Advocacy groups: Lesbian's death was a hate crime

Memorial, prevention: A candlelight vigil honors her; others say carrying guns is the answer

By Stephen Hunt The Salt Lake Tribune

Gay and lesbian organizations are calling the recent stabbing death of a lesbian woman a hate crime.

The groups held a candlelight vigil Friday evening at Jordan Park for the slain woman, Norma Hernandez Espinoza, who was killed June 10 outside a West Valley City apartment. About 70 people attended.

"We must combat the voices of those who hate," said Gena Edvalson, the gender justice coordinator at Utah Progressive Network, in a news release, "and we must stand together as friends and neighbors to show that we, as a community of love and understanding, are a greater force than hate and violence."

The alleged killer, Trey Holloway Brown, has been charged with first-degree felony murder.

Espinoza - who was having a romantic relationship with Brown's wife - had joined in a heated argument Brown and his wife were having about their three children when Brown grabbed a kitchen knife and chased the victim into the parking lot.

Outside, Brown stabbed Espinoza three times, then jumped up and down on her chest and kicked her in the head, according to witnesses.

Court documents describing the charges make no mention of the victim's sexual orientation.

"We charged [Brown] with murder, which was the highest crime that he allegedly committed, and we found no evidence a hate crime under Utah law was involved," said Deputy Salt Lake County District Attorney Robert Stott.

Said Edvalson: "We must say no to violence against women and violence against lesbians."

David Nelson, founder and owner of Stonewall Shooting Sports of Utah, issued a news release calling for women to arm themselves.

SSSU is a group of sexual-minority firearms advocates and owners who recommend gay and lesbians carry guns for protection. The so-called "Pink Pistols" idea was coined by writer Jonathan Rauch in 2000.

"Women with firearms are up to 2.5 times less likely to be injured," Nelson said. "Every year, people in the United States use a firearm to defend themselves against criminals more than 2.5 million times - several times more often than criminals use firearms to commit crime.

"Clearly, the legal, responsible and safe use of firearms saves lives and probably would have saved the life of Norma Hernandez Espinoza."

Espinoza - who was having a romantic relationship with Brown's wife -

Hate crime? I don't think so.

Cold-blooded murder of anyone is unacceptable, but when you have an affair with somebody's wife, you run certain risks, no matter who you are.

Here we go with the "hate crime" garbage. It was a crime regardless of what a person calls it. The perp(s) needs to be caught and prosecuted regardless.

I think the ones who are really haters are gays and lesbians themselves. But, modern secular liberal society teaches otherwise and many Americans are gullible fools who buy into it. Straight whites are the reason everything is wrong with America...SARCASM

Said Edvalson: "We must say no to violence against women and violence against lesbians."

Does the corollary "Yes to violence against men and violence against heterosexuals." then apply?

And if this would have been a man, there would be no mention of a "hate" crime at all. And just what was the "other woman" doing joining an argument that did not involve her? Now, again, if the lesbo was a man, no uprising of the freak crowd.

This is not a hate-crime but a result of a love triangle gone bad...Lesbians, like heterosexuals, should be aware of the consequences of an adulterous affair.

Half the population would be in jail if "hate" was a crime. Like you say, the crime is killing someone.

This hate thing is all about publicity and nothing more. It revs people up...unfortunately...the wrong people.

The lesbos would just LOVE to brand this a "hate crime," even though it was a twisted case of a love triangle and a crime of passion. The gay lobby is sure to invest a LOT into this thing.

This poor guy is gonna be hanged.

There is no need for hate crime crap. 1st degree murder carries the maximum penalty a state can impose, so what is the point? Other than it gives prosecutors scare-tactic power.

so if he is convicted of first degree murder and sentence to death, is the hate crime law going to make him MORE executed?

This is absurd, this is just the homosexual women who are just out to kill a husband who was upset his wife was having an affair with "one of thiers".

IOW they want more rights than others.

I am certain the article missed much of the details, but the fact the homosexual women are upset seems to work in the husband's favor.

I admit I overlooked the "sexual-minority" term. Why do liberals have to give every little thought, every little disagreement, every little "I want", some stupid name to define it by?

Reminds me of some Blacks getting upset that Mexicans were usurping "their" minority status.

Prosthetic penii are only contemptible in the hypergynocentric view if said prosthetic penii actually look phallic. Now, if they look like a bowling pin with rabbit ears on top, and are purple with pink metal flakes, that is perfectly OK. It's all in the symbolism.
