Posted on 06/18/2005 10:16:26 PM PDT by T-Bird45
In the early 1940s, a politically ambitious butcher from West Virginia named Bob Byrd recruited 150 of his friends and associates to form a chapter of the Ku Klux Klan. After Byrd had collected the $10 joining fee and $3 charge for a robe and hood from every applicant, the "Grand Dragon" for the mid-Atlantic states came down to tiny Crab Orchard, W.Va., to officially organize the chapter.
As Byrd recalls now, the Klan official, Joel L. Baskin of Arlington, Va., was so impressed with the young Byrd's organizational skills that he urged him to go into politics. "The country needs young men like you in the leadership of the nation," Baskin said.

He said he did it to "fight Communism", a cause not possible until 1946 at the earliest.
Oh, he's penned a book! Pasadena.
Interesting how the Washington Post can write this entire article without any reference to the close ties in the South between the Ku Klux Klan and the Democratic Party. The Klan kept blacks and other undesirables away from the polls and the Democrats in office.
During Reconstruction, the Klan lynched scores of Republicans as well as blacks.
The are skilled at that.
Can you imagine the press doing the same for an ex Klu Klux Klan member if he had an "R" next to his name?
"Byrd said in the Dec. 11, 1945, letter -- which would not become public for 42 more years with the publication of a book on blacks in the military during World War II by author Graham Smith -- that he would never fight in the armed forces "with a Negro by my side." Byrd added that, "Rather I should die a thousand times, and see old Glory trampled in the dirt never to rise again, than to see this beloved land of ours become degraded by race mongrels"
and Obama raised money for him. GO OBAMA!
Those of us trapped in 56K dialup HELL really appreciate it!
The Ku Klux Klan and the Red Shirts were both started by The Democratic Party, that's why they didn't mention it.
Where have I heard that before?
Sounds like Byrd's book will be a real pant load and he will skate as usual. I really think the Trent Lott affair was hilarious compared to this guy. If Byrd was a Republican he would of had to resign in disgrace years ago. The NAALCP would have assigned a 24 hour Rent-a-mob to him until he did.
The fact that the NAACP has never targeted Byrd for removal...is a total mystery. The only senator who openly was racist...and admitted such...yet they won't even attempt to go and bring this dude down.
This state will never get rid of its pork KKKing. When he dies they'll wire him for sound and send him out on tour with Jimmy Hoffa.
Will he bring up the filibuster of the civil rights act? It is not like he changed after leaving the klan.
Where is that Confederate Battle Flag? All I see is the Stars & Stripes.
As opposed to the political party he belongs too which is strongly opposed to anti-communism....
The communists were our ALLIES in '42 and '43! How does he get away with this?
Because we were on Commie hunts in our country. Sheets is trying to absolve his sorry self of everything bad the KKK did. What's a few years here and there to him? He can claim senility and say he and his KKK were "onto" the Rosenberg's and all other Jews who were working against our country out of some twisted loyalty to the mother country Russia. Always remember that we spy on friends too and they do the same to us.
""The original Ku Klux Klan was organized by ex-Confederate elements to oppose the Reconstruction policies of the radical Republican Congress...and to maintain white supremacy. After the Civil War, when local government in the South was weak or nonexistent and there were fears of black outrages and even of an insurrection, informal vigilante organizations or armed patrols were formed in almost all communities... It was organized at Pulaski, Tenn., in May, 1866...dressed in flowing white sheets, their faces covered with white masks, and with skulls at their saddle horns, posed as spirits of the Confederate dead returned from the battlefields. Although the Klan was often able to achieve its aims by terror alone, whippings and lynchings were also used, not only against blacks but also against the so-called carpetbaggers and scalawags...A general organization of the local Klans was effected in Apr., 1867, at Nashville, Tenn. Gen. N. B. Forrest, the famous Confederate cavalry leader, was made Grand Wizard of the Empire and was assisted by ten Genii. Each state constituted a Realm under a Grand Dragon with eight Hydras as a staff; several counties formed a Dominion controlled by a Grand Titan and six Furies; a county was a Province ruled by a Grand Giant and four Night Hawks; the local Den was governed by a Grand Cyclops with two Night Hawks as aides. The individual members were called Ghouls...The Klan was particularly effective in systematically keeping black men away from the polls, so that the ex-Confederates gained political control in many states."
That answer your question about the Klan's confederate "hertiage"? I don't see any union vets from the war between the states showing up at their grand opening.
The WP is dumping on Sheets .. Whooo Hoooo! What brought this on ..??
He agreed to their interview because his damn book is being published tomorry.
When he dies they undoubtedly re-name West Virginia, Byrdland.
When it came time to choose the "Exalted Cyclops"
Byrd won unanimously.
so glad to see the WaPost "revealing" that:
"he joined with other southern Democrats to oppose the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Byrd filibustered the bill for more than 14 hours"
I am reminded of January 20, 1993 when Clinton was being inaugurated one of his minions was offended at the Air Force traditional flyover and cursed the military. His companion said, "Remember, those are now OUR planes now."
