I hope you're right. I have friends who live in Munich, and they despise Schroeder and the way he has wrecked the German economy. I think a dose of good old supply-side tax cuts is just what the doctor ordered, and Angela Merkel will hopefully deliver.

...One can just look at examples of Dutch & Norwegian subs "sinking" American LA class boats in exercises & most of those boats have pretty much the same characteristics as the Kilo.

No argument, however, there is a difference between Dutch & Norwegian crews vs. an Iranian crew. Can you even imagine being on a sub crewed by the Iranians? LOL

;-)

To operate in the gulf and formuse straight you don't need much endurance probably. That sort of quiet boat armed with long range anti-shipping missile that has supersonic terminal stage is extremely dangerous. These guys don't even need or care about sinking US subs or ships. Few of these boats + good intel on commercial ship traffic and you have no oil flowing out of the Persian gulf. Question is how good boats are maintained, how competent are the crews (those Scandinavian and British diesels "sinking" US nuclear boats have elite crews, some Russian conscripts on Kilo would have little chance doing that)

There is a reason why US Navy is building Virginia class boats. Supposedly they will be the answer to the newest diesel subs. For now, this is a scary development.

I was watching the History Channel over the weekend.

Japan had jets. Knock offs of the ME 262, and one model that was faster. The jets were made for Carrier take off. If we had to do an invasion of the mainland their plan was to use the one jets off over modified transport ships and the others off the mainland. They traveled over 500mph and could operate at 37k feet. Our Navy would have never known what hit them and our bombers would have no defense against them.

1946 would have been a bad year if we did not drop the bomb.

"What the heck is wrong with those Russians

Are they nuts?"

They are not nuts. They are evil. They have been huge supporters of the Iranian nuclear program and ballsitic missle program.

The Russians created modern terrorism and are still behind, it, but now they have to be much more covert, because they are playing "good guy". So they have helped Iran set up as an unattackable nuclear power, so they can serve as the base of worldwide terrorism and not suffer regime change.

This the the first paragraph in the article.

"Source: kommersant.com

Yesterday the Second International Naval Show (IMDS-2005) finished its work in St. Petersburg. During its course there were negotiations about new shipments of naval military equipment to China and Mexico, and about the refurbishing Iranian submarines."

NAVAL MILITARY equipment to CHINA, MEXICO and IRAN.

Now WTF does mexico need with russian naval equipment? Are they going to fight the war on drugs? (/S)

Can you say "Red Dawn"?

You'll likely see your wish come true by years end.

The outcome of the Iranian Presidential "Election" and this kind of continuing strategic military help from Russia, China and North Korea, has accelerated a "point of no return" for Israel and the US.

I agree with that. The crack about Commies was more a joke than anything else, but you are right about name calling. Although to a certain extant this is only a continuation of their policy under communism, which argues in favor of it being nationalism.

They are probably a better shallow water boat than our nuke subs. Any former sub people out there would know better than I do.

They are a problem, but I'm sure that if need be, the US could find a solution to them

He may have big dreams. But the rapidly declining population makes such dreams moot. A nation, in peacetime, can't continue to have 170 deaths for every 100 births -- especially on top of a net immigration outflow.

Russia? An attractive investment option? Not with Putin helping his cronies steal companies left and right. All Russia has going for it is the flat tax. But what good is low taxes if your company can be seized by whatever faction is in power?

And Russian weapons? US military equipment has been turning Russian military equipment into scrap metal for decades on battlefields around the world. Once our missile defense system is up and running, Russia's final military asset, it's ICBM's, will be just as worthless.

They don't seem to be concerned at all about rogue states gaining nuclear technology, that's always puzzled me. They have had their own radical islamic problems for years. Go figure.

A shia Iran hates the sunni muslim world. India has maintained decent relations with Iran for their oil and ofcourse due to Pakistan. (Some secret agreement is rumoured that India has landing rights in Iran incase of war with Pak)

Other than that it will be stupid of Iran to challenge Indian in the Indian Ocean. In the Indian Ocean, after USN, IN stands tall. The rest hardly have any presence.

Just musing.....

Iran is the death enemy of Israel. Do those subs and missles threaten Israel? Yes, they do. Israel is within range of the missles, maybe after a little sail time.

Iran is moving closer and closer to nuclear weapons. When, lo and behold, this is learned, what happens then?

Iran is basically handcuffed. Israel has nukes and will retaliate if attacked, with full atomic support from us.
We'd love it if Iran provided enough provocation for us to take out their nuke sites. Israel wouldn't tolerate any provocation from Iran. We've sent J-Dams to Israel, and they have their own nukes. Besides, Israel did that before, to Iraq.

We also know that Iran is backing Muslim terrorists we fight in Iraq, and has backed past major terrorist attacks against us.

There's probably more, but Iran might be a little further out on thin ice than it thinks. (Iran/think...Does that sound oxymoronic?)

Iran could be a stalemate in the region for a long time. I don't think Iran will act, because of swift retaliation from several sides. The only way Iran could be aggressive militarily would involve allying with another major power that could deter others (us) from stepping in.

It does seem to me, however, that Iran's backing of terrorism might cause its sub fleet to suffer from mysterious (and violent)dissappearances. :D
