Ah! The 80's...some of the best times to grow up in! I was 7 in '85.
I remember a sense of proud patriotism in America, with one of the nation's best Presidents ever, Ronald Reagan at the helm. God rest his soul. Those were good times!

Whoa, I have some of those songs on my hard drive! I remember when Sugar Walls hit the music stores because of all the media hubub that surrounded that song (no, it is not one of the hundreds of tracks on my computer).

I can't believe how hot it is at night right now for you. Is this typical summer weather or a heat wave?
We are very lucky. It will be latter 70's/lower 80's with lower humidity.
Some of my family won't make it this year. :(. There will only be 14 of us this year. I can't wait to see my niece and nephew. It's been since Thanksgiving. I miss them so. :) The kids have a great time together!

2 January 1985
Dear Diary,
Boy am I glad that we got through 1984 with all of our Rights intact. Gosh, ever since I read George Orwell's masterpiece "1984" I have been worrying about the possibility of fiction becoming truth. All that talk about New Speak and New Think sure had me worried for a lot of years. We are so fortunate in this country to have a Supreme Court which makes it impossible for the Senate, Congress, and the White House to get out of control as they did in Winston Smith's world.
I think that things turned out OK in the end last year. The 1984 campaign for president was certainly interesting. Senator Mondale promised that if he were elected then he would raise taxes because it was "good for the country." Heck, how could anyone consider that to be Orwellian? His running mate for vice president Geraldine Ferraro was a terrific candidate. How could anyone even imagine that she was picked for political reasons? She was from the great state of New York and had a quite distinguished career in Congress before her selection as a member of the ticket. How could anyone ever think that she was chosen solely because she was born with female plumbing? Sometimes people are so stupid.
Who knows though Diary, perhaps someday a great woman political leader from New York actually will get to be a vice president. Heck, years from now, we might even see a woman from New York actually be on top of the presidential ballot. I can't really see it happening though. That would have to be a really tough broad who is ruthless, shrewd, and have to possess an impeccable resume. Ha, that is not likely to happen because anyone so politically savvy, would have the media all over exposing her for every single blemish. No way is the press going to let someone walk into the oval office just because she is a woman. That'll be the day that George Orwell turns in his grave.
I was also glad that the Soviet Union decided to boycott the Olympics last year. Everyone knows that that had nothing to do with our boycott of the 1980 Moscow Olympics. Yeah right talk about "War is Peace" being a lie. Still, the Soviet union is a great super power, and someday they could actually beat our country in the cold war. That will suck. It is too bad that we can't get a great leader in Washington to stop those Commies. Every time I read the news I keep learning about how bad our president is. I don't know though, I think that he is kind of cool, and sometimes he says things that seem intended to be a joke, but really are quite profound upon reflection.
Things were really screwy when the government broke up the phone company. Gosh, my phone bill is going to go down now for sure. I am sick and tired of paying to that behemoth AT&T. What has that company ever done for me? Besides, my phone bill is too high at almost $27.00 a month.
Oh yeah, Michael Jackson won the Grammy for best album of the year. That guy is still so young that he is likely to be around for a long time. He has done so much ever since he was 10 years old. I wonder what he'll be doing 20 years from now. I am sure that he will always be famous because of his contributions to the music world, as well as the example that he sets for people all over the world because of his character, hard work, and his love of children.

I was a little older than you in 1985. I remember the TV movie The Day After. I also recall Reagan's Star Wars speech. Ah, the '80's: the music, the movies, the cars, the attitude! Dang, now I really wish that I had a time machine so that I could go back and thoroughly enjoy that decade...(time to buy an IROC-Z and grow a mullet)
