A.N.S .W.E.R.'s response to Bush: Recognizing that the people of the United States have turned dramat ically against the war and occupation of Iraq, Bush went on national televi sion tonight to defend his imperial foreign policy. He repea tedly invoked September 11 as a pretext for the criminal and illegal war ag ainst Iraq. Bush took to the airwaves tonight because the antiwar m ovement is growing in strength. Our power poses a major poli tical obstacle to the continuation of the war and occupation. Now Bush has taken on the additional role of Recruiter-in-Chi ef, urging young people to sign up for military service and r eplenish the dwindling ranks of the newly enlisted. Tonight Bush's speech was before a military audience. It comes twenty-fi ve months after he used a military audience as a photo-opportunity. At that time, May 1, 2003, Bush landed aboard the USS aircraft carrier Abraham Lin coln to announce, under the boldly painted banner, "Mission Accomplish ed," that major combat operations had ended in Iraq. Now with the blood of 100,000 dead Iraqis and more than 1,700 U.S. soldiers on his h ands, and a population that no longer believes his recycled ratio nales, Bush is compelled to justify the ongoing military conflict and occupation in Iraq. With the old pretexts - that is, the old lies - so completely exposed, Bush tonight resorted to the consta nt referencing of September 11. The A.N.S.W.E.R. Coalition (Act Now to Stop War & E nd Racism), which has organized the largest mass antiwar demonstrat ions in Washington DC during the last four years, was formed on Se ptember 14, 2001. A.N.S.W.E.R. represented the convergence of those or ganizations and individuals around the country (numbering in the tens of thousands) who immediately took to the streets to expose Bush's manipulation of September 11 and oppose the slogan of "war on terrorism." This mobilization took place at a time when there was great pressure within the U.S. peace movement to be silent and not speak out against the coming imperial ist war drive. All those who stood together in those early days of September have since reached out to their friends, families, neighbors, classmates and co-workers to successfully educate others, to broaden and expand this mass antiwar movement. Now we are ready to take the next step. On September 24 in Washington DC there will be a mass mobilization at the White House. There will be coordinated actions at the same time in San Franci sco and Los Angeles. This demonstration, initiated by the A.N.S.W.E.R. Coal ition and now joined by thousands across the country, is coming together at the critical moment for our movement. Waiting for the politicians is a dead end. The people must act and deepen the popular antiwar sentiment un til it becomes the most potent force in the current political equation. The September 24 demonstration will have its place in his tory not only as an expression of the changing political climate in the U.S. but also as an expression of great unity. Marching together and sharing leadership on September 24 will be Arab-Americ an and Muslim communities, unions, military families, veterans, students an d youth, and antiwar, social justice and civil rights groups. The September 24 National Coalition has formed to work together in solidarity and suppor t for this important demonstration. Urge your friends to join in th is important united effort and show the world the power of our rapidly deve loping peoples' movement. Rejecting the right-wing's efforts at division, the people can become the most powerful political force - and that is Bush's greatest fear. Ask them to endorse the demonstration and join w ith millions of others in the U.S. who now oppose the war in Iraq and want it to be brought to an end. Help spread the word to others about transportation options from your city by filling out the Transportation Form on the A.N.S.W.E.R. We only had about a dozen of us FReepers show up to counterprotest an A.N.S.W.E.R. demonstration in February '03 in Houston.
A dozen of us and about 4,000 of them. And our presence really pissed them off. I'm serious...we threw a quite a damper on their little love fest.

Tonight at 8:00 p.m. ET, President Bush will speak to the nation about the war in Iraq in a televised address. Despite the car bombs and rising attacks, he's expected to offer no new policy-in fact, he's expected to say that we're making progress, that everything is going just fine.
Over the last week, we asked you to vote on whether we should work together in a major campaign to get Democrats and Republicans in Congress on board with a responsible exit plan. As of this morning, hundreds of thousands have voted and the results are clear: more than 83 percent said you were in. Together, we're ready to tell our leaders that it's time to come home.
One good first step is letters to the editor. Bush's speech tonight will be one of the major "tipping point" moments since the war began, and we can help make sure that no one buys his "stay the course" rhetoric.
Politicians will be watching the letter-to-the-editor pages closely, and newspapers are likely to print letters on what will be the major story of the week. If we're able to push back hard enough, we can build a drumbeat for a real exit plan.

You might have noticed that Republicans like Karl Rove, White House Communications Director Dan Bartlett and Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld have tried to distract the country from Bush's disastrous Iraq policy by attacking MoveOn by name on TV. Rove was trying to put Democrats and MoveOn on the defensive, painting us as weak on security. But it didn't work-we held strong, and with your help we can make sure that the attack backfires. Lying about MoveOn can't solve Bush's problem-that he has no plan for Iraq.
And there is broad public support for a real plan. Two-thirds of the public say they would support elected leaders who stand up to President Bush and insist on a real plan to get out of Iraq. That makes sense: without an
exit plan with a timeline, we'll be stuck in Iraq for years and years, exacerbating the problems there.
As General John Abizaid, Commander of the U.S. Southern Command said last week testifying in front of the Senate,
"too much of a footprint in the region creates more resistance." But, believe it or not, Bush and Rumsfeld reject the very suggestion of a timeline. Rumsfeld
said on Sunday we could be in Iraq another 10 years. But their voices are the only ones being heard right now. That is why we all need to get a well-reasoned argument for an exit strategy with a timeline out there.

It's time to start responsibly coming home from Iraq.
Iraq is no closer to stability than it was a year ago. Things keep getting worse every week. More than 1,700 Americans have been killed and more than 12,000 wounded.
The U.S. occupation is fueling a growing insurgency. Our presence is exacerbating the problem. There are tens of thousands of insurgents backed by hundreds of thousands of supporters.
We got into this war based on lies-the wrong way. It's time to get out the right way. The first step is to realize that the Bush policy is out of touch with reality.
We need a real exit plan with a real timeline providing real accountability for our leaders. We need to turn control of the training of Iraqi forces and the rebuilding of Iraq to the international community. And we must renounce permanent military bases in Iraq because that angers the Iraqi people.
