MSNBC Analyst Says Cooper Documents Reveal Karl Rove as Source in Plame Case

NEW YORK Now that Time Inc. has turned over documents to federal court, presumably revealing who its reporter, Matt Cooper, identified as his source in the Valerie Plame/CIA case, speculation runs rampant on the name of that source, and what might happen to him or her. Tonight, on the syndicated McLaughlin Group political talk show, Lawrence O'Donnell, senior MSNBC political analyst, claimed to know that name--and it is, according to him, top White House mastermind Karl Rove.

Here is the transcript of O'Donnell's remarks:

"What we're going to go to now in the next stage, when Matt Cooper's e-mails, within Time Magazine, are handed over to the grand jury, the ultimate revelation, probably within the week of who his source is.

"And I know I'm going to get pulled into the grand jury for saying this but the source of...for Matt Cooper was Karl Rove, and that will be revealed in this document dump that Time magazine's going to do with the grand jury."

Other panelists then joined in discussing whether, if true, this would suggest a perjury rap for Rove, if he told the grand jury he did not leak to Cooper.

Cooper and New York Times reporter Judith Miller, held in contempt for refusing to name sources, tried Friday to stay out of jail by arguing for home detention instead after Time Inc. surrendered its reporter's notes to a prosecutor.

Meanwhile, on Capitol Hill, Sen. Frank Lautenberg, D-N.J., said Friday that several unidentified Senate Republicans had placed a hold on a proposed resolution declaring support for Miller and Cooper.

``Cowards!'' Lautenberg said of the Republicans. ``Under the rules, they have a right to refuse to reveal who they are. Sound familiar?''

Lautenberg's resolution is co-sponsored by Sens. Richard Lugar (R-Ind.) and Christopher Dodd (D-Conn.) It says no purpose is served by imprisoning Miller and Cooper and that the First Amendment guarantees freedom of the press.

Seems to me if the MSM could have fingered Rove in this they would have gleefully done it a long long time ago.

I don't know. If it was told in confidentiality they might have had qualms about violating that, enough qualms to keep them quiet till now.

However, when push comes to shove, I don't think that any member of the MSM would be willing to go to jail for Karl Rove.

That's probably why Time folded --- if it was somebody else who leaked, I'm not sure that they would have.

And what are you saying should happen to Rove if he is guilty?

The special prosecutor said early on that Rove was/is NOT the target of this investigation.

Since he's not, your hypothetical is irrelevant.

But let's say by some miracle Rove had been the source to explain to Novak that the reason Wilson, notorious Bush-hater, would be selected to travel Niger way was because Wilson's wife worked at the CIA and recommended him. So what?

The public information points strongly away from her being undercover and Novak says he was not told she was, so what's the problem?

But the fact is it wasn't anyone in the WH because nobody there knew Wilson had even gone there so they could not be leaking information about it.

I await your reply.

This kind of premature speculation smacks of leftwing conspiracy theories. They know that they've got to put forth their concocted theory now, or never, since the information will soon be released, and Rove will be off the hook.

Any way you look at it tho, it's 4th of July weekend and the little girl in Idaho has been found.

This story is back burner.

The special prosecutor said early on that Rove was/is NOT the target of this investigation.

Yeha but that dosen't mean he would not be in the notes would it?

If it were Rove, he would've been outed a long time ago. Would've been too valuable ammo for the election

Wilson did name Rove right off the bat. He was lying, of course, but that was the first person he pointed to, and it was used in the election.

He may well be in the notes, but he's not going to be named as the SOURCE, which is what this investigation was about.

I wish I thought this would be the final nail in O'Donnell's credibility.

Why don't you get in a dither over their brazen lies rather than wring your hands over the baseless idea that Rove was doing something wrong (leave aside the fact that the sources to Novak were doing nothing wrong---but they weren't in the WH and Rove was not one of them).

I'm talking about the rat who is implicating KR.

Little hight stakes poker IMO to come out with that.

Also why would he come out with it on a bad newsweekend like the 4th/7?

Do you think the MSM would allow something that could take down Rove to remain hidden for this long? Through the election no less...

And what are you saying should happen to Rove if he is guilty?

Since the "crime" is about 1% of what Sandy Berger did, I would suggest 1% of Sandy's penalty, 1% x zero = zero.

I know you were talking about. As I keep explaining to you, Rove was the original target Wilson pointed to and the plan apparently is to put his name out there again as the documents are about to be turned over.

Why? Because Rove's name WILL be in there---but he didn't speak to reporters until AFTER Novak's column. That will be the hook the dems will take to obfuscate the timeline, and it will be what O'Donnell claims as his excuse for making the charge and if called on it, he'll claim it was an honest (gag) mistake.
