In his new book, "Porn Generation," Ben Shapiro points out that our culture is suffering from an over-abundance of smut.
What's even more disconcerting is that the raunchy stuff is getting ready to invade kids' video games.
The handheld version of Sony's successful video game platform, the PlayStation Portable (PSP), now reportedly has porn product that's been designed for it, which underscores the critical importance of parental responsibility in today's world.
Eight pornographic videos will supposedly be released for the PSP by a Tokyo-based adult video company, with a second Tokyo company planning to produce another three titles.
Through its spokesperson, Sony indicated that the PSP has a locking function that allows parents to stop their kids from watching adult videos on their game players.
To date Sony has shipped almost 3 million of the PSPs to Japan and North America.
The Left Coast Report suspects that if the trend continues we'll soon be seeing tawdry i-tunes for tots.
I wonder what sort of peripherals will be marketed with that.
I hope no one tells James Hirsen how many porn DVD's are available. He'd really flip out.
We got ours! My dear wife ordered some games from EBay. 2 of them were rated XXX. Oh well.
Luckily for me, I came to realize (as Jesus told me), sex outside of marriage is as bad (or worse) than heroin.
And, of course, the only way to really break from heroin is by the Holy Spirit. Same for gaining power over human sexuality.
I fairly sure I don't want to mentally travel down that road very far.
"I wonder what sort of peripherals will be marketed with that."
A joy stick of course.
Cool!
Time to get a PSP! :-)
(just kidding)
In case oldsters on the Forum haven't noticed, an awful lot of video games are purchased and played by adults. (College age, and yes, older.)
While we may decry the coarsening trend in our society's approach to sexuality, or feel that sexual content in video games is somehow worse in terms of inflaming the passions or provoking overtly immoral behavior than in novels (a feeling which I suspect has not empirical basis, but, I digress), the notion that sleeze is creeping into "kids' video games" is a bit overblown.
Some games are aimed at young children, some are targeted for adults.
Why must everything we have be safe for children?
Sounds like an RPR Ping to me!
I am gueesing by your Freeper handle that you served aboard destroyers. Am I correct in this assumption?
Some people are offended and need the nanny state to take care of them and do their parenting for them.
"...which underscores the critical importance of parental responsibility in today's world..."
Oh heavens no, you mean I must take responsibility for raising my own children, monitoring what they are exposed to via the internet, t.v. and video games, and teaching them why morality, honesty and integrity are important...
OH MY GOD, HOW THE HELL DO I DO THAT WITHOUT THE GOVERNMENT HERE TO HELP ME!!!! AAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!
:o) hehe... apparently we are on the same page with this, huh?
Which format is that? HD-DVD? Blu-Ray? Neither are available yet.
Okay I'm tired of the B.S. comments that parents can monitor their chidlren 24/7/365.
If you've had children you know better. Some kid that comes over to your house can be quite respectful. You call his folks and arrange for your child to go over to his house. Unfortunately you don't know everything there is to know about their family. It's impossible to.
Once over at their house, your child is give software to place on his device.
Please explain how a parent defends against this.
Some of you folks don't have a clue how the real world of children works. Are we really supposed to just give in to placing hard porn on devices that will unquestionably be handled by kids?
Can't adults get their kicks some other way?
It's a real shame to see adults demand access to porn on these devices. It's doubly sad to realize some of them are supposed to be conservatives with high moral standards and a dedication to seeing kids be able to grow up without access to these types of materials.
Is it more imporant for adults to see porn on the devices, or for our next generation to get a helping hand from adults?
UMD, Universal Media Disk. It's about 3" across.
"Oh my! I thought it said Donkey KONG!"
In his new book, "Porn Generation," Ben Shapiro points out that our culture is suffering from an over-abundance of smut.
So, Ben, at what level of smut does it move from an acceptable "abundance" to an "over-abundance"?
What's even more disconcerting is that the raunchy stuff is getting ready to invade kids' video games.
Name one.
The handheld version of Sony's successful video game platform, the PlayStation Portable (PSP), now reportedly has porn product that's been designed for it, which underscores the critical importance of parental responsibility in today's world.
They designed a porn game which underscores the critical importance of parental responsibility in today's world? I guess that's a more innovative plot than being a pizza delivery man to sorority row ...
Eight pornographic videos will supposedly be released for the PSP by a Tokyo-based adult video company, with a second Tokyo company planning to produce another three titles.
Ben, Ben, Ben - using a memory card I can copy and play any existing video - pornographic or otherwise - on my PSP. Did you complain this hard when porn moved from videos to DVD? That's all this is, a format change.
And I still want the name of the porn game.
Through its spokesperson, Sony indicated that the PSP has a locking function that allows parents to stop their kids from watching adult videos on their game players.
... and problem solved. What's the big deal? Of course, I know of a more follproof locking function called a safe.
To date Sony has shipped almost 3 million of the PSPs to Japan and North America.
Go capitalism!
The Left Coast Report suspects that if the trend continues we'll soon be seeing tawdry i-tunes for tots.
The bobhoskins post knows that much tawdry music already exists on iTunes.
I know what UMD is.
It is decidedly NOT competing with the DVD, seeing as how only the PSP can play UMDs. Sales aren't exactly strong, either. The UMD as a movie format is a novelty that won't be around in a year.
The real competitor/successor to the DVD is Blu-Ray. Ironically, Sony is primarily responsible for the Blu-Ray DVD format.
You're right. Poor choice of words on my part. My main train of thought was that Sony wasn't marketing porn to kids.
Why, the same way we defend our kids against bear attacks, drugs, skinned knees, bad grades, and bullies 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
We can't always be around our kids, but we can teach them the difference between what we think is right and wrong (as opposed to what school tells them), tell them how to avoid danger, let them know the consequences for stupid actions, give them a way to contact us or other trusted people if a problem occurs, and love them.
