Water vapor column shoots 1 kilometer into air over Pacific Ocean: Report

A 1-kilometer (3,300-foot) -high column of water vapor shot up from the Pacific Ocean off a tiny Japanese island on Saturday, indicating a possible undersea volcanic eruption, a report said.

The water vapor, resembling the steam emitted by a boiling kettle, was seen from the island of Iwo Jima by Japanese troops stationed there, Kyodo News agency said.

The vapor was roughly 50 kilometers (30 miles) southeast of the island, and was believed to have been caused by an erupting volcano on the ocean floor, the report said.

Japan's Coast Guard planned to dispatch aircraft to the area to conduct a survey on Sunday.

The Meteorological Agency said there was no danger of tsunami, potentially killer waves caused by undersea seismic activity or landslides.

Iwo Jima is about 1,120 kilometers (700 miles) southeast of Tokyo.

Maybe it is a huge release of undersea methane. I was listening to Art Bell last night and he had Whitley Streiber on talking about global warming releasing undersea methane and basically Streiber said in many words, "we will fart ourselves to death" if we don't do something. Streiber then went on about the US not retifying Kyoto is because the "fundimentalist Christians" are in charge. My solution, get "the mother of all Zippo lighters," load them into a B-52 and when menthane is released, light the sucker. At the very least, it will provide us with cheap, junior high style entertainment as well as a slew of "craps and giggles." B-)

until my personal favorite came out in the early 1980's. It was the short cartoon entitled Godzilla vs. Bambi.

Actually it was released way back in 1969!!

I wouldn't have believed it unless I saw it.

But it is clear that G-d is tossing the finger at Japan.

Er...I thought that was Ghidra? :)

He was Ghidra in the original Japanese, but Monster Zero in the dubbed English version.

It was a memorably scary movie when I was a small boy of 7 or 8. Monster Zero he will always be for me.

Interesting. back in the 70's I took a class on the
Atomic Age...one of the options before dropping the
a-bomb on Japan was to do a "demo" blast to show them what kind of power we could make.
It was not done, we thought they might put their U.S. soldier prisoners in the area of the agreed site for the demo. Or it wouldn't work and they would think we're bluffing, or they wouldn't surrender anyway, or they would explain it away by saying we rigged the demo, by planting conventional explosives in the "demo" area...
But if we had dropped a "demo" on an island, this "volcano phenonenom" might be another explanation that could
have diluted the impact an a-bomb would have.
According to John Hersey, in the book "Hiroshima" the official Japanese explanation of the blast was conventional explosive bombs, plus dropping "magnesium" powder or filaments to light up the sky when they hit the electrical grid... that explanation lasted about 2 days.

Didn't [Ultraman] take over where Speed Racer and Tobor the 8th Man left off ?

Speed Racer never fought monsters. But as a sidenote, SNL's TV Funhouse spoofed Speed Racer.

Speedy and Chim Chim enter the Mach in a NASCAR event. The NASCAR guys attack Speed Racer's "rice burner" and his manhood. Things get rowdy as the NASCAR guys have the upperhand. Suddenly, Speedy's crewchief summons all the japanese cartoons to join the battle. It gets ugly when the cute Pokemon demon lays waste all NASCAR combatants.

I was near tears with laughter. E! aires reruns of this year's SNL. If you can stomach the idiocy of SNL to get to TV Funhouse it's worth the effort.
