Warm Welcome in Texas for Minutemen
WOAI ^

Posted on 06/21/2005 8:21:26 AM PDT by Happy2BMe

(GOLIAD, TEXAS) -- There was no shortage of volunteers last night as the controversial Minuteman civilian border patrol organization gathered in this historic south Texas town to organize anti illegal immigrant activities in Texas.

Many volunteers said illegal immigration needs to be stopped, and since the federal government is unable or unwilling to do it, then its up to civilians to step in and get it done.

"Our children can't get out into our yards," rancher and Texas Minuteman leader Bill Parmley told the group. "We're afraid. Something has to be done."

The location of the meeting in Goliad was significant. The city was the home of many of the volunteers who died fighting the Mexican army at the Alamo in 1836. The unit which delivered a cannon the Alamo along with a flag that carried the defiant message 'come and take it.'

Many volunteers complained that their lives have been 'turned upside down' by the surge in illegal immigration. They told of having illegals kicking down doors, damaging their property, and stealing livestock.

And there was a lot of frustration with what the volunteers perceived to be the federal government's inaction on the problem.

"We have met with our senators, we have sent letters to President Bush, we have gone all the way to Washington, and still no response," Parmley told 1200 WOAI's Charity McCurdy. "All we're doing is what President bush asked us to do after 9-11, to be observant citizens and look for suspicious activity and call it in. That's all we're doing."

But several civil rights leaders at the rally said the Minutemen go a lot further than that. Che Lopez compared the volunteers at last night's rally to the Ku Klux Klan.

"Just basically racially profiling people. Pulling them out of their cars. Intimidating them."

Minutemen organizer Chris Simcox said he plans to have four chapters of the group patrolling the Texas-Mexico border in October. A Minuteman action in Arizona in April had mixed results.

"We are here at the invitation of Texans," Simcox said. "Over 7,000 requests from citizens of Texans who are fed up with President Bush, and are growing weary of the situation we have on our borders."

But not all Texans are excited about the presence of the Minutemen in Texas, and one of them is Senator John Cornyn, who this weekend introduced a measure calling for comprehensive changes in border security, and the hiring of 10,000 additional sworn officers of the U.S. Border Patrol.

"I don't think that it is in the best interests of the country to have untrained people, who not withstanding their best of intentions, might find themselves involved in violent and unexpected situations along our border," Cornyn said, adding that he understands the 'frustrations' of the Minutemen and their supporters.

"I recognize that citizens think it has fallen to them in the absence of the federal government living up to its responsibilities to provide that security along our border."

But last night in Golaid, volunteers weren't interested in Senate resolutions or debates on international migration. They are increasingly frustrated with that they see as a growing threat to their lives and the security of the United States, and they want action.

"I don't think that the federal government has the ability to take care of it," one volunteer said. "I think they need help, and I'm ready to help."

Texas Minutemen BUMP.

Shame on President Bush and the other Beltway boys who are letting our country be invaded. And Senator John Cornyn is more than a day late and a dollar short.

It's clear who the good guys and the bad guys are here.

Unfortunately, this is exactly what President Bush wants to happen in America. Because of his commitment for a one State with Canada and Mexico, he knows America must become destabilized socially, economically and politically. Once that happens the UN will step in and America as we have known it will cease to exist.

Where is President Bush anyway? Has he gone on vacation? Texans won't put up with this invasion much longer. Private property owners along the border should invite all the Minutemen they can get to stop this travesty. And we are all armed.

Please show one instance where the Minutemen did anything more than report suspected illegal border crossers to the BP.

I'm with Michelle Malkin. There isn't anything wrong with profiling in this situation.

It ain't blonde women sneaking across our borders.
This is just common sense, but common sense seems to be politically incorrect these days.

I'm afraid that W is awol on this issue. Tragedy.

He could be a real hero if he would just own up to the problem.

Do we detect the same "kinder and gentler" trait that led to the downfall of Bush 41 in 1992?

Maybe some agency of the Government could be ramped up to handle this invasion. Like, maybe the Border Patrol or perhaps ICE??

Naw, we can't go there as that would be tantamount to protecting American sovereignty!!

If we can't stop the illegal Mexican from sneaking across the border how can we stop a terrorists or people working for MS-13?

Yes, but some of us have other plans for our future.

The reason Bush is promoting millions of illegals here is for their votes. It has nothing to do with providing them jobs. Bush is buying their loyalty by giving them free health care and a dozen other social programs. So when the time comes, illegals will be allowed to vote and they will chose what Bush and the one world leaders want them to chose.

We citizens who love America are in the way. There is nothing one can do against the power of the US government, even when the spineless Republicans are in control.

"I'm afraid that W is awol on this issue."

That makes it sound like he's had nothing to say, which is far from the truth. Actually, President Bush has sided with the government of Mexico and illegal immigrants from Mexico on this issue. He's called the American citizens putting their lives on the line (literally, human trafficers murder Border Patrol agents without thinking twice) vigilantes. Under him, the USBP is pulling back to allow illegals an easier time getting into the country (agents being told by superiors to keep the numbers down). The Border Patrol has been forced to stop seeking out illegals in some areas by beurocrats responding to the requests of friends and family of illegal aliens living in the United States illegally.

In other words, we're about a half-step away from throwing a 'Welcome' mat down on the border and giving free tickets to Disneyland to everyone who jumps across illegally.

I don't generally like to be overly critical of President Bush, but this behavior disgusts and offends me. All the talk about fighting the WoT and protecting America is garbage while the borders and coasts remain unsecured. Osama bin Laden could walk into this country and we wouldn't even know it. If that isn't a disturbing situation, I don't know what is.

He's called the American citizens putting their lives on the line (literally, human trafficers murder Border Patrol agents without thinking twice) vigilantes.

To be fair, he made that comment before the Minuteman operation began, and a lot of us didn't know how they planned to operate. It certainly wasn't known that the ground rules included no physical contact.

I don't think he'd make the same comment today. It turns out that the Minuteman Project (with one stupid exception by a guy who was kicked out) is equivalent to the Neighborhood Watch, except it's on the border.

I would be perfectly willing to accept that if he publicly reversed his position on the Minuteman project. That he has not done so despite the obvious success of the project and complete lack of vigilante characteristics tells me he continues to hold the same low opinion of them.

Hi Happy, we were in Goliad a couple of weeks ago. Right before we were there they had had 81 illegals in three vehicles jump out and run away! They caught some of them but most got away.

Goliad is 25 miles south of us and our newspaper prints all the information about the minutemen, etc.
