Having been to London 5 times myself, I really cannot think of a more fun city to go see the Olympic Games at. Congrats!!!!

The added bonus is that it really must make Chirac's skin crawl that Paris lost to London.

Any plans for India to run for Olympic candidate in the future?

Defeating both the French and Hillary is worth the extra taxes to me.

Well, we can blame Mayor BloomingIdiot of NYC for the losing of the Olympics because of his no-smoking policy!

And no one can tell me different!

LOL! This dissent, coming from the hoity toity man who used to work the ice cream counter at HoJos. There's nothing wrong with honest work, but if he wants to be le food snob, then he should apologize to HoJos.

Roast beef with Yorkshire pudding for Jacques. Served with some English ale.

Nah, give him some bangers and mash. Save the Prime Rib for us!

Isn't every Olypics a drain/strain on the host city? It's like a commitee announcing which city will be burdened 7 years hence.

Sydney did pretty damn good out of it (and it still is).

Why are people excited about this story?

Weren't the 2012 Olympics supposed to be Hillary's big coup?

Congratulations England!

Only the USA or England could host the games and possibly turn a profit. All the other cities would plunge the host nations into mountains of debt.

Finally I am somewhat happy that NYC didn't get to host the games. IF NYC was chosen Hillary Clinton would have been given all the credit. She would have appeared every day for the next month on the Today Show reminding all the soccer mom's of her great triumph.

It is intended that the public spending required by the Games will revitalise some of the run down parts of London and its public transport system. There can be some economic benefits to the Games; however, this will be tricky to manage properly.

Regards, Ivan

The French newspapers apparently said the only thing that could destroy Paris' bid was Jacques Chirac.

Given Chirac's comments over the past few days, I'm kind of not surprised at this outcome. But still, Paris' bid was in many ways the best, notably because 1) Paris already has most of its facilities in place and 2) Paris has superb transportation infrastructure to bring the huge number of people expected at the Olympics (two major airports plus excellent high-speed rail connections to the rest of Europe).

Congratulations to London, anyway, and best wishes holding the Olympics in 2012!

I would invite all my American friends to come in 2012. Let's make it a party that celebrates the triumph of the Anglo-Saxon world.

Now, now.....let's be inclusive....let's not gloat.....

Oh, hell, who am I kidding? LET'S!!

Hey, Frogmeisters -- eat this cheese!

LOL!!

Warmest congrats to all the cousins, Ivan, I hope you all have a wonderful time. Pssst!! You can still make the French pay for it!

In a world marvelling at the persistence of victory-challenged Gallic culture, it's nice to know that raffish Third World dictators can always count on being dragged out and having the hell beaten out of them by someone who speaks the Queen's English, don't you think?

It makes all the other cheesy little ragamuffin dictators so much more......pleasant.....to be around, so much so that one almost stops noticing them after a while.

I propose all the above as the topic du jour at a transpudlian bitter-tasting party at your favorite London pub in 2012. Let's invite the Canadians, too, how about?

Congratulations, along with sympathy for the disruption and tax burden which all the preparations will cause. Nonetheless, I'm personally pleased that my favorite city to visit in the world was chosen. Oh, and it is delicious to think about how this hard slap to the face must feel to Jacques. "Oh please, anyone but les Anglais!"

I believe we did not win it based on our present-day abilities to host the Games, but rather our plans were detailed, and also, the French were far too arrogant and complacent about their bid. Chirac was emblematic of this attitude.

Let me be not the first to say "Congratulations, job well done."

I honestly thought the current political climate would win it for Paris because of Blair's support for U.S., Iraq & a broader WOT and Chirac's opposing all of same.
