Experts Warn China Capable of Attacking Taiwan

WASHINGTON: American experts are warning that China is rapidly building up its military so that it will have the capability to attack Taiwan, a separately governed island that Beijing considers part of Chinese territory. Tensions across the Taiwan Strait are hotter than usual, as Beijing increasingly sees Taipei's democratically elected government as moving the island toward independence.

China says it does not want to attack Taiwan to keep the island from declaring independence, but at the same time, Beijing has refused to renounce the use of force. And, earlier this year, China's parliament passed legislation giving the country's military a legal basis for attacking Taiwan if the island moved toward declaring independence.

China has no reason to attack Taiwan. They will just condemn it and use Eminent Domain to buy it with the blessings of the US.

Welcome to FR.

China has been able to attack Taiwan for a long time. If they want to, they will probably wait until we are further engaged in the war on terror.

We will eventually end up at war with China, whether its 5, 10, 15 years from now. There are similarities between China now and Japan before WWII.

China is foolish to engage in an unnecessary military buildup which just fuels this speculation, and creates diplomatic and trade challenges that it must deal with. It would be a whole lot easier, for example, for China to buy Unocal if it weren't for its belligerence.

So, does one assume that China believes that destroying its growing economy by attacking Taiwan is an acceptable risk? Why would it run the risk of destroying the lucrative trade it currently enjoys with the U.S.?

Taiwan has a strategic meaning as to be a frontier against US in the Pacific. Taiwan is one of the blocking countries. Meanwhile, China believes Taiwan as part of its country maybe as part of the Chinese nationalism. They also have a strategic border concept, which China may be part of it. In the recent years, China has violently taken over the Mischief reef and threaten other territories. China does have a reason to attack.

China has been able to attack Taiwan for a long time.

They can always try, but the chances of success is what they may fear. What they fear the most is the involvement of United States, which could be one of the reasons why they have not been trying to do so until today.

The evidence of Chinese intentions and growing capability is ample. We ignore it, overlook it, cavalierly set it aside, or down play it at our peril IMHO.

The three groups would not enter the straits once war broke out. They wopuld sit to the east of Taiwan, using the island as a buffer and then launch strikes from there against Chinese ships, air force, and other military installations all along CHina's coasts.

To send them into those straits in a war time scenario would be to invite disaster.

...but our subs (ADCAP LAs, a SeaWolf or two, and a couple of Virginia's)...now THAT is another matter. A force of 8-12 of them could start from the north and run through there like a Tsunami tidal wave.
