No more illegitimate children in France - ministry

PARIS (Reuters) - France abolished the legal terms "legitimate" and "illegitimate" for children Monday with a decree saying the distinction dating back to the Napoleonic Code of 1804 made no sense anymore.

Abolishing the terms brings France's civil code in line with laws passed in recent years banning discrimination -- especially for inheritance -- between children born in or outside of a marriage, a Justice Ministry communique said.

About 46 percent of French babies are now born out of wedlock, compared to about 10 percent in the 1970s, and almost 90 percent of them are claimed by both parents.

"The decree abandons the notions of 'legitimate' and 'natural' descent, which have lost all legal and practical significance since legislation has created full equality among children regardless of their descent," the communique said.

The decree will take effect in July 2006, it added.

The other rules for paternity will remain unchanged -- a married man is assumed to be the father of his wife's child while an unmarried man must recognize a baby as his.

This is too funny. - Pathetic.

Why not just abolish the word "reality?"

Aren't all the French "illegitimate" in that so few of them stood and fought the Huns in World War II?

Europe is quite deep in immorality, but we're catching up. If Bush cannot appoint the right judges to the supreme court, America will be more and more like Europe; it's just a matter of time.

I seriously doubt the right judge on the Supreme Court is the long term answer. Maybe repenting of our sin and turning back to God as a nation would help? In fact, if we did that we wouldn't be electing many of the immoral slobs to office that we do and we just might respect the Constitution and have more liberty and prosperity.

"No more illegitimate children in France "

Hah!!! Just let these froggies let Jesse Jackson or Kwesi Mfume live in France for six months and they'll change their tune quick enough!

I suspect the change in the law resulted from Chirac's efforts to placate his mistresses after having to slash their budgets when the Iraqi oil payments dried up. Chirac must have, what, 5 or 6 illegitimate children by 3 or 4 women who he supports and houses in apartments around Paris. They and the children all lived very well so long as Chirac was getting oil voucher money and payments from Saddam for Chirac'c firm support. When that money stopped, the girls began to bitch. Chirac had to do something to quiet them. The adult children have all gone to very good government schools and are well positioned, but they've always had "bastard" (whatever froggie is for bastard) hanging over them. Thus, this law.

I dunno. Maybe this isn't such a bad thing. Do we really have a need to stimatize children because of the parents?

This is most hypocritical. This has nothing to do with children, it has to do with women getting the money through their children.

Do you think the French care about the kids? They practice abortion too. This is about feminism.

The ruling relates about antidiscrimination against gays, by the way. It has nothing to do with children.

I've never understood how children could be illegitimate, when it was the relationship that produced them that wasn't legal.

The law in California is the same. There is no illegitimacy and a husband is assumed to be the father of his wife's children.

Wow. ...pot...kettle black and a rash of vulgarities in the thread.

Our leaders (pretty near all of 'em) in the USA won't allow use of the word, illegitimate, either. Judges and legislators (including Republicans) go ballistic over it.

Many Republicans are wanting to run a well known Kansas politician for the office of US president. I wrote to him in the '90s with regards to the problem of rampant "illegitimacy" here. He went nuts in his reply, implying that all divorcing/separating women are perfect and the men they divorce, all guilty and solely at fault.

I knew a Missouri Republican politician (State) who had been divorced seven times and married eight, according to local rumors. It was no problem for him, because he could afford to pay for all the wives and kids (IOW, not guilty). ...heck with 'em all.

I think it's something like Italien, Allemand or Britannique The only difference between them and the rest is that they don't pretend to like us while insulting us behind our backs.

a married man is assumed to be the father of his wife's child while an unmarried man must recognize a baby as his.

So if I get married in France and my wife gets pregnant by the milkman, even if I divorce her I will have honor of supporting the result?

Considering that this is also the law in many parts of America, bachelorhood keeps looking better and better.

Do you mean by claiming an estate, or financial support for the child?
