"It is utterly undesirable, but we cannot stop software makers from selling such videos," a public relations official at Sony Computer Entertainment said. The hand-held PlayStation uses the universal media disc, or UMD, format, enabling the console to play games or videos recorded on optical discs 2.3 inches in diameter.
Pornography producers will soon release sexually explicit discs for Sony's PlayStation Portable game console, most of whose users are minors. Two makers of adult movies plan to sell their products for the console as early as July, and several other pornographers are apparently ready to follow, Japanese newspaper the Asahi Shimbun reported Friday.

The UMD format, developed by the Sony group, can play moving images for about 120 minutes. Much like the DVD, UMD discs can be produced and distributed by any company.

It's the Portable Smut Playstation! Or was that Porn Screen Portable?
Pathetic. Portable porn machines. Some people really need to get laid.
Poor Sony! It's not like sales are gonna go up because of this...
I suspect there will be a noticeable bulge in their sales figures
Since the lion's share of these machines are used by minors, why doesn't the U.S. attorney general step in and say, NO FRIGGEN WAY.
Any sufficiently advanced technology is inevitably used for pornography.

I'm sure Michael Jackson will be "laying" in a large supply of Porny PSP's.
later pingout.
One way to advertise it: complain!
I doubt it. A lot of kids who were going to get one for birthdays or whatever are going to be out of luck now. This is a lose-lose situation for Sony.
(Denny Crane: "Sometimes you can only look for answers from God and failing that... and Fox News".)
Girl says: "Is that a PSP in your pocket or are you just happy to see me"?
I doubt this will affect sales at all. It's like DVD players, do you know any familys that don't have one because there is porn available in that format? It's a non-factor IMO.
Sony's full of it. They are literally the only manufacturer of UMDs, the PSP's media format. All those UMD movies? The studio sends Sony the movie, Sony sends them the UMDs.
That said, what the heck is the big deal? Sony is within their rights to allow whatever they want on their system: it's THEIRS. All people have to do is avoid buying the titles they don't want. You know, just like DVD players.
You must not be too familiar with the portable media player market. This is nothing new.
The PSP costs $250, and it lacks a Nintendo brand-name. That automatically disqualified it from little Johnny's birthday, especially since Nintendo's DS costs $100 less.
Meanwhile, those with their own income streams and the want of portable entertainment are buying the PSP in droves--and this was before Region 2 porn was released. (You know, Region 2... meaning the porn in question won't play on American PSPs, which are Region 1.)
The keyword there is "considers." It hasn't happened yet, despite what the story in #1 said. Sony is still the only UMD manufacturer.
Actually, upon further research, these UMDs are region free, and I retract the "Region 2" part of my last reply to you.
That's from January, so given their statements here, it seems likely that they're pushing ahead with opening up the format.
UMDs that contain games or other software are region free. Alas, all movies are, however, region coded. So these discs won't work in the U.S. of A.
On a side note; there are very few places that carry the UMD films or games... the primary ones are Sony themselves, Gamestop, Wal-Mart, and Virgin Megastore. I can't really picture any of those, save Virgin, actually carrying porn for the PSP.
EDIT: Upon further inspection, these discs might be region free as they aren't actually being produced by the Sony trade standard. So I guess it's all fair game in the high profile world of portable smut...
One explanation for the failure of the Betamax was the abundance of porn you could get on VHS. I guess this is Sony's revenge.

Even without using the UMD discs, I hear it's not difficult to upload any video from your computer to the PSP, including porn videos.
but do kids carry portable dvd players with them to school and other places where they can't be supervised.
What do they mean they can't stop it? Sony OWNS the UMD format, how in the hell did the Porn makers get ahold of the burner or the pressing technology to put the videos on UMD?
Games are region-free. Movies are not.
However, in this case, the porn discs are region-free at the option of the porn studio. Not like it'll make a difference--dooes little Johnny even know that Sony is a Japanese company? I doubt he knows how to import something--certainly he can't pay for the porn UMD, and I think the parents would get a little suspicious.
No one will carry this. It's Japanese porn.
I noticed the date, yeah. I'm just saying, it hasn't happened yet.
Personally, I'd prefer Sony open up the PSP's firmware to let homebrew software be run, but that's another topic altogether...
Uh, yep. There are portable DVD players out there nowadays.
We'll I'm sure you realize that nothing is official from that "planning" yet. PLUS on top of that Sony still owns the format and would have legal control as to establish who could or could not publish on that format.
I.E. - Pornographers.
but do kids carry portable dvd players with them to school and other places where they can't be supervised. Not to mention the fact that PDAs (including "Treo" type phones) will play Windows video files.

Yes, I've been playing FF3 on my Nester J PSP version for the past two days.
The fact is, it's a hack. It only works on version 1.50 firmware, and 1.51 and 1.52 are still off-limits, plus Sony is requiring new games to check for a certain firmware version and refuse to run if that version is not present.
That's a pretty far cry from official homebrew support. The PSP could be gigantic if Sony would ease up on the restrictions.
Exactly my point: Sony approved the manufacture of these porn titles.
I think people already have portable porn players: their minds
Memo to Sony, for the sake of argument, just pretend they are firearms or cigaretts, you will quickly find a way with lots of liberal backing, and the US government will subsidize you.
Thanks for the comments. Good points...
I wasn't aware of that.
Nah. Parents will still buy it for their little darlings, then ask Government to step in and police it.
Yeah it's obvious that they're lying it's atypical Sony. Besides I hear the PSP suffers from poor manufactuering defects anyways.
I have little interest in this or their next over marketed piece of junk the PS3.
But Sony will go to court to make sure they're copy-protected.
And a rise in demand, a swelling of profits, and stiffening competition.
And a rise in demand, a swelling of profits, and stiffening competition.
I've got a better idea: why don't parents start paying attention to what their kids are doing and buying? Why should the rights of adult PSP users be restricted because parents would rather be their kids' "buddies"?
Inevitably? Porn is usually the first use of advanced technology.
Yes, that is true.
There are times though when it's not quite as easy as it seems to be a good parent. These days there's always on jackass kid out there whose parents don't give a damn. That kid will supply your kid with anything he wants.
We ran into variations of this problem all the way down to the first grade. Some parents allow their kids to watch any television show they want to. Then those kids run off to school to tell everyone what they saw.
It's quite hard to shield your kids from material that's not suitable for their age group.
