Like i said, I DONT HAVE studies, IF you do a search on optimal speed MPG or something of that variation. 55MPH seems to be the consensus. I would like a NEW study to see if this is the case. Also I would like to see some sort of CAFE standard put on newer vehicles. It doesnt have to be very intrusive just 3-4 extra MPG... that wouldn't cause any harm. but would reduce our imports on oil a lot.

We have a fleet of about 50 cars. Trade them annually with an average of 80,000 miles each. Have for about 30 years. They are driven by our employees traveling all over the U.S. The average daily trip consists of 600 miles.
We have two locations where most maintenance is done except routine oil changes about 5,000 miles. Our fleet consists of several different types of vehicles. Each driver gets to choose from a list which a consulting firm works up based upon the performance of that years cars. We normally buy at the end of the model year to get the best prices.
Based upon our own computer printouts, we find that using cruise-control improves mileage and that we routinely get better performance at speeds in excess of 55 mph than at lower speeds.
In fact, mileage goes down when we get into congested areas. Our computers are now tied into a gps system so that we know where the vehicles are at all times. The worst mileage is obtained in metropolitan areas during rush hours.
How can a simple law requiring a "Reasonable and Prudent" speed be unconstitutional?
Were cars even in existence when the Montana Constitution was written?
And judges wonder why people are increasingly critical of them.
Why not carry it a step further and outlaw low mpg vehicles like my Jeep Wrangler.
Then perhaps control when and where people go.
Giving freedoms away one at a time is not what America is about.
Speed linits should be based on safety and nothing else. Windshield time for a business man is much more costly to the company and the country than a couple of miles per gallon.
Thats crazy. I have a 2003 Chevy Silverado with a 327. Could Chevy figure out a way to get 3-4MPG more out of it without sacrificing HP? I'm sure they could. Could Jeep get 3-4MPG more out of your Wrangler without sacrificing HP? I'm sure they could.
I agree that they could, but it should be my choice to pay the extra amount that it would cost at the time of purchase.
The government mandating safety / mileage features have priced new cars out of the reach of many people. What do they do? Buy older crappy cars that don't have these features anyway.
Go to the poor side of town and you will see that it is filled with mosquito foggers with forged inspection stickers.
My main point is that speed limits should be set based on safety concerns alone and leave the politics out.

I started my maxillofacial residency in 1978. It seem that sometimes after that the speed limit was lowered to 55 nationally. We saw a huge drop off in severe facial and head and neck injuries. Of course as a resident we lamented the reduction of big panfacial fracture cases but now I don't miss them at all. If the speed limit goes back I will be getting a lot more ER calls and much more lengthy and complicated cases. I am getting to old for that stuff and I kind of like my nights and weekends. Seat belts and air bags also help so hopefully the new technology will prevent to "good" old days from returning.
