Since the situation is more complicated, is this attack on on Al Qaeda anything new? A new trend maybe? Or is it something that's already been going on?

Any New York Times reporter attempting to do so will be immediately terminated.

Plus they will give him a label that he is a far-right extremist and he would not be able to work for mainstream media afterwards.

It has been going on in the sense that while AMZ has negotiated his way into certain areas and bullied his way into others, there are certain areas where AQ doesn't operate. Some of the tribes are intensely xenophobic and barely acknowledged Saddam they are not about to acknowledge AMZ or us.

Now some of the tribes which have tolerated, or even aided, AMZ are obviously becoming actively hostile.

After Fallujah many of the tribal leaders came to see that AMZ and his ilk were thugs and also full of crap about standing and fighting against the Americans. They have seen the good that came about in Fallujah after the fight there. In Tal Afar, for example, the tribal leaders defied the terrorists to come to a meeting with coalition leaders to ask for a Fallujah style assault on their city to get rid of the terrorists.

In other words, the more anarchist elements are beginning to see the advantages a free spirited government style over an oppressive, exploitational one. Makes sense. =]

What would happen if we got tougher on border control there? Would those tribes suddenly change and go against us? And would that be the best way to go, regardless of how they react?

[TTYL. Try to check tomorrow.]

Happy Fourth of July!

"Foreigners" are not "insurgents."
Insurgents are natives of a country objecting to the current gov't. Foreigners sent into another country to fight that country's government are...
militants?
mercenaries?
TERRORISTS????!

I've thought, for quite a while, that the longer Iraqis live in a free society the more difficult (if not impossible) it becomes to move them to any sort of total control. I also think that in years ahead, as the neighbors visit Iraq, the more they will start demanding like freedoms.

The democracy Domino Theory. Works for me...

Al Qaeda versus the Iraqi Insurgents...who does the Left root for?

Same as when gangs light each other up here in LA -- they portray it in the most maudlin terms as an inevitable "tragedy" that somehow wouldn't have happened if Darryl Gates and Reagan were never born.

So this "Arab-on-Arab violence" will also be portrayed as a tragedy that would never have happened if not for Bush II. (Yeah, and Hitler and Stalin would never have gone to war if England hadn't interfered.)
