Many think al-Qaeda is an organization with its own army. Not the case. al-Qaeda was/is a training and logistics organization which offered its services to jihadist around the world sometimes for a fee to them raised from the local Muslim rebels through heroin traffic, diamond smuggling, etc.

If you were a Muslim army waging a revolt, al-Qaeda for a fee (sometimes al-Qaeda helped poorer jihadists by providing them the funds) would train your fighters and help you attract foreign jihadist cannon fodder for your cause.

The 9/11 cell is a unique feature of al-Qaeda - they had a few cells in the important countries designed to carry out spectacular acts of terror. This serves to make al-Qaeda seem very important and the organization to go to if you are a Muslim rebel looking for backers.

I am pretty sure al Zarqawi now calls his organization al-Qaeda, and bin Laden hasn't denied it.

Islamist terror by any other name is as unholy, and insidiously foul.

Ansar had some 700 armed members in that area, and Iran allowed them to receive supplies from the Iranian side of the border. Saddam Hussein also provided weapons and money. This was an odd arrangement, but Ansar al Islam served the needs both of Iran and Saddam...

Further confirmation.

I didn't know that Zarqawi had a leg amputated. If we can get a few "insurgents" on our side, it shouldn't be hard to get him
