My local left-wing newspaper this mornning has a leader on the front page and the story at the top of 9A about Edgar Ray Killen, who allegedly murderered three "civil rights workers" in 1964.
The paper uses "Ex-Klansman" in headlines and, in the text, calls Killen a "former KKK leader." You knew this guy was going away long before the trial started, no matter what the facts were, so they could close the case.
But, the interesting point to me is the sensitivity of the ultra-left-wing media to the fact that Killen is no longer a member of the Klan. I think must of us believe that it is unlikely that he is no longer a member of the Klan. The media accepts Killen's claim that he has left the Klan but does not accept his claim that he didn't kill the three! Why?
Because, the left-wing media is protecting Senator Bobby Byrd. Byrd was a member of the Klan and claims to not be any longer.A media claim that "once a Klansman, always a Klansman" applied to Killen, would have to be appled to Byrd, as well. Therefore, the left-wing media to protect Byrd, is willing to accept Killen's claim that he no longer is a Klansman.
This guy gets sixty years and Byrd get a senate seat. Now, that is justice.
Ok they have one of the Ex-Klansmen sentenced....what about Byrd???
He walks on water or something? Since when is it ok to reward one with the Senate and one goes to jail? I always thought what is good for the goose is good for the gander.....
Don't pass go Byrd, go straight to Jail!!!!!
Has anyone ever done any research to see if their were any lynchings or race murders in WV during Byrds reign as the grand keagle?
It should be easy to find out and if any occurred there's no reason not to ask Byrd what his involvement was.
Yeah, but that's fair since Byrd has held that seat for 60 years.
Byrd gets a senate seat and the dnc, protection.
How about a 'vanity' tag on the post next time?
Even more, what's with those scare quotes around "civil rights workers"? Are you implying those young men were something else? Are you implying they got what they had coming to them? They were idealists firm enough in their convictions to do something about it, which makes them better and braver than most of us. They were also unarmed when they were shot down in cold blood.
Seems to be a lot of criminals in the senate. Kennedy took a woman for a swim in an Oldsmobile and he got off so what else is new?
He should have called the keagle as a character witness.
This old fart gets the book thrown at him, and the other Klucker is the prince of the Senate. Double standard for Kleegle Byrd?
And I forgot the most important one, CLINTONS
How after more than forty years they can be so certain of what happened as to condemn an old and ill man to such a fate?
Let me guess,...the West Virginia Gazzette is your hometown paper??
The Baltimore Sun, which is as liberal as the day is long, reports "ex-klansman", while the conservative Washington Times reports "former Klansman" through an AP post.
I don't know that they're covering Byrd's tracks, technically the guy either "is" or "is not" a member, while philosphically I don't agree with the idea that "once a klansman, always a klansman". People do make really horrible and stupid mistakes sometimes. If they adequately denounce and do penance for their affiliation and offer some explanation for this error I think it's fair to remove such labels for these transgressions.
I can't speak for Killen, but I don't believe Byrd has ever made adequate explanation or repentence for his affiliation with the klan, so I have no problem with anyone wanting to hold his feet to the fire on this issue to this very day.