And, through all that, kids will still screw up. It happens. They are kids. Something will tempt them. I'd rather it be something small at an early age than something large at an older age ...
Porn has age restrictions, just like alcohol and tobacco. Do we make all of them completely illegal, just for the children (okay, tobacco was a bad example)? Or do we trust that we can teach kids that there's an adult world and a kid's world, and there's no disappointment in waiting to move from one to the next?
Besides, there are some things we don't want kids doing that we can't make unavailable to them, unless we go back to the chastity belts.
I have to say, I'm always a little amazed at the excuses parents can come up with for that lack of responsibility. Parents may not be able to monitor there kids 24 hours a day, but they do have to be with their kid to PURCHASE said PSP UMD porn.
You'd be amazed how many parents come into a video game store completely ignorant of the indepth rating system that's on both sides of the box.
I have to say, I'm really amazed at the evasive 'missed the whole point' responses I get when people argue the indefensible.
I did not imply I would allow my kid to do what you have implied. II do use good judgement regarding what my kid purchases, or what I purchase for him. We're talking about a kid's machine and I cannot be there every second to defend against what others will have on their games.
If it's not available for that format, problem solved. Of course you don't see it as a problem. I understand.
Since you've chosen to argue the adult access point on this, why not put porn on bubble-gum wrappers, hamburger wrappers, candy wrappers... the list is long.
Hey, adults use these things too and parents do their duty when it comes to those items too.
If that's your arguement, it fails the test.
Thanks for putting words in my mouth! It makes thinking so much easier! :)
Sure, if you want to make porn gum wrappers, porn burgers, etc., for adults, go ahead. Also, label them as for being for adults, prohibit them from being sold to minors. But don't make them outright illegal.
Also, I'm under no obligation to buy them for kids. And any company that tries to sell them can face the pressures of lost sales. I don't foresee McDonald's selling the Ronald McDonald Hardcore Value Meal any time soon.
If that's your arguement, it fails the test.
If your argument is that society should be subjugated to only have access to materials suitable for children, it fails the test.
(Really, why stop at porn? Why not violence? Heck, Huck Finn has the "n" word, can;t have that! Some of these ideas on FreeRRepublic are dangerous, and kids can access the internet when their parents aren't around! The horror!)
Kids shouldn't have guns, or morphine, despite restrictions on those ... but adults can still legally obtain them. And I'd be all for stronger restrictions on porn in a way ... why couldn't people be id'd for porn as stringently as for cigarettes or alcohol, or to get into an R rated movie? Show an ID, 18, go on your way.
Make it outright illegal, though, no way.
Especially as that still won't prevent kids from getting it if they really want it (see: drugs, alcohol).
I'm all for that, but that's a tough sell to eight to ten year olds. Peer pressure being what it is, I'd like to see the kid that would say, "I don't want to see that."
It's a nice premise, but it'd probably only win out only few times out of 100, even for kids who were otherwise decent kids.
I recognize that porn is available on many other formats. As you say, that is a problem. Those are also the avenues adults should use if they want to see porn.
Look that's my opinion. Thanks for posting yours.

Are we really supposed to just give in to placing hard porn on devices that will unquestionably be handled by kids?
You don't "place" software on a Playstation. Playstation games run directly from a DVD disk. It's also difficult to copy these games (it can be done, but it's not easy - they don't copy to normal DVDs.)
Your argument is the same as saying no movie with a rating worse than PG-13 should be released to video or DVD because kids have access to VCRs/DVD players.
No it's not, because DVDs are generally located where adults can supervise to a certain extent. Look, we're not going to agree so I'm going to bow out. Thanks for the comments.
> why not put porn on bubble-gum wrappers, hamburger wrappers, candy wrappers... the list is long.
Great idea! if you can do it, you'll be rich!!
The PSP is just a platform, like a computer is a platform. Game makers write stuff for it, as these people have done. Not all games are for kids, and that is not Sony's fault.
LOL, get outta here...
It's not that this isn't a problem. It's more that the problem can be solved by parents NOT purchasing the product for children. That's it. It's not a product that is available for children. Period. Kids can't PURCHASE this product. Only adults. If an ADULT purchases PORN for a KID, then the ADULT is responsible, not the MANUFACTURER. If an adult buys a child a handgun and that kid shoots another kid, is it the manufacturer's fault?
I also find it very interesting that you refer to the PSP as a "kid's machine." Interesting thing is, the vast majority of these $250 dollar products (well, it's really more like $450 once you get the memory card that would let you actually keep porn from the 'net or steal it from a UMD) are being sold to people over the legal age.
I guess kid's toys are pretty expensive these days though...
As somebody else explained, this PSP situation is no different than the other game consoles (like our PlayStation 2) that use the DVD format and can therefore play porn DVDs.
More so than PSP disks? How do you figure that?
You know, I'm not going to stomp you on another thread.
Bye.
True. So no children should be able to use this device because adults must for porn. Is that about it?
It would be impossible for you to stomp me on another threadyou without have first stomped me on any thread, which you have yet to do.
Again: this PSP situation is no different than the other game consoles (like our PlayStation 2) that use the DVD format and can therefore play porn DVDs.
I can live with your worthless opinion, as I'm sure you can with what you must assess is mine. Later.
As I said, running on empty. Very impressive...
Restating truths.
What you can't do is show rather than merely claim that it's worthless.
Restating your version is permissible. Why not post it ten more times if you're feeling that inadequate.
I already showed you, but you would rather play the hipocrit than accept it. I don't really mind though.
Ooops.