The Democrats have no values. They are opportunists who seek only power. They will pander to any groups, the blacks, women, homosexuals, whomever, just to gain and keep power. They have no problem with hypocrisy as long as it gains and keeps power. Byrd a Klansman? Who cares? He is THIER klansman. The NAACP? They don't care, he votes the way the left wants him too.
Byrd is and always has been an egotistic self-promoter. Rewriting history as he goes is a time accepted tool of the left. Byrd, LBJ, and Slick Willie have a lot in common. He brags about bringing a lot of pork to W.V. but notice he names it all after himself. The first four lane divided highway he takes credit for? Part of Eisenhower's (Republican) national highway system. We must understand the left and quit judging them by our standards of decency.
Well .. no book is going to save his sorry behind.
Time for a smoke break, kids.
The Hill (3/8, Savodnik) reports WV2 Rep. Shelley Moore Capito (R) "is mobilizing for a possible challenge next year to Sen. Robert Byrd...getting a head start on fundraising and making top-level personnel changes. At a luncheon last week in Charleston that included 40 to 50 state GOP and business leaders, Capito stressed that she is keeping her options open for 2006, a West Virginia Republican who attended the event said." The Republican "added that two guests at the event particularly caught his attention representatives from the West Virginia Automobile and Truck Dealers Association and the West Virginia Manufacturers Association." Ruth Lemmon, "executive vice president of the automobile and truck dealers association, who attended the event, said Capito indicated that she would run for reelection to the House in 2006. But in a sign that the association might back a Capito Senate bid, Lemmon said: 'We think that having her in Washington in whatever capacity she ever chooses would certainly benefit West Virginia.'"
If you have some spare change, send it to draft Shelly...
The host of C-SPAN just read much of the WP article and is taking calls now on the subject.
Kind of funny. The host, who is a WP staff writer in his other life, just cut off a caller on the Republican line who was blaming Republicans for getting this article on the front page of the WP.
According to his book, Byrd wrote to Samuel Green, an Atlanta doctor and "Imperial Wizard" of the Ku Klux Klan, in late 1941 or early 1942, expressing interest in joining. Some time later, he received the letter from Baskin, the "Grand Dragon" of mid-Atlantic states, saying he would come to Byrd's home in Crab Orchard whenever Byrd had rounded up 150 recruits for the Klan.
When Baskin finally arrived, the group gathered at the home of C.M. "Clyde" Goodwin, a former local law enforcement official. When it came time to choose the "Exalted Cyclops," the top officer in the local Klan unit, Byrd won unanimously.
Cyclops!!! LOL. A new nickname for the old racist.
How many crossburnings and lynchings did the democrat senator KKK Byrd and his 150 recruits conduct? Senator Byrd needs to come clean about the acts of terror he and his recruits committed as a klansman.
Gee .. he didn't mention that on Thursday when he was telling about his daddy giving him crayons
The other poster didn't say anything about who started the Klan or where it was started.
Interestingly enough, one of the largest and most active memberships in later years was in INDIANA, which, last time I checked, was NOT in the south.
The point was, and is, that left-wing anti-southern, anti-white, anti-Christian, (largely) YANKEE rabble-rousers continue to try and remove all traditional and historical symbols and vestiges of the Confederacy because they SUPPOSEDLY have a link to slavery, racism, blah blah blah.
As one of the posted photos of the KKK shows, the flag of the US was flown at KKK rallies too. If we're gonna get rid of the Confederate battle flag, we might as well get rid of Old Glory to, huh?
Either would be, and IS, LUDICROUS, since, of the 200+ years of slavery in this country, only 4 years were under the Confederacy.
Those that love to whine and complain about the South (mainly Yankee democrats), should focus their whining and complaining towards the real racists (mainly democrats like "Sheets" Byrd), and they should STFU about our honorable Southern symbols, history, and traditions.
And how daddy dearest "Saved the cake... But always ate it!"
It is a shame that we are not capitalizing on all this. He states lies in his book, and will 100% get away with it. There is no doubt that if a republican lied about KKK service in a book, he would be hung by the media. What a shame.
Well, I pray for Shelly Capito
Actually, anti-Communism, as a political movement began in the early 1920s, spurred on by Wilson's AG, Mitchell Palmer.
Of course it didn't take on real significance until the Cold War, but there were several "Red Scares" in between 1917 and 1946
The reason the Nazi government was initially not objected to by anybody is that everyone thought Hitler was going to be a useful bulwark to Stalin.
Also of note, in the Presidential Election of 1928, the election results in Alachua County, Florida are kind of telling.
Smith (Democrat)- 35%
Thomas (Socialist)- 32%
Foster (Communist)- 30%
Smith (Republican)- 3%
The Communist candidate also recieved (somehow) 5% of the vote in adjoining Gilchrist County
The fear of Communism existed in the 20s, and for very good reason.
