous. The torment of having to listen to extremely loud music or room temperature fluctuations can in no way ever be compared to the horror of humans being herded to gas chambers and others being summarily executed, Buyer said. "While the senator might believe his rhetoric will further his party and politics, it does nothing but undermine our troops fighting for freedom in Iraq and Afghanistan."
Sen. Durbin is refusing to apologize and issued a statement saying President Bush should apologize for "authorizing torture techniques." He also returned to the Senate floor Thursday night to reread his original statement, saying he wanted the context of his remarks to be understood.
"To suggest I was attributing all the signs and horror and barbarism of Nazi Germany, Soviet Republic or Pol Pot to Americans is totally unfair, Durbin said. Under hostile questioning from two Republican senators, Durbin said his point was that the type of treatment reported from Guantanamo was more in keeping with repressive regimes, not a democracy like the United States.
Meanwhile, al-Jazeera has picked up the story worldwide. Congressman Buyer told News 8, "Senator Durbin needs to retract his cavalier and careless words. At this moment, his comments are being used all over the Arab world by al-Jazeera to motivate our enemies and undermine the success of our troops in Afghanistan and Iraq."
I think you're on to something.
Bingo...
The silence of the democrats on this subject is deafening.
They are not growing spines. Folks - this is a huge softball. Even Republicans, perhaps, may feel emboldened to speak out against a Senator's gaffe comparing our troops to nazi's. For gosh sakes.

Fact is, with the ANTI-AMERICAN, and ANTI-CONSERVATIVE, we hate ALL Republican media actually reporting this, it means that the flames of hell are coming from hordes of Republicans and the media's only allowing a very small amount through their we hate conservatives filter.

Ya....but you have windows to let in the ocean breezes. Try no A/C in Virginia during the summer and get back to me.
Maybe this is an occasion for that "don't ask - don't tell" rule to be applied. :o)
You poor thang, good point.
It could be worse. You could hail from Ohio.
"The last time the nation was this polarized was just before the Civil War,and i think were going to have another one."You may be right.A few years ago i would have thought that a (Civil War)could never happen again.Something needs to be done. Our country is being destroyed from the inside out.
If I may offer Lincoln's prophetic words on this....especially the last five sentences.... "Abraham Lincoln, 27 January 1838: " "At what point shall we expect the approach of danger? By what means shall we fortify against it? Shall we expect some transatlantic military giant, to step the Ocean, and crush us at a blow? Never! All the armies of Europe, Asia and Africa combined, with all the treasure of the earth (our own excepted) in their military chest; with a Buonaparte for a commander, could not by force, take a drink from the Ohio, or make a track on the Blue Ridge, in a trial of a thousand years. At what point, then, is the approach of danger to be expected? I answer, if it ever reach us it must spring up amongst us. It cannot come from abroad. If destruction be our lot, we must ourselves be its author and finisher. As a nation of freemen, we must live through all time, or die by suicide. "
I lived in the South for almost a decade, and the socioeconomic and cultural disconnect that exists between the regions is stunning.
When I go home to the Rust Belt, there's a desperation about the place. Even the upper middle class people I went to high school and college with seem to be just skating by. It's insidious. Nothing seems to be the same as it was even twenty years ago.
When I go back to Dallas or travel to the burbs of Atlanta or Raleigh or DC, those areas seem so prosperous. I see new cars and houses everywhere and money seems to have no value.
We need some strong, centrist leadership in the worst way imaginable, but I don't know how it's ever going to happen.
What we need is a modern day Eisenhower...and a US Congress to back him up.
I understand perfectly.
No A/C here in North Carolina
It gets a little warm!
Rep. Buyer is a real good guy. (He was my representative for 10 years or so, until some libs moved his district, trying to hurt him.) Thanks for the post.
