D.C. Police Chief's Car Stolen
Washington Post (via Drudge) ^ | June 20, 2005 | Del Quentin Wilber

Wanted: Stolen car. Make and model: Ford Crown Victoria. Owner: D.C. Police Department. Reported stolen by: Police Chief Charles H. Ramsey.

So goes the saga of car theft in the District, where even the police chief's department-issued car can get swiped just a block from his home.

"There is not a whole lot to add to it," Ramsey said. "The car was taken and there was nothing of real value in it . . . Cars are getting stolen everyday."

Police officials said that Ramsey's black unmarked car was stolen sometime between Friday night and Sunday morning from a Southwest Washington street, where it had been left for the chief by a member of the motor pool.

Ramsey, who had spent a week at a counter-terrorism conference in Scotland, arrived home early Sunday. When he got up to go to church with his wife later that morning, he went looking for the black Crown Victoria but couldn't find it, he said.

Assuming the officer might have left it elsewhere, Ramsey and his wife went to church in her personal car. This morning, after another search so he could drive himself to work, Ramsey realized the Crown Victoria had been stolen -- becoming one of more than 2,750 cars swiped off District streets this year. This is so DC in so many ways:

Cars are getting stolen everyday Yes, and nobody cares about it unless it is Chief Donut's car.

left for the chief by a member of the motor pool DC Government officials insist on living like Turkish pashas. Their people fetch their cars for them.

When he got up to go to church with his wife later that morning, he went looking for the black Crown Victoria but couldn't find it, he said. The official car, of course, is used to take the family to church. Most of us peons use our private vehicles for that.

Assuming the officer might have left it elsewhere, Ramsey and his wife went to church in her personal car. They own a private vehicle (unusual in the DC monarchy), but of course it is the vehicle of last resort.

2,750 cars swiped off District streets this year There are only about 400,000 people in the District -- TOTAL. Do the math.

By this morning, top police officials had been handed fliers that described the theft and had a photograph of the black Crown Victoria. Cops in the District need a photo so they will know what a Black Ford Crown Vic looks like?

"It's embarrassing" Kind of sums up the DC Government.

That's rather misleading since so many people come in to DC from Maryland and Virginia.

Hey Dude, I'm one of those commuters, and don't think for an instant I'd ever leave the Blau 993 on a city street.

Yep! No big deal! We DC police don't chase the criminals, they need to live too. Sting operation to catch few bad apples? We are too stupid for that. It is easier to write the report, give the victim case number and case closed. We can go for donuts and get more fat. Let the insurance handle the case, they have too much money anyway. /sarc

You'd think his car would have Lo-Jack...

Police cars would typically have the signal receiving end gear. Since chiefs are, well chiefs, they get the corinthian leather and heated seats...(/semi sarc)

This is Papa Bear. Put out an APB for a male suspect, driving a... car of some sort, heading in the direction of, uh, you know, that place that sells chili. Suspect is hatless. Repeat, hatless.

Over 8 thousand cars stolen last year in DC, an area only ten miles wide, and they act like that is a trivial insignificant thing.

Of course, I suppose that next to the murder rate, it is.
